EikeHein writes "Made by dozens of fans over a period of several years and featuring impressive special effects, the feature-length Warhammer 40.000 epic DAMNATUS ranks among the most elaborate fan productions ever made — and yet may never see the light of day. Despite initially giving a go-ahead to the project, UK-based Warhammer franchise owner Games Workshop has come around to forbid distribution of the film just as it was being readied for release. What's more, they've amended their IP Policy to forbid any such projects in the future. At the heart of the matter appears to be Continental European copyright law, which grants the German film makers certain irrevocable rights to their creation which they cannot sign away. Given that the owners of the other two SF mega-franchises, Star Trek and Star Wars, have been able to come to terms with such issues and arguably benefit greatly from the media attention paid to popular fan productions, it would seem that Games Workshop still has to learn a thing or two about how to capture fan enthusiasm for their benefit."

Since outrage about Games Workshop's ban of all fan films in general and of DAMNATUS in specific has emerged throughout the whole community, we now decided to put up an online petition, where you can sign and make clear that you do not support Games Workshop's wrong policy and condemn it:
We all know that such petitions should not be overestimated, but before we try other protest forms we would like to see how many are standing behind us, how many voices speak for letting us release this fan film without having to fear to be sued.

Five days have passed since the true 'Enemy Within' has shown itself. More than 3,500 have already signed the online petition. It's great to see your support. Although some comments are over the top, the anger is righteous and justified. Even if we shouldn't be able to change their decision, the managers of the company-we-don't-speak-of have to learn the hard way what it means to betray your own followers.

Here is a summary on our wiki, feel free to fill in new information and have a look at the discussions going on as well as the media coverage:
WHAT CAN I DO? Please keep on protesting. Send them an e-mail or better a real letter in which you politely and clearly state, what you think about banning DAMNATUS and fan films in general. Adresses can be found on the official website.
But since we are creative fans, we would like to encourage you to try out other fun and mad ways of protesting and spreading the word as well. Here are some possibilities we found on some of the dicussion boards:
Mark the Unclean Take a miniature you don't need, use your bitz box to 'kill it', paint dark red blood on it and send it back to Nottingham!
The Emperor's Laughter Bring light into darkness by using the almighty power of humour, parody and satire. Be it in a comic strip, posters, animations or other forms of art which are (still) allowed in the 'Infamous Policy'. See here two examples: I II
Warp the Game The Damnatus Crew allows all supporters to field a unit of nine standard cultists if you play against an 'Enemy Within'. These cultists represent furious fans and they give no victory points. Should he refuse to play that way and you are forced to take them out - moral victory is yours! Also remember to yell 'Blame GW!' whenever you fail a moral check.
Inquisition Interrogation Go and talk with the 'Enemy Within' and ban it on audio or video tape for us all to witness. Be brave and ask the unclean why, why, why! Make your interrogations public or send it to us. Perhaps together we can create a shocking documentary?
Deep Strike Make a fan film! Yes, break the ban. Create a short and serious fan film (parodies are allowed by law) and upload it to youTube. Show us real camaraderie. Yes, it's hard to create costumes and try to act, but think of the symbolic impact towards the company-we-don't-speak-of! So get a camera, some cowls and guns and make your cellar into a place of never-ending war. No one can stop you, they do not see you coming!
WHAT WILL YOU DO? Honestly, we don't know at the moment. Legal counsel is on its way. Things have reached a pretty pass. We don't know how bad it can become so please don't urge us to leak the film. Perhaps we will have to accept the ban and abandon the film as a Wh40k fan film or a film at all and think about other possibilities. More about that later.

this has peaked my interest somewhat. I am a keen enthuesiest of the art of making fan-movies, though not really much of a fan movie watcher myself.
It seems odd that GW would take this stance.
Ok, not odd for GW, they are always pulling stuff like this, but how could this possibly interfere with any of their cash-flow? They cry IP as the reason, but the cries have strangely only arisen once talk of distribution has started, where the money starts to come into it.
As is mentioned, Star Wars has virtually a whole other industry revolving around making fan films. Surely anything that promotes the brand is a good thing?

Theyve been working on it like 4 years, and now GW says theyr not allowed. Damnit!? Its like the romans building a temple to ceaser for 40years, just to be said "uh, dudes. Sorry, but your not allowed to build that"
"But ceaser, you said it was okay when we showed the plans!"
"Yes, yes. I know, but I don't think you should build a temple for me."
