The Chronicles Of Clan Vexzkar! Pre-Nemesis Crown Campaign

Part 1 - Initiation

Part 2 - Rumours

Part 3 - Scheming

The dark foreboding presence of the Ulricsberg was ahead. Scarfester and Grey Seer Chittersnitch stood in the tunnels and looked at the path they were soon to travel. A sense of foreboding seemed to infuse the very air they breathed. This was supposed to be the site of one of the master-races most recent and great victories. Here the Doom Hemisphere had been detonated!
However things had not gone entirely to plan and there had been many 'complications'.

After a swift deliberation it was decided unanimously by the Grey Seer and slavemaster, that they should wait a while and send in some spies. Chittersnitch decided to use his infiltration adept, bodyguard Skurskritt. If any rat could find out what was going on here and survive, then it was the small and wily skaven. He spoke extremely rarely, if not reporting his most recent findings to his master. Many of his fellow Clan members found him creepy and Chittersnitch suspected that his other bodyguards distrusted the slight, quiet skaven assassin. Of course Skurskritt could kill any of them and not harm his master. However, the same truth was applicable in the other direction as well, of course.

Chittersnitch summoned Skurskritt to his side and Scarfester watched as the orders were given to search the area up ahead. He watched the nimble, black clad assassin disappear into the darkness. Skurskritt has drawn his soot blackened blade and seemed to melt into the shadows as his cloak drew tightly around his form. Scarfester was almost impressed!
Making his excuses, the slavemaster left the Grey Seer and headed towards the area the slaves were kept in. As soon as he had turned the nearest corner, he ducked into a side tunnel and found his own infiltration adept waiting. Grazlik had been waiting in the side tunnel, with he ears pricked and listening in on the conversation between the slavemaster, the Seer and Skurskritt. Using techniques learned from the masters of Eshin, he had learnt how to distinguish single voices from the noise of a crowd. Chang Squik had taught him the secrets and he had used them to great advantage on many occasions.
Scarfester noticed the body of a clanrat on the floor. Blood seeped from a gaping wound in the creature’s neck, as giant rats feasted on its still warm flesh. Looking to Grazlik for an explanation and Scarfester was treated to a quick shrug of the shoulders. Obviously the clanrat had walked into the wrong tunnel at the right time. That sort of curiosity usually led to a swift demise. Soon the body would be eaten and no one would be any the wiser. It was hardly worth worrying about!

After a brief explanation of his needs, Scarfester sent his infiltrator into the dark of the Ulricsberg. First he was to check the deeps of the undertunnels and report on the Doom Hemisphere's state and then return via the overtunnels and report of any presence there.
Skurskritt was also checking the undertunnels and Grazlik has been given strict instructions not to alert the Seers spy to his machinations. If he was found out, then he was to kill Skurskritt by any means necessary. Scarfester was certain that if the Grey Seer found out that he was looking for any means of killing his master, then the Seer would attempt to find a nasty end for him. That was clearly unacceptable.

After Grazlik had insinuated himself into the darkness of the tunnels leading to the Ulricsberg, Scarfester went and checked on the slaves. Conjuring up a quick excuse, he executed several to restore a healthy balance of fresh terror enduced, obedience. The fresh blood on his armor and war pick was a nice alibi for his whereabouts, if the need arose to explain where he had been, to his Seer master.
Scarfester spat at the thought of Chittersnitch and the bumbling fools warpstone snuff habit. He was a potent mage, but his addiction caused him to lose site of reality at times and could well lead to his downfall in the not too distant future. An evil grin bisected the slavemasters scarred face as he entered the Seer's personal chambers.
The three bodyguards that remained with the Grey Seer immediately jumped to their feet as he entered. All of them eyed him suspiciously. Krittjaw especially! Scarfester noticed the way the blade masters paw remained resting on his sword handle as he crouched down next to his master.
The slavemaster finished cleaning the fresh blood off of his armor and war pick with a small pelt of fur he had cut from the last slave victim. Whilst the victim was alive of course! Nothing says obey me, like a slave being flayed alive in front of his fellows, just to produce an implement for cleaning the weapon that is destined to smash the victim’s skull.
Once satisfied, Scarfester tossed the ragged piece of flesh so that it landed almost directly between the Seer and Krittjaw. The bodyguard bared his fangs in a snarl of warning, but Scarfester ignored him completely and addressed Chittersnitch.

'Disobedient slaves master.'

The matter of fact statement acted as a simple answer, to the unanswered question. Chittersnitch seemed satisfied enough.

'Has your spy returned master?'

Chittersnitch seemed a little perturbed by his slavemasters interest in the knowledge to be gained from the Seers spies. It was clear that the Seer trusted the scarred warlord less and less recently. All the more reason to employ my own, more efficient spy network, he thought ironically before stating the reasons for his interest.

'Clanrats are restless master. Wish to move on and feast on man-things flesh.'

The Seer seemed to be thrown off guard and slightly disorientated by the fast, simple answers sprayed at him. He must stop using the snuff before meeting with his warlords. Definitely before he meet with any enemies!

'Skurskritt has not-yet returned! I shall await his return and then call-send for you.'

Chittersnitch seemed to be pleased by replying in the manner he had been addressed. He gave a smug grin as Scarfester strode out of his personal chambers with his tail between his legs. But he winced when he found himself gazing at his snuff pouch, as he stopped watching his warlord leave, now dealt with.

'Idiot-fool.'

Thought Scarfester as he strode away into the undertunnels. His so called master had just made him free to do whatever he wished. He knew such direct and challenging squeekings always made the Seer nervous when he had been 'using'.
Now he had free time to go and meet with the other half of his spy network. Grazlik's twin brood-brother Gritzak. They were almost identical in appearance. Their manner of spying and killing were very different though. Where as Grazlik used his blackened hand claws to climb and kill with, Gritzak used a grappling hook, with a blackened steel chain to scale walls and strangle. Of course both of them had a multitude of other weapons about their persons, but theses were their main killing tools.
Despite Scarfester's fearsome battle prowess, his main weapons were knowledge, cunning and fear.
All but those at the very top of Clan Vexzkar feared him and he had enough information and all the tools at his disposal to keep those around him at each others throats.

Earlier he had insulted Krittjaw by tossing the piece of ragged and bloodied flesh near him. He would use this in the future to further provoke the so called blade master and have one of the other bodyguards eliminated. There were so many other possibilities as well, that he could tailor his plans to his needs at the time. Flexibility was the key to survival in all situations!
He always believed that the best plans were the ones where only you knew fully about them, until they had been fulfilled. And even then for quite some time after it was better to still be the only one in the know, until you were out of harms way.

Soon his plans would unfold and he would be feared by all once more. Even that fool-scum Chittersnitch!

But not too soon...............

Another excellent read. Your characterisation is still my favourite aspect of your writing, making all their various sneaky machinations more involving and plausible. It didn't have much action but didn't need it as it made up for it with twists and turns... more like well-thought-out small actions with dire consequences, if you know what I mean. It read like a chess match witrh skaven in it and was very well done in this. Guess it wasn't called scheming for nothing. :P

There are a few spelling mistakes but nothing major.

Looking forward to more stuff from you. :)

And... what IS a Doom hemisphere? I keep hearing about them and I can't get 5000 posts to see for myself any time soon :D

Cool.
That the way I wanted it to read (the sneaky chess match type thing)!
Its a precursor to plots unfolding and there will be a lot of action then. :P
But no explosions just for the sake of it. Its not an American action film.

Think the 7th seal with extra added back stabbing. :P

There will be more soon, due to the joys of having to work late at the lab, on my own. <_<

I will go through and edit out the spelling mistakes.

@Scarfester: Great! Kasparov vs Fisher in the underempire version ;)
Looking forward to the next episode.

@Demagorgon. The D.H. is the giant apocalyse-machine that this forum invented and "fluffed"so brilliantly, that it got mentioned in the official Storm of Chaos aftermath.
Beware to ask the older members..............they might never stop chittering.
In the SoC archive there is even a topic called "The Doom Hemisphere" (IIRC)
