Seeking hobby guidance...; ...from underneath a mountain of models

Ok. Let me start by saying I really hate those "Tell me what to do" threads I see on WarSeer all the time, where people ask others what armies they should buy, etc. So now witness me being a hypocrite and asking my fellow inhabitants of the Under-Empire what I should do with my giant mass of hobby products--or nerd porn, as my girlfriend so lovingly calls it.

Here's the deal. As I've stated in the past, I rarely get to play the game of Warhammer or Warhammer 40K. I love the ability to be involved in the hobby without having an emphasis on gaming.

But I screwed the pooch when I started buying armies that I "liked the thought of."

Now I have a boat-load of Tomb Kings, a good portion of Dwarfs, a sizeable Eldar army, a Witch Hunter army (40K), as well as countless random blisters and boxes. Oh yeah, and my Skaven, of course.

So I can easily say I have 4 armies that I don't spend any time on whatsoever. I still occasionally think about how it would be cool to have a Tomb King army, with countless chariots racing across the battlefield, but that's about it. That thought doesn't turn into me working on that army. The only army that I still whole-heartedly enjoy the idea of and am willing to work on (occasionally) is my Skaven.

So whine whine whine, cry cry cry, blah blah blah. I know there are others out there who jumped into this hobby and are now in over their heads. I'm wondering what you have done to remedy this situation.

I sincerely don't think that I have the time (or even care to) work on all of these armies that I have. But every time I tell myself they are off to Ebay, I think of why I like the idea of them, and there they stay: tucked neatly away in storage.

I'm going to be starting a "Tale of Four-Minus-Two Gamers" with my buddy when he returns from Iraq, and we're going to be building 1,000 point Chaos Warbands of different factions (him Tzeentch, me still undecided). So I'm going to have yet another army...

So again, the purpose of the thread. Commiserate with me. Guide me. Encourage me to post this heap of plastic and pewter on Ebay and be done with it. Tell me to keep it because it never hurts to have to much. Just say something... please. I need to know I'm not alone in this pathetic little plight.

It's just hard to give something up when you know your not going to get as much back as you put into it. Like, for instance, I purchased something from the hobby shop, and now if I sell it on Ebay, I will essentially be losing money. But yeah.

I suffer from that syndrome too <_< Not so much Warhammer but other stuff.

Are there any friends, you could sell the unused armies to?
So you could trap others in the hobby, thus gaining someone to play against/with.
And spend the money earned to boost your skavenhorde/eshinsquad. :ph43r:

It is hard to let go, but sometimes you have to in order not to drown in belongings.
And be able to concentrate on the things more important.

I'd sell it.

There are lots of people having the same issues though and I have to restrain myself every week not to fall into the same trap of 'starting new armies while I haven't finished the old ones'. I did that once with my empire army and it is now quite stagnant on the shelve while my skaven are getting all my attention. I have even at times regretted the decision and wished that I could have started another race instead. I'm going to stick to it though and my empire, my tau (which I also have to paint sometime) and my skaven are going to be my only armies and 3 is enough.

Also the thought of 'losing money' if you sell them on Ebay isn't exactly correct. You will have lost more money if you don't sell them and just keep them in storage all the time.

I'd pick 2 armies: a fantasy one and a 40k one and sell the rest. For the fantasy one I'd reccomend skaven off course ;) .

Then, focus on finishing your skaven and the 40k army and when your buddy comes back start on the chaos warband.

That's what I would do. It's hard, but with warhammer definatly, I think it's better to have a few armies that you can really focus on, than lots of armies that you can't get started on.

Cheers,
Bodacious.

Bunny ear says flop

*laughs*... Wow, that sounded familiar.

Originally, I began the hobby with just my WH Fantasy Skaven army and for a (long) while, all went well. Unfortunately though, I learned to know the Specialist Games and soon after, all was going downhill as I started buying more armies again and again. So, I'm now the proud owner of twenty-ish armies/ gangs/ warbands/ mobs/ teams (take your pick) in over something like ten different game systems... Where I live, only WH Fantasy and 40k is played, which kinda left me hanging high and dry with the rest of the armies/ etc. (not going to do that one again) that I hardly was to use.

So, if it makes you feel better, you're not alone... ;)

At this point, I am selling off everything I am never going to use, or never going to start/ finish. This means that my entire 40k I.G. army is going out of the door, a couple of Mordheim warbands, lots of Dwarves and the list can go on for a while... If you really wish to decrease your 'nerd-porn' (gotta remember that one, it has for some reason a nice ring to it :P), I suggest to start dividing your stuff up into what you are going to finish/ use and what you will never look at again.

Yet again, this sounds familiar!

When I used to play a lot more, years ago, I had a LOT of unpainted models for quite a few armies. My friend was the same and between the two of us, we could put together a decent sized army for every type.
We played a LOT of games together, but with unpainted models.

Whilst that was fun, I must say it really doesn't compare to playing with a fully painted army. ^_^

I'd say don't bother throwing away, or selling your models. If you really like the idea of the armies, then organise yourself into painting them.
You won't need to buy anything for quite a while, so all you need to do is paint. This can save you a LOT of money. Believe me!
I used to go up the pub all the time, but i've replaced that with painting in the evenings instead. I know have about (since this time last year) another 220 odd models painted and i've saved up enough money to almost totaly pay off my student loan. :D
Believe me its rewarding and helps in 'the real world' for keeping a lot of the money you earn. ;)

I'll be continuing this with my skaven horde and will be moving on to my wood elves after the UEGT, then onto my Tau. I'll keep saving money for a long time and in a few years i'll have at least 3-4 big armies and to top it all off, i'll be rich! Mwahaahahahaha.......etc ^_^

Thats my take on it anyway! :P

Pants are for the weak!
Well, i started the hobby when i was a little ickle 10 year old with too much pocket money, basically i would always blow my money on what ever army attracted me, firt off all it was dark elves, then skaven were released so i bought a hell of alot of then, then chaos was realesed, and i ahd always liked chaos so i wanted to buy them, then i got distracted by vampire counts and soo on, i was bassically buying whatever took my fancy (damn..the amount of money i would of saved....)

Now eventaully as i (very slightly) matured,a nd also realised that i could not afford to keep changing armies, and that i twas a waste of models, i picked two armies which i knew i would stick to, to be my only two armies Witch Hunters, and Skaven, now the rest of my models ahve lain in storage for a while, many finding their way into my armies someway or another (e.g. slave, or see the conversions in my WH retinue) but the majority have bbeen left to collect dust, utill recently i ahve been forced to sell everythnig i dont need before the end of the year when i am emigrating to New Zealand ( :D )

What i would reccomend, is if your selling them, only sell the models you know you wont use, try painting/playing with each army you have for a bit to make sure that it is the army you want and not another one youvce collected, and do not be too hasty the worst thing would be to sell say over £150 worth of Tomb Kngs because you thought you'd never use them, only to realise that they are actually the army you like, and the army you kept jsut doesnt float your boat.

Well i hope something ive said here ahs helped

lol just made me fall on the floor laughing.

At the moment I got units from 3 armies. Well actually 4. I got a blister of Chaos Fleshhounds, unpainted, 3 Plaguebearers and 2 Bloodletters. I actually painted those Bloodletters.

I got a load of Undead stuff. All unpainted, gathering dust.

I got some 5th edition Wood Elves, which I stopped collecting. Most are partially painted, just 2 Wardancers are 'fully' painted.

I recently bought a box of Silver Helms. I always liked to paint them up. Probably because they're blue and white in original paint scheme, and blue being my favourite colour. Either way, I think that's a suggestion for you (and others).

It's perfectly natural that you sometimes don't want to paint your army anymore. I have the same thing. So, you have to buy something else, which is entirely different. I basically collect Vampire Counts. But I've been bored by the 'boring' models they got. They're too easy to paint. That's my opinion. So I buy some Silver Helms, which are entirely different.

I think everyone should do that once in a while. Just paint up a unit from a different race, without wanting to collect that particular race. I find Silver Helms to be the coolest looking Cavalry unit, and I was in heaven I when I opened the box containing them.

Perhaps, if you get your painting standard on a high level, you could sell those units on Ebay for lots of money!

lol you're not alone.

I've got about 1500pts of Orcs, 2000+pts of Empire and about the same for Skaven. I've never played a single game with the Orcs, the army I've had the longest lol. You should see all the funny looks you get when you go to GW and buy most of a 1500pt army in one shot lol. I've played maybe 3-4 games with each of my Empire and Skaven armies. But for me its more about the hobby than the gaming and I just like collecting and displaying really cool looking armies. Most of my stuff however is not even painted. I'm getting back in the mood for working on my Skaven now so I'll be putting the Empire army aside. But somewhere down the road I'll get the urge to work on some swordsmen or whatever so I'll pull em back out.

I say keep em. Pack up your other armies and put em away for now. When you get the urge for something different they'll still be there waiting for you, and you won't need to spend more money. Unless its a space issue or you really need a couple extra bucks keep em. Sell em and you might just end up regreting it even if it is a couple years down the road.

Either sell it or use the extra armies as a way to help get friends/family into the game as you play a game or so with them using your armies.

Like everyone else said, you're not alone ... I've been Lizardmen, Vampire Counts, & Skaven as well as Dark Eldar, Blood Angels, Chaos, and (Chaos) Tau (yeah, I put spiky bits and such on them, they looked sexy, lol... for the common evil, heh heh.).

rather than starting another army why not use a narative campaign with your buddy and start a warband with one of your "other" armys, then as he buys his stuff paint up what the same "cost" of stuff from your storage boxes.
You still get to do the 4-2 gamers thing and starting off as small warbands you can build as you play as you buy. It'll get the stuff out from the storage boxes and save you buying more minatures that you wont paint!

good luck!
If we arnt meant to eat animals , why are they made from meat?

Try this its fun!

Number of skaven models: About 400.
Painted skavens: Probably around 150-200.

Number of O&G models: about 300.
Painted O&G: about 15

Number of OK models : about 150 (including gnoblars)
painted OK: 0

Number of other stuff: probably 50 or so.
Painted: 27. 27 badly, old high elves I've been trying to sell for years.

Well, you kinda have to decide if you want to do each of those armies or not. If not, or at least those with which you're not sure, you could give someone you know for a couple years. If you don't want to do that, then either paint them, sell them, or find an old dusty shelf.

...you can still call me Rusty Tincanne if you want, though.

As long as keeping them without using them is an option, why not think about offering some as prizes for the painting comps? or am I totally off my rocker there?

I am having that problem with Skaven, though. I will trawl through ebay from time to time and see a great deal and bid and sometimes win. And while they are great deals, I just don't need them. I don't have time for what I have now. I have about 60 PM's to paint, and ~20 PCB's. And I haven't even started my characters and rat spawns. yet I have most of those models, plus a good number of models for a Moulder themed army (giant rats, rat ogres and characters). And someday I'll get a few clanrats, maybe - if I like the new models when they come out.

What I really want to do is terrain, though. And it is everything I can do to withstand teh urge to start stockpiling materials for that! Luckily, I move so frequently (and reside in such small places) that I cannot collect too, too much.

Sell it, people will buy ANYTHING on eBay and with the price hikes there's not going to be a small market. You won't break even, but it's a sizable enough return. Then use the money to buy Hot Fuzz and laugh your arse off untill the early hours.

Win-Win.
