I'm in favour of making underempire's own swear-words.
Dunno if anybody here watches Spongebob Squarepants, but he uses words like 'barnacles!' or: 'tartar sauce!' which makes his point clear, AND is hilarious! So, who's in favor for creating the underempire's own swear-words?

*shrugs* counts as self-censorship. Same as replacing the word with something random, such as *Wark!* (I do this from time to time, but generally not on the UE).

"Now that's just *Wark!*ed up!"

Is fine. There's no 'bad word' there. Not even a hint of one. And it gets the point across.

I'm guessing that such phrases as "Grab him by the barnacles" would also be fine, as it contains nothing rude unless you're looking for it. And even then you have to read a reference into a mention of a mollusc. Similarly, I use "Fez" in real life, to replace a certain bad word. It might carry a subtle connotation of what you actually mean, but it's much better than using the 'proper' word.

What about the use of spoonerism in place of blatant swearing?

Tricky. I'd go with caution and avoid them. Most are just too blatant....

The thing wolt wrote wasn't OK, but you are allowed to use WTF, whilst everybody knows what that means to? Why's that?

Nonono, it's WFT... duh. :P

Not that I would recommend you actually use a WFT....

...or do I...? *looks sly*

Basically, we shouldn't be wondering what swearing is allowed, and what swearing isn't allowed. We should be wondering why do we swear in the first place? What we as people/ratmen should be learning from this is that swearing is unneccissary, and causes a lot more trouble than it's worth.

When you want to emphasise a word, we have a whole pile of acceptable ones.
Bad things! => Really bad things!

There are ways of putting emphasis on an emphasising word itself.
Really bad things! => Really bad things!

If you need to use a swearword, for whatever reason (perhaps an exclamation or normal words just can't get the strength of feeling across) then completely censor it. One letter is not enough. All but one letter should be the minimum. A group of symbols or complete replacement word is even better.
%^%& => What the snoz?

There's always a way to avoid swearing. I know I've never tried very hard in the past, but now is as good a time to start as any. :) [/color]

My problem is that I can never take anti-swear campaigns seriously, because here in the Netherlands we have this "organisation against swearing" which keeps putting all these posters against using swear words all over railway stations and bus-stops and the like. (the real-world equivalent of a website full of ads, except we don't get an ad-blocker) The posters are silly and sanctimonious too. Never fails to get my hackles up.

The flip side is, that whenever someone complains about swearing I think of those posters and can't take them seriously anymore. I just don't think swearing is a big deal, as long as it isn't insults directed at someone but general invective. Is there a particularly compelling reason to swear all the time? No. And overuse makes one sound immature. But neither do I get why people are so easily upset by it.

But don't worry, honourable councillors. I'll play nice. :P

Herds of giant grazing rats are stalked by sabre-toothed predatory rats. Given enough time, will a species of intelligent, cultivated rats emerge?"

I find that the best method of swearing in typing is to bang on your keyboard, like so: 423y68y89pY*(UIGUILPwe49043. Auto-censors your text and has the same spasmic relief sensation as actually blurting out rude words. Two with one stone. ;)

QIA, the more people make a fuss, the more people are apathetic towards their cause and, in fact, tempted to swear more. In your example, I imagine that more often than not, otherwise respectable citizens would have felt obliged to give the bloke with the posters a two fingered salute, or even say "Bugger off you old crank " (In dutch obviously. Saying it in english wouldn't do all that much good).

Meh, it's just words. How hard is it to ignore them? Equally, how hard is it to refrain from using it when typing non-real time messages on a board?

Meh, I personally am not too worried about the occasional mild swear-word as long as they are kept inoffensive towards other members (even to ones you might not know are there). In wolt's case, his post was clearly not that well thought out and it wasn't hard to read that sentence as if it was offensive to another member. I'm sure wolt meant it as a joke or even as a light-hearted comment, but to people who just casually browse by and don't really know how wolt functions yet (trust me, it takes some time ;) ), that post comes across very rude and offensive.

There have been several rants on this site where people have used similar words (though the word wolt used was a particularly nasty one), but those have never been directed towards a fellow member. I think the measures taken were justified and I hope that it's a bit clearer to wolt and to everyone else now that offensive behavior in conjuction with foul language is something that wil probably get your warning level raised. There have been very few incidents like this so far and I hope we don't have to judge them again and all of us can welcome wolt back naturally for the great and enthusiastic member that he is. He hasn't been chosen the second member of the day for nothing and I'd hate to see his eager and (admittedly somewhat rash) posting attitude cause him to lose this priviledge. Scar was right when he said that our hands are tied. When we notice recurrent behavior like that, we can't keep postponing the consequences indefinately. However much we'd like to -_- .

Anyway, I've spent enough words on the matter for my taste, so I hope that wolt has a good vacation in crete these weeks and can come back to us when he's had the chance to do some proper relaxing B).

Cheers,
Bodacious.

Totally, completely sigged.

If this were a permaban I'd probably be up in arms by now, but I think that maybe Wolt could benefit from some time to chill off. That said, the board feels eerily empty without him...
Polymphus is too busy and/or lazy to update song of the week this week. Stay tuned!

...you can still call me Rusty Tincanne if you want, though.

Been away for a few days and just caught up with this thread. One thing I noticed right off the bat is how much Sebrent was enjoying editing folks posts in the first two pages. What happened to mods not letting power go to their heads? :P (Fine Sebrent, go ahead an squeeze on in here if you'd like. I'd love the company in my post.)
They were probably just being economical (every separate post = another avatar and sigbanner = approx. 100kb+ out of your broadband download cap :P). But if it is indeed a concern, we assure you that an review accessment may be conducted regarding moderation practices and workplace protocol, and we will release any possible reports on the issue should the appropriate FOI application be made. And sorry for hijacking your post but sebrent wasn't around, and I thought you might like the company. *cuddles*

Probably it was for novelty's sake.

It's happened before. There was a time lots of mods were editing replies in people's posts. There were complaints, we reviewed our actions, and decided to put a stop to it. I'm sure the current new mods will do likewise once they get past the novelty bit.

I can't believe how many people have replied to a post/ subject like this.
That's all I wanted to add, really.

Oh darn.. now I've done it too. Oh damn, I said darn.

Paradoxes everywhere.

Mik

P.S; hey Scratch... you either have a deathwish or a wicked sort of humor.
I can't stop grinning..I dunno if it's because of the fun I'm going to have.. or because of your witty posts...
You decide.. ;)

This whole "power to our heads" thing kind of irks me. "Wow"... we can edit people's posts... we did that to inject our own answers to questions pertaining to the council or to inject light-hearted humor into the posts... like this hadn't been done before by other mods... like it's some type of "great power" and/or "abuse of power"... *checks archives and looks at other mods using their senses of humor*

I've obviously just stopped so me doing that or not is a null point, but I would think that "abusing power" would go more along the lines of us actually editing things in your posts that we don't agree with or for some other personal reason(s)... heck, we new guys didn't even edit Thraskittar's post; we asked him to edit it himself so that he could retain as much of his message as he possibly could while removing the offensive parts... *hopes that was not "abusing power" too* </sarcasm>

Back to the language thing, if people would actually read and follow the rules set forth here then there will be no problems. For those who do/can not follow the rules, please read the section on the warning system here. I think you'll notice that in both, foul/profane/explitive language is listed ... and "using an excessive amount of expletives" is a nice quote there. I think the only thing quiet about the site while wolt is gone is the lack of topics like his "April Fool's Day Joke" ...

Off Topic: Oh man, Scratch ... when Mik grins, death usually follows, lol. Watch out for the shadows!

It is most deffinatly the former. I have no sense of humour.

And that phrase is © Scratch-meaningful-yet-meaningless-quotations Inc. My lawsuit is in the post (It's black, with a red tie).

No real jokes were harmed in the making of this post. They are merely traumatised.

Hmmm... It would seem I hit a nerve there. Sorry. I was entirely kidding. No offense meant Sebrent. Just teasing a bit.

If I was to go a step further and really try to explain myself I'd state taht it is admirable that you were so on top of your job that you were the first person to chime in. But I wouldn't say taht, because then it'd look like I was groveling, and I try not to do that. ;)

Anyhow, the emoticon that I hired to purvey a sense of jest in my previois post obviously did not do the job it was hired to do. I will take it out back and give it a severe lashing as soon as I have the opportunity. Promise. :rogre:

Maybe it really is time for a Sebrent-to-Rusty language translator, eh?

Ha ha, Rusty, I see you remember what I said in our last discussion :P We really do need a translator ... in face-to-face situations my wife is often my Brent-to-English translator :P

The main reason it struck a nerve is because I have about 7 PMs/flames from one certain member who has been less than polite about that... but that's neither here or there ... I'm good now ... I've had 2 cups of coffee since that post :P

Back to Rusty ... grovel all you want ... it delays the Eshin contracts on you :ph43r:

And I don't cuddle with people in their posts on request
:P
