Brilliant post there, Vix.

I obviously come from a totally different angle, but you and I seem to have arrived at the same conclusions.

I hope that your new Ogres don't keep you away from this place too much. TUE is a much better place when you're active on it.

Back to the subject of censoring, would it have been better if he had said it phonetically, like effing? Or would that still be considered profanity?

Pretty sure I've been guilty of that on this forum. I've very probably 'disguised' the word even less. I'm a pretty crass sort of character.

Sometimes I reckoned there were times for swear words, as an extreme form of emphasis.

But then, I guess the difference was, I used them so sparingly, and so 'deliberately', that it was read in the light of the emphasis which was meant, rather than vulgar bandying of swear words for the sake of it.

Who knows? Still guilty though *slaps wrist* - rest assured, I wont be doing it again ;)

Swearing can be used for emphasis, but only in the real world.
On a forum, you can't get across the tone, or volume of your voice directly and therefore a swear word is simply that. In posts you have to work out the context of it and due to people having different mother langauges, it further complicates things.

The bottom line here is that swearing is not appropriate for a forum with young members! Its in the rules not to do that, so don't!

In real life, im constantly getting told off by my breeder for swearing, to add emphasis. All the time! <_<
However, I don't swear around her family, or children as that would be irresponsable.

Learn more words to use for emphasis. Or even just use forum functions to express different amounts of emphasis.

I'm not sure swearing can't be used for emphasis on a forum. Yeah, getting the tone across is difficult and all that... but the tone is still there.

I can say about a battle "and then the damn dragon charged my clanrats in the flank and my centre broke!"

It definitely conveys a different emphasis on than "and then the dragon charged my clanrats in the flank and my centre broke!"

In the first, it's about the dragon. In the second, attention is more naturally put on the breaking centre.

Now, of course you can still choose from a variety of milder and harsher swear words and avoiding the offensive ones shouldn't be difficult. (and failing to do so breaks the forum rules.) But I wouldn't say the odd expletive can't be used to help get a point across.
"I have a post-Armageddon vision. We and all other large animals are gone. Rodents emerge as the ultimate post-human scavengers. They gnaw their way through New York, London and Tokyo... within 5 million years, a whole range of new species replace the ones we know. Herds of giant grazing rats are stalked by sabre-toothed predatory rats. Given enough time, will a species of intelligent, cultivated rats emerge?"

Yes. 'That damn dragon.......' is absolutely fine as its not a full expletive.

Theres no need for the full expletives at all.

I used to drink in the roughest pub in my entire county and I know some very rough blokes, that don't swear in front of children.
I had a friend that used to work as a docker and I met him in the pub after he'd just got out of jail for 9 years, for attempted murder. He doesn't swear in front of children!

The Co13 are not ganging up on people and to think that is a bit foolish I think.
One of the main aspects of getting the job comes down to you being able to be selfless and not single a person out.

I'll welcome Wolt back to the site with open arms, when he comes back. But if he continualy breaks the rules i'll have to do my job. *hands tied* <_<

I'm in favour of making underempire's own swear-words.
Dunno if anybody here watches Spongebob Squarepants, but he uses words like 'barnacles!' or: 'tartar sauce!' which makes his point clear, AND is hilarious! So, who's in favor for creating the underempire's own swear-words?

Example: Rotten cheese
As in:"O rotten cheese, I just got myself rear-charged!" ><

Ow, and a quick question:
The thing wolt wrote wasn't OK, but you are allowed to use WTF, whilst everybody knows what that means to? Why's that?

(It is allowed, right, or I just got myself a warning... )

What about the use of spoonerism in place of blatant swearing?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoonerism

No naughtiness in the link but I can think of a few rude examples (which may warrant a warning) so ill leave them to your imagination.

:D

On bugmans brewery everyone uses the term "I swear too much".

Im not too fond of that though...

So I'm attacking your slaves with 5 chosen knights **throws dices** and horses **throws more dices** ok you are at -9 to Ld there is no way ...** a dice throw** .... F@@k !

The "I swear too much" thing on Bugmans Brewery is an automatic response to any swearing. It covers the word over with that.
