ey, im a field hockey player myself, love the game :D you run alot, get to shot the ball very hard and you're very tired at the end - just what i want from a sport. I played tennis but i couldn't spin my ball correct so i couldn't put force into it, and always running 10metres left and right isn't enough for me.

My younger brother also plays in my team, as the goal keeper, and he's wearing protection. I once jumped in because he wasn't there, and man that was scray to see those polyester balls fly near your head... glad i had a helmet!
When i see how my brother sometimes tackles the other players to get the ball, im soooo glad im a midfield player and don't have to run up towards that keeper! (aslong as the keeper gets the ball when making a save, the player that is next to the ball can get hurt - unintentionally, but we know that never happens, the keepers always get the ball, and your legs too and then you fly and fall, hard.)

Atleast other belgians are very good at tennis (woohooo Justine Henin! :D)

On the subject of tennis, it always freaks me out to hear both men and women scream so loud whenever they hit a ball... Now I know that in some sports (and perhaps even cultures) the scream is to ensure that psychological extra bit of power that you throw out of your system, but there ought to be some level of where this ought to stop. I mean, whenever you see Sharapova in a tennis match and hear her screaming with ever ball she hits, it makes me wonder how she's like whenever she's at home with her boyfriend in an intimite moment (and come on, with an overwhelming majority of guys here at UE.net, it has to be that I'm not the only one who has ever thought that).

Still, I have done judo for over a decade where you hear this screams as well from while to while (although some are actually of pain whenever someone had their arm dislocated), but it wasn't anything like you see during tennis... In the end, I am still a sucker for martial arts sports though. There is nothing that beats kicking the crap out of someone and them not minding at all. Trust me when I say that I've hurt quite a few people in those long years and being just under a weight level does have its uses. *evil grin*...
Man, I remember one tournament where I ended up third (out of four, but still...). The first match I was up against a guy that was just, well... heavy and who swung me over his should within a second. Short to say, I had a cracked lip, which I didn't notice until I start eating my lunch that began tasting a bit like blood. In the second match I had to face the club champion and surprisingly, I managed to make it very difficult for him as he needed the full five minutes to win. Still, the final match is something that'll stick with me for a long while. I was up against a dude with an overly fanatical coach. I managed to hurl him to the ground and did a armlock (which if you do it a bit too enthusiastic CAN break someone's arm), but that coach was just screaming like two meters away from us towards the guy that he should crawl out of it. *chuckles*... Oh man, luckily we never had someone like that, cause I would simply be paralyzed when someone starts making that much noise.

Having played rugby during a school tournament, I have to say I can most certainly appreciate the sport. While my heavy frame (and weight, which seems to help a bit in this sport) is somewhat of an advantage, it is -as shown by Scar's post- a great moment to unleash a bit of anger upon willing victims... I'm usually not a violent person, but I've had some moments during that tournament where I was wondering when I could expect the first punch coming my way. Aside from having 'locked' someones knees (arms around and hold VERY tight, hehehe) we had one person at a certain moment that had a free run from our line of scrimmage and began running really fast. He runs at the side of the field where some of their fellow school mates are cheering him on and unfortunately for him, I was the only hurdle on his way to scoring. One firm push later, he tumbled through his school mates and our team had a mighty laugh at their expense.

As like Burrows, I'm indeed someone that's a great defender in any sport. Usually not (that) afraid to get hurt and with my bulky frame (including a decent weight that ensure I'm hard to push away) I've always been picked quite soon in sports like football or rugby to act as defender in a team.

Stu: Did you know how good Forest used to be? Nowadays they are not doing great of course but the memory of what they used to be is not something to be diminished.

Yes Forest were a great team but I think their team now (some of their players attitudes) is a disgrace to their past memory. Maybe not so this year, but a few years back. You used to see their players going out and getting trashed etc. Luckily they have got that dude from Northampton in to sort them out otherwise they will stay in division 1.

:D

Oh yeah Vinz: Tennis players do the screaming/grunting to relax. When you play a groundstroke you are supposed to relax (breathe), grunting (so I have been told) is one form of doing that just do to relax. Perfectly legal unless you shout out when your opponent is about to hit the ball.

(Yeah I have thought that about Miss Sharapova too) :D
So I'm attacking your slaves with 5 chosen knights **throws dices** and horses **throws more dices** ok you are at -9 to Ld there is no way ...** a dice throw** .... F@@k !

Well played ^_^

Who changed the thread title? Some one's going to regret this.... :P

Anyway, it's a lovely clear day, I've just done my Chemistry GCSE, as I type this I can look out of my window and see the Wembly arch in the distance (although not at the same time. i'm lookingat the keyboard when I type, but you know what I mean) and I'm just getting ready for a kickabout in the park to let of some steam. Grunting relaxes you eh? I must try that one day :P

You should have heard myself and some of my friends at the pub the other day; there was a table tennis table in the beer garden. Needless to say, some of the other regulars enjoying a quiet pint gave us some strange looks ^_^ I believe one of my friends was being Sharapova whilst I was Serena Williams (I believe I sounded almost Orc-like).

Cheers to defenders! Can't win if the other team keeps scoring :P

@Mallekha the Overwhelmer: You think it's scary being a goalkeeper in hockey? Try being it in soccer/futbol. That's the one position I had no desire to play. A 1v1 is crazy because you are literally diving without pads onto the ball and player while the player is trying to rocket the ball into the goal ... often times the goalkeeper gets kicked (sometimes intentionally... one of many reasons I dislike forwards). Because of this and my position as sweeper, I like and have great respect for good goalkeepers... especially in soccer/futbol (btw, I hate that we call it soccer in the USA ... it's retarded ... and the sport we call football doesn't use your feet for more than running and punts/fieldgoals ... it's just retarded ...

Sh...oots.

Himself in the foot.

CURSE YOU VINZ! Your mind control is *bzzzz* one of your most attractive features B) :P

Serberent, 1v1 is SO fun! My friends and I spent an entire afternoon once just taking turns in goal and having 1v1s. I've got a far better technique and shot but my friend is far more powerful. My other friend was kind of a mixture of both. It was SOOOO fun! And yeah, I've broken my wrist twice playing in goal so I'm now excused from all duty.

Football is the game to play when you just want a laugh and something to pass the time.

EDIT: Bah, double post...

Curious. At soo bahk when we do punching or kicking drills, the last technique is generally accopanied by a kiap (? something along those lines). The expansion/contraction of your body accompanied by appropriate breathing is supposed to give strength to the technique. The shout helps you exhale quickly, as well as having a psychological effect. The yell is also, I believe, supposed to indicate an intent to strike.

I think there's probably also a qui reference somewhere within the origins of it...

Martial arts are the best of the sports, but watching competition sparring is rather dull, as both fighters are generally so worried about giving away points that most of the match is spent out of range of one another, just dancing around. :( [/color]

When I did tae kwon-do for many years, we never did any shouting. We used sharp breathing out to contract the stomach muscles, which helps twist your trunk into a technique.
But it actually sounds like boxers punching.

When I started doing Jitsu at university, they did the kiai (sp?) and I found it all rather silly. :P
If it works for you then fine. But if you've got your mouth open and you get countered on the jaw, you can have it disslocated or broken a lot easier than with your mouth shut. Nasty!

Wish I had the time to go back to tae kwon-do (and the effort) :P
Dema in a PM about my fluff

Wish I could plot like you can, you must have a mind like a corkscrew to turn all those scheming corners

I'm a Saint-Etienne fan. there yet another struggling french team. anyone born in the 60s or before will know them. they were really good in the 70s-80s but havnt been even in the UEFA cup since. The only reason english foot ball is some of the best club football is cos the clubs have enormous amounts of money ( however some still cant spend it *cough* chelsea).

oh sorry we're talking bout martial arts. I do shotokan karate. its like a stricter form of karate than the other types. we dont use stomach muscle contraction but hip action to generate power.

[size0]Double-posts are generally frowned upon. Fixed this one for you, please try to avoid doing it again. ;)

Oh, and this is now a thread for ALL sports, so feel free to talk about any sport.. ;)

Sneaky: ...Fair enough I had no idea they were quite that bad. As i said with limited knowledge i do not really know about fans or managers behind the scenes etc I just watch the football. Note: My Dad and I are not in any way hooligans. About as far an opposite as you could get.

I used to do Ju-Jitsu and that had none of that shouting stuff but like the Field Hockey I have not done it in years.
