The USA's soccer team sucks That said, since I'm an American of German heritage (and it doesn't hurt that the Germans rock) I'm a big fan of the German soccer players ... heck, I'm a big fan of a lot of things German, lol.... food, programming, etc. |

Amen. I find watching football to be very dull... Rugby's better, and cricket is a good summery drifty game. Painting ratmen with cricket on in the backround = awesome. Speaking of cricket, one of the west indians in the test match we just won was batting for 6 hours? That's stamina.. The constant whining and rolling and fake-pain and diving in football are very sad, though.
Yeah. German things really do tend to rock, in my experience. It's great. [/color]

Have you been spying on me Stinky?I've been doing a lot of painting ratmen whislt the cricket is on lately. That batsmen is most likely Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Good player and the captain for them in the last test. He did very well I thought! The manliness of cricket comes from playing on when you've just been hit by the ball. I once got a cricket ball in the mush (face for you non-UK'ers :P) and it wasnt too nice. I felt all my teeth rattle and had a bruise on my face, with an inprint of the seam in it, in purple. Painful, but slightly cool. ![]() Anyone who wants to stand in the way of Steve Harmison bowling at 90mph has got some guts. |

How about standing in front of a puck moving at 150mph? Although we ice hockey players do have a bit more padding You don't get any amateur dramatics in ice hockey or cricket, they're proper sports (although it would be quite difficult to do it in cricket! "Ouch! Umpire, he fouled me!")James |

Aye, I know what you guys are talking about with the people who "fake fouls" and "fake injuries" and what-not. It's actually what makes me enjoy video games and board games more than sports. Played soccer since I was four years old ... one game had a guy I was defending dribble and then dive near the box several times ... ended up with me getting a yellow card and them getting several free kicks (thank god no PKs) ... so one time right before he got there, I just stopped and put some distance between us right before he dove ... ref got onto him and his jig was up. He got carded and now I was able to mark him very roughly as the ref had no pity for the little cheater ... gotta be smart about these things. Work the system rather than let the system work you. On another soccer story, back when I was more hot-tempered than I am now (all men in my family have a temper, it's genetic ... but we cool off with age), another guy I was marking (I'm was a defender if you can't tell ... sweeper to be exact) was trying to get my riled up and my head out of the game or something ... eventually when play was on the other half of the field I decided to rile him up physically since he was trying to rile me up verbally ... so I shoved him into the ground ... only got a yellow card and he was scared of me rest of the game ... not the most morale act, but I instilled fear in my opponent and he stopped trying to rile me up and get my head out of the game ... which instead happened to him, lolz. And even further back ... when I had just started playing soccer at 4 years old ... some kid knocked me down from behind right at half time (I had the ball, he was trying to get it). So I popped back up on my feet and punched him a few times in the face. I was four; you can get away with anything at four. Again, a yellow card though ... and a league record, lolz. Maybe I should've played hockey. These things are normal in that sport ... and, yes ... I'm a mean mean man

 Thats pretty funny Sebrent (about your wife owning your hair). I up till about 3 months ago had very long hair. Well below my shoulders sort of long! I got bored of it, so had it all off and down to a number 3, which is still stubble, but not much. I'm not allowed to do that again, because I apparently look like a convict. Once i've had my friends wedding, its all going off again. I shall suffer the breeders wrath. ![]() I got in trouble playing sports at school once. That was playing rugby though. I was the mega-nerd kid at school. Very quiet, small and spent all my free time in the library. The only thing I was missing to complete the image was the big glasses. We were playing rugby one day and I actually was captain of my local team. So everyone was surprised when I absolutely mullered the years big bully in a tackle. I did it three times and he finaly got embarrassed and hit me. Of course I had rubgy brain turned on, so headbutted him. He had to leave the field with a bleeding nose and I got sent in by a VERY shocked teacher and rest of my year. No one seemed to bother me much after that.

Talking of real hockey, I'm sure what gets played on ice isn't that (I joke, ice hockey looks fun, i'd try it if I was able to skate) Real hockey is field hockey, not even the goalie gets to wear as much padding as an ice hockey player, and the bigger the bruise, the more manly you've played (allegedly). Personally I value my body, so i make sure I play in goal, where i at least get a helmet. |

Conference South FTW! Bromley have just got promoted, so I'll be wathing the, er, JOYS of CS next year when i can't afford to go to Ashburton. No diving down there, that's for bloody sure ![]() Rgby? Exciting to watch? *snooze time* I can accept playing it but watching it is just a lot of big buggers punching each other and diving over lines. Too stop start for my liking and not being able to pass forwards, while perfectly acceptable in a rules sense makes it so DULL. Quick counter attacks are broken down every time because the opposition can always retreat faster than you can advance and can leave a player as a stop gap to buy the others time. No exploitation of space because kicking is so erratic. It ends up in a ruck and then you stop, restart and repeat. Cricket whilst painting was the joy of my life untill bloody Murdoch took it all away from me <_< . I still play cricket but have lost a lot of intrest since it was taken off terrestrial. Connected topic 1: Fotball Italia is back, on Channel 5 (GOALLLLLAZIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!)! If the Richardson-meister is back I shall weep with happiness at every cliche! Connected topic 2: Standing up to Harmirson is merely a matter of odds at the moment. 50% of balls will go nowhere near you ![]() Serb, how is Beckham mania affecting US soccer? FourFourTwo did a feature this month saying it has increased the number of "Diseney McFans" but it won't hold it up. Although it went on to say some sides like Chivas have a realy hardcore fanbase. Mainly latin american I hear, although i may be wrong. Scarver: Hehehe, I DO have the glasses but spend my lunch hours kicking lumps out of... erm.. well the turf mainly, as I completely miss the ball. But regardless ![]() And finally, the Scratch sporting tour arrives at: Hockey. I played hockey (field hockey) because I had to but I played it like I play football (running into space and setting people up. Not getting hit to hard. That sort of thing) but couldn't do it for long. My school only had one-size-fits-all sticks and at 6'1, that size was just the teeniest bit too small. I went arround hunchbacked for the rest of the day. Never again. I still play footie and Cricket though. Shall we change this to the General Sport Thread? Then Discostu can go where he really wants to and start waxing lyrical about the French Open etc

SA: I couldn't skate when I first started playing ice hockey (I had actually played field hockey for a few years prior). It's great fun and I love it. Absolutely love it. And trust me; although ice hockey players wear armour, you still get hurt a LOT. James |

Here Here! This one talks some sense. (I should have known being a gooner an all).
Yes please. Tennis is a real mans sport. Have you guys seen the size of Nadal and the other beasts on tour? You get 18 year old kids that look 30 - they are huuuge. You would'nt mess with a proper tennis player - they make footballers look like pansies. That is the only thing I dislike about footballers - most behave like little kids and get paid too much money that they dont know what to do with it!!! Bring in a salary cap! Also a 120mph tennis ball to the goolies hurts a lot. ![]()
PS. That phrase is awesome! Im gonna use it a lot, thanks scratch

Football- Limited exposure, limited current football affairs knowledge but surprising over all due to being a PES Fanatic. Watch most of the big matches in the big competitions and end up seeing a fair few Liverpool games. "Supports": Liverpool (This is pretty much solely attributed to my Dad doing so.) The pansy/diving stuff is always over stated by those who do not enjoy it. It happens especially little when English players are playing and say something like German. Its the rule lawyering Italians and Portuguese and such who always seem to hassle the ref on all decisions and make him give out cards and such. Watch Liverpool and who they are usually against you do not get much diving rubbish then. Sneaky: PSV are good yes but why be against an English side? Especially Liverpool and the likes of Gerrard and Carragher some truly decent English footballers. Do not really know/care enough any other sports to watch/support any other teams apart from the odd Panthers ice hockey home game. Stu: Did you know how good Forest used to be? Nowadays they are not doing great of course but the memory of what they used to be is not something to be diminished. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_No...gham_Forest_F.C. http://www.nottinghamforest.premiumtv.co.u...~819169,00.html Note: If you want to complain about the information on the sites above just do not direct it at me. I just knew Forest used to be pretty damn good and the above is about 5 seconds worth of research. As for me in sports personally? I am a tackler. I tackle. Do not expect anything more and you may be pleasantly surprised upon occasion. I used to play in a team in field hockey so might still be good at that. In other sports I think I do much better then I look like I should and I am usually quite up for a game or a mess around with a ball. Underlord Burrows |

As a supporter of Everton I'm afraid I've been subject to decades of taunts and gloating from Liverpool fans. Of course not all of them, and I don't generalise to all (heck, my younger brother is a staunch Red).......and years ago I would have been happy to support Liverpool as an English team in Europe. But quite simply, these days I do not like what Liverpool and their fans have brought to the game. Hillsborough. Heysel. Most recently that poor waiter who was murdered by Liverpool fans. I'm sick of Liverpool fans always playing the victim role and blaming everyone else (the FA, UEFA, foreign police etc etc) for the trouble they always seem to be in the centre of. Heck, it was only a couple of weeks ago that the UEFA chiefs labelled Liverpool fans amongst the worst in Europe.....cue the 'outrage' from the fans and directors, who singularly forgot to admit that the disgraceful scenes outside the stadium for the Champions League final were caused by their own fans fighting amongst themselves as they stole tickets from each other (whilst others rushed the turnstiles). This from fans who have been through the agony of Hillsborough - my contempt for their behaviour I'm afraid has overshadowed the fact that they are an English team. It has been argued that I am bitter because English teams were banned from European competition in the 80's due to the Heysel incident, just as Everton had qualified for the major European competitions. And that would be to an extent correct. Some Liverpool fans were solely responsible for the lengthy time that English clubs were in the European wilderness. But get them to accept that? Not a chance. And don't even get me started on how the Club started whining when they failed to qualify for the Champions League a couple of seasons ago, and got UEFA to change the rules to allow them to compete (at the expense of another club who had qualified correctly and were subsequently paid off.) *pauses to reduce blood pressure* So....whilst I accept Liverpool are a succesful club with a few very skilled players, it will be a cold day in hell before I give them my support. Right.....cup of tea anyone? |
