I'm quite pleased with this. It turned out better than expected. The wraith fight was supposed to lead into the showdown with the vampire, but it ended up quite a bit longer, and I wanted to get this bit up tonight. DeVreekz hunched atop the crumbling the statue, the rain pattering around him and on his fur, making it heavy and sodden. Not a good thing for a ratsassin. He pulled his thick cloak closer around him and crouched down further, turning into a mere shadow on the wall. He heard a sound behind him. A ghostly footstep on rain-soaked marsh. He skulked silently. There was no way that whatever made the footsteps could see him. The footstep came again, closer. DeVreekz turned. Opposite him, standing silently, stood a pair of white ghostly figures, faintly transparent in the fading moonlight. Pale blades shone grimly in their hands. DeVreekz smiled. A pair of albino man-things? This would be easy. In a flash, he threw a pair of throwing stars to their necks. The wraiths didn’t even bother dodging. The stars simply passed through them as DeVreekz watched, shocked. “Bugger-bugger” he squeaked. As one, the wraiths leapt, their blades descending simultaneously. With another squeak, DeVreekz jumped to the side, just in time - the twin arms of the statue fell, dismembered. DeVreekz loosed a volley of throwing stars, knives and assorted cutlery, but it simply passed through the wraiths. Snarling, DeVreekz drew a trio of glowing green blades, hurling one from his tail. It hit the wraith and passed through, but where it passed, a gash appeared in the wraith’s essence, and it let out an unearthly scream. DeVreekz grinned, and leapt towards the injured wraith, but its blade leapt out to meet his two. A second strike was parried likewise, and a third, and a fourth. The wraith struck back, its ghostly blade moving faster than any living eye could track, but by sheer fluke, DeVreekz blocked it and struck under the wraith’s guard, burning its essence and causing it to retreat. The wraith’s ghostly eyes narrowed, and its partner stepped up behind DeVreekz. He stepped backwards. The wraiths followed. Before long, he was backed up against a wall. He flicked a third blade into his tail and prepared for his last fight. The wraiths stepped forwards and raised their blades. They morphed and changed in the light of the now-dawning sun, and descended again as scythes. The wraiths leaped. DeVreekz, however, leapt faster. He leapt upwards, his blades descending upon a polished silver gutter. With a crash, it fell, him upon it, landing atop the wraiths. The silver cut like a knife through their collective essence, and they let out a ghostly wail. One vanished in a wisp of smoke. DeVreekz could see no sign of the other. Warily, he stepped off the gutter and forward a few paces. Nothing happened. He shrugged, sheathed his blades, and continued back towards the castle. Time to finish the job. A sudden wait slammed into his back, a paper-thin blade sliding between his ribs, colder than ice. DeVreekz collapsed, the world turning cold and black around him. Expect part three of the DeVreekz Vampire Saga tomorrow. Hope you like this
