Rat of many titles
I designed this as the epilogue to the Saga of Vartrak, the central character of my Warlord Clan's fluff. I hope the cool title got you interested; it's not a technique I use often... :D

Note: I suggest you read 'Chieftain Vartrak' before this, you'll understand the early analogies.

The blue-robed Skaven cowered behind a huge broken, triangular shield. A strange sense of deja vu gripped him and he heard his father's voice. "I've been here, Vart, don't worry. Don't worry. I've been here." The rat scuttled away in panic and a different voice shrieked manically, "Look for the dying! HAHAHAHAHA!" He skittered over to a corpse-pile and collapsed onto the body of a clanrat. He rolled over and shivered.

The corpse-pile seemed to meld into a new shape - a huge and monstrous rat in slave garb. It threw forward its chains and they wrapped around him. The monster cried in a booming voice, "Look for the dying!" It changed to a massive clanrat and repeated the mocking mantra. "Look for the dying..."

The creature promptly vanished and the Skaven was on an empty street. There was a blinding flash and a massive horned vermin rose up above him. "Chieftain!" proclaimed the Horned Rat. "Look for the dying!..." It embraced him and and shrank into the form of an elderly Grey Seer. The blue-dressed one said "Father..." in an empty voice. The Seer replied, "It'll be fine son."

The rat fell out of his father's arms and into the blackness. The Grey Seer's voice came again.

"Remember son... if you want answers, look for the dying."

Vartrak threw himself forward, beads of sweat on his brow. It was cool and dark and he was sitting up in bed. He stood shakily. The room was quiet. It must have been midnight. Vartrak stared through the window.

"Vartrak, are you all right?" A small female voice, that of his faithful breeder Marika, emerged behind him. Vartrak bowed his head. "It's alright-right Marika. Go-go back to sleep." He heard her shifting in the bed behind.

"Look for the dying" was all he could think of. Somehow it seemed to be important, like a factor in events to come.

Dawn peeked through the sky.

THE SURNIK WAR HAS BEEN RAGING FOR THREE YEARS. AND IT MAY RAGE FOR MANY MORE...

THE TIME OF ASCENDANCY BEGINS!
