Birth of a Prophet Fetid aromas drifted out of the dank chamber, several hundred feet below the surface of the Old World. Any casual passer-by might notice the acrid stench of warpstone and the tingling, skin crawling sensation of raw magic being shaped by an expert in the craft. Of course, no casual passer-by would have been permitted to come that close to the laboratory of the Grey Seer Verminous Fang. The Eshin guards have been well paid in warpstone and breeders to keep any and all interlopers away, and the corpses of those who had been paid to spy on the Grey Seer littered the hallways as testiment to the diligence of Clan Eshin, and as a gorey warning to any one else who'd try. Inside the chamber, parchments lined the walls, tacked in place by crudely fashioned or scavenged nails. The writings were largely unitelligible, notesd written over notes, written over notes; the parchment itself often having originally been from another source. Here is an almost completely covered announcement of a local fair in Middenheim, there is a barely recognizable page stripped from a Book of Grudges with other sources mixed in that would have the Librarians at the Royal College in Altdorf drooling with expectation, were these wondrous texts not despoiled by the Arcane and forbidden writings of the Skaven. Verminous Fang stood over a small cauldron, mixing in such arcane ingrediants as griffin feathers, dragon scales (almost certainly taken from the dragon's nest while it was safely away), the blood of an elf, and stone taken from the ruins of the giants. As he added the ingrediants, he would step to one of the parchments on the wall, examining the myriad notes and theories before grabbing another of the exotic ingrediants. Finally, Verminous Fang crumbled a few pieces of warpstone into dust and tossed it into the cauldron. After ensuring that the concoction was wel mixed, the Seer took a small sip. Stars danced in his eyes and a sense of vertigo overcame him. Verminous Fang gripped the desk until the sensation had passed, letting the fog clear from his mind. He then took a small vial, filled it with the substance, and wordlessly held it out. An shape emerged from the shadows, took the vial, and then disappeared. These Eshin Adepts knew the plan, and would carry it out without fail. On them, Verminous Fang could depend. On them, Verminous Fang hung his future. ***** Gerwulf woke with a start, coming to sit staight up in bed and tossing his covers to the floor. He sat there for several seconds, just trying to catch his breath. Sweat poured down his face and stung his eyes, though he did not, could not blink. He finally reached to the night stand and poured some water into his cup. Had he lit a candle first, he might have seen the green flecks mixed into his water. Had he lit the candle, he would have seen the man-sized rat in dark clothing slip out the window. Instead, he dark thirstily from his cup and poured another. Gerwulf considered reaching for his brandy, but thought twice. He would not give the demons in his head more power over him by drink. For three nights, Gerwulf had been having the most horrible dreams. The first night, he had dreamed that his sister would trip and fall from the bridge. Had Gerwulf not been nearby, she would have drowned. Gerwulf spent the entire rest of the day praying his thanks to Sigmar. Last night, he had dreamed taht Amalrich, the local butcher, would lose his hand in an accident at work. Gerwulf was not nearby, and was unable to prevent that accident. Two visions, and bad ones at that, and Gerwulf was beginning to think that Sigmar was not involved. Tonight's dream reinforced that belief. He saw his own self behind a curtain of fire, a witch hunter smiling at the sight. Gerwulf would have to be careful, he would have to pretend he didn't know things were about to happen. He would have to let the demons in his head show him things, and know that he was powerless to stop them. ***** The dark shape slipped passed the guards, his scent known to them. He stood before the Grey Seer and bowed, awaiting acknowledgement from the exaulted figure. Verminous Fang looked up from his research and nodded at the Essin Adept. The figure rose and spoke. "The potion works, Great Seer. He sees with his mind the future." "Good-good. The hunters are aware?" "We have made sure of that, Great Seer. One comes to the man-thing city of Mattenguard now, Great Seer." Verminous Fang nodded and waved the Adept away. Things were going well, and the man-thing would soon have no choice but to speak to the Seer of what will be and of what might be. The Seer began to put his potions away in cases built to resist the normal damage caused by travel. This potion would shorten the subjects life greatly, and there may be need for more prophets in the future. |

Welcome back to the fluff section VF...you have been sorely missed. Good to see that you have not lost any of your writing skills over time! I look forward to reading of your character's exploits and encourage all UE members to try and write for the forthcoming Nemesis Crown campaign. |
