In a battle I fought yesterday I had a regiment of skaven Plague monks that charged a unit of goblins in one turn and then in my next turn I charged the same unit of goblins with a unit of censer bearers so the formation looked like this: G=goblin M=monks C=censers P=plague priest GGGGGGG GGGGGGG GGGGGGG GGGGGGG MMPMMCCC MMMMMCC MMMMM MMMMM MMM one turn later turn my plague priest, champion, and 3 other monks killed all 7 of the front line goblins. My opponent then said I could not fight with the censer bearers because I had killed the full front rank and so there was no one there to fight. Is that true? I looked through the rules and I couldnt see anything about that. I mean, I know he couldnt fight back against me since his front rank was destroyed but does that really prevent me from being able to fight him. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? |

Your censor bearers still have the right to fight. Though from your diagram it is hard to see how your censor bearers could not have hit him in the flank. |

I think this is wrong. I'm fairly certain that when you kill off the entire front rank of an enemy unit, either more of them step forward or yours advance (though you don't move the models anywhere). Otherwise you could have ranks 1 wide and only ever loose one model a turn (outnumber/standard alone would fix combat res from that). I'm fairly certain, but open to argument as always.

I cant give you a page reference because I dont know where it is, but Im almost certain that all models in BTB fight, as the models in the 2nd rank step up to take the place of their fallen comrades. Also, thinking about it logically, combat is never 2 units standing in straight lines hittting those directly infront of them, its a swirling melee with soldiers pushing forwards if they see an opertunity. They dont stop when those directly infront of them are dead. Oh, and if your oponent had a champion then he should have been able to attack with his attacks, as champions can always fight unless they are targeted and killed... - Sammy |

Sammy is right on what he is saying, everybody in BtB gets to make all their attacks. The rule is on Page 36 under "Excess Casualties" |

The only people who do not get to make attacks are the front rank of the enemy regiment you obliterated. |

The Monks and Censor Bearers both get to attack the Goblins. It's not like the Bearers wait patiently for the Monks to attack before attacking themselves. Can you imagine a frothing-at-the-mouth, frenzied, flail-toting rat being patient? "Pardon me, sir, but are you quite finished yet? I don't want to intrude upon your quarrel, but I tire of your frivolling." *Sits down cross-legged and sips his warp brewed tea* Nit Pick: In your situation, wouldn't the Censor Bearers have attacked first, since they were they ones who had charged that turn? |

Thank you so much for your input, especially Nick for the page number. I knew it wasnt right because it just didnt make any sense for it to happen that way. |

I thought if you wipe out the enemy front rank then models step up to take their place, so you can fight with the censers and the goblins can fight back |

The goblins dont get to fight back if their front rank is killed the stepping up thing just means that everyone who didnt die stays in combat and can still fight. |
