I'm just curious how many of you use the Champion Upgrade. I've been doing some theoryhammer and such on the uses of the champion upgrade for the Skaven army, but I want to see how much you all use them already.

They're only useful to protect characters, in my opinion. With the possible exception of Stormvermin, who benefit more from the extra attack if they use their halberds.

They gnaw their way through New York, London and Tokyo... within 5 million years, a whole range of new species replace the ones we know. Herds of giant grazing rats are stalked by sabre-toothed predatory rats. Given enough time, will a species of intelligent, cultivated rats emerge?"

A regiment is not a regiment if there is no champion! *bsb*

...Ok, I sometimes take gutter runners without a champion (damn that black skaven upgrade is useless  ), but even then I feel a little guilty about it :( . Nightrunners always get a champion upgrade though.

Cheers,

i usually go for the upgrade. infact i only drop it if i can't fit in.

i personally think it just adds to the feel of the unit. of course some units its just pointless, like slaves, gutter runners and the like. but most of my ranked stuff gets a champ. gives me an exscuse to stick some accesorys on him lol

When i have leftover points the first thing i do is add champion. I always give them, to my clanrats unit because they are filled with character, but i usually don't give any to my plague monks.
I have a few bare metal dark elf model for sale, if interested pm me.

Bunny ear says flop

While I'm a firm believer of taking no clawleader in a unit of clanrats (as one champions equals two clanrats), I do appear to be constantly taking them in my units of stormvermin and/ or plague monks. Especially the latter makes this choice more interesting, as the frenzy special rule and option for an additional handweapon ensures that for less points then with the clanrats, you get much more attacks with a champion in your unit! ^_^

That's why I put my guys in the back, saves another 10 points, and that expensive magical weapon you allways take?
Ha! rubbish!

I ALWAYS put a champion in a unit...I just love modelling them, since there is no set "champion" piece...

So, admittedly, I only really add them for fluff reasons, but it's an extra attack, so you'll nearly always use it, and it protects characters, especially wizards.

The only unit I'd REALLY put one in even if I didn't care at all about theme would be Plague Monks- the 3 (with 2 hand weapons) attack champion is very effective.

I'm not sure if it's actually ever worth it, except for character-protecting, but then again, I'd pay 50 points purely for making something look uber-cool. If you can't have fun making up funky units and combinations, what fun is there? Better to loose with a fun army than win (or loose) with a boring one...

I mostly try to field unit champions, if I have the points for them.
Why? I just like them.
Is it wise? Probably not.
IMO a unit is not a unit If they are not led by an champion or other character.
