The Great Unclean One

Has anyone here ever tried to build a Warhammer fleet? One of my friends has found rules and has started building his own Dwarf fleet and has told me he's going to write up some info on how you build your own fleet (see here)

I'm starting a Beasts of Chaos one because it's easy to make the smaller boats - just lolly sticks and some accessories.

I made two Skaven ships once... and I have a half-finished one that I use to hold pencils... :P It was quite fun.

Dabbling GM. Clanrat loon. 6th Edition Aficionado. Bitter.

I have a big sheet of MDF in my garage. I just need the time and motivation... <_<

I found the Warhammer ahoy! rules before the compendium, and would use them as a base for naval games, as they focus on slightly bigger ships...

Of course, what would be really great would be fielding accurately beweaponed ships. E.g, a third class ship of the line with 72 cannon on three decks [allowing a full 36-gun broadside] ^_^

That'd be awesome. ^_^

[Mutate] What's the state of that forum? Is it mostly dead? Or is it active?

I've always loved the idea of using a mix of ships/army. Never read/used the General's Compendium rules though. What I'd like is more of a campaign where you move/fight in ships and then play games for control of islands. It'd be done on a HUGE map...

Still, these rules seem pretty good. *shrug*

What was the name of the old school warhammer naval game? waaay back at least 12 years ago, that looked cool!

Though im not sure skaven were in it since we dont like the water

From what i remember there were Empire, High Elves, Dark Elves, Chaos, Dwarves, maybe some others

Though fluff wise im sure we were skulking around in the bottom of the ships ready to comandeer the ships

This is really bugging me now as i want to play it!! That and WH Quest and Bloodbowl!

Bring back Old School!!!!!!!

*grins*... If you're a fan of the naval warfare and its ships during the late middle ages, I'd suggest you should watch the Hornblower TV series, as these give a fairly decent insight in how battles at sea went during that period. If I'm correct, it is based upon a series of novels, so perhaps you should check those out as well. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find them, but I've seen the TV series (I actually have all of them on DVD) and I personally loved the series, if only due to the fairly accurate representation of how battles were fought back then. It is one of the few series that I rate REALLY high, but you do need to be a fan of that genre to appreciate it.

The one problem you'd have with a game system on such a scale, is (aside from the detail you'd be going into) the amount of statistics and dice rolling you'd suddenly be faced with. While Man 'O War isn't really a realistic system as it only has a few big guns per ship, it is a system that manages to combine realism (crew, hitting the vessel from different sides and its effects from such hits) with a game system that is feasible to (i) learn and (ii) play without needing to go in an awesome amount of detail. Unfortunately just that problem that the game is O.O.P. and Games Workshop isn't going to republish it for a long, long while... Off course, 'Warhammer Ahoy' has the advantage that you can indeed go into detail with multiple cannons (just go mad!) and the crew needed to man them, but those one-on-one battles usually make me think of a skirmish, while I personally would enjoy massive sea battles with dozens of vessels shooting at one another!

Hornblowers rules!

It just got me wondering, though games workshop wont bring out something along this line... has there ever been a computer game where you command whole fleets of ships.

I know there was one where you command/build a space fleet for the PC about 3-5 years ago that was quite good, but ive never seen anything to do with naval warfare on a big scale.

*ponders*... While I haven't recently seen any games involving naval warfare, in the past there have been more then enough such games, from the level of RTS towards that of the FPS. I guess it's a matter of browsing the web for titles, but they are indeed most certainly there!
