That was SICK!

One of those spores would make a great idea for a plague monk centerpiece though ;) .

Warhammer really helps you see the positive side of things sometimes, doesn't it ^_^ .

Cheers,
Bodacious.

Wow, that's pretty interesting stuff.

Reminds me of the Zerg from starcraft, and to a lesser extent (though cronologically first) the Tryanids ^_^

I wonder If a mutant strain could be engineered to effect humans...

That's beautiful.. in a creepy way... I am reminded of facehuggers.

Yup, it's cordyceps. Used in chinese herbal medicines, where they dry the long stems and brew it or something. Though I wouldn't want to ever consume one of those things now that I know what they're capable of...

Isn't there a scene in Nausicaa where there's a giant dead bug covered in mushrooms? I'm sure it's in there somewhere. (yup, it's by Miyazaki, one of his earlier ones)

Ah, thought so! Cheers.

Cordyceps is an interesting fungi. In fact a lot of fungi are interesting, as its such a diverse group of organisms, with many wierd and wonderful ways of proliferation. We spent a decent part of a module at university, studying them.
It can even alter the way an animal behaves, in its early stages. Pretty amazing really!
One such was is so that ants, once infected climb to the top of plants and stay there. That way their more likely to get eaten and transfered into the digestive system of a larger organism, which is really the fungi's place of procreation. Thats a different fungi though.[/sciencenerd]

Yup. Just like with these fungi when they die giant spores sprout from their bodies. I was searching around but I couldn't find if this was the fungi that Miyazaki was refering too, but I guess it's a good chance it is.

Yeah we actually have a copy of it in our Blockbuster here! Be sure though to watch the new Nausicaä and not that old Warriors of the Wind one <_<
