Eshin Sorcerer equipment dilemma

Okay,
At this point I'm thinking about restarting my current warband (that I haven't touched in quite a while), though with the Eshin Sorcerer I have a dilemma regarding the equipment. Cause the basic rule that lots of people use regarding wizards is that they ought to be kept out of combat as much as possible, while on the other hand each model within the warband can become as tough as nails. So, while building my warband I came to the following possibilities:

1.) dagger, spear, sling
This equipment is basically for use to keep enemy models at bay with (i) a spear that grants it a first strike and (ii) a sling to get some short range shooting that could nail enemies against the wall... Though, it also means that with this given equipment, the sorcerer needs to be kept in reserve, as it is not intended for combat at all. Next to that, also with skills (and eventually spells as well), I need to have defensive abilities and NOTHING offensively.

2.) dagger, fighting claws
Combine the equipment above with Art of Silent Death and Black Fury. This would create a WS3, S4, A5 with parry and a re-roll if failed charge. While the assassin adept can be vicious at some times, the given combination creates a more lethal attack then you can come up with, with so few upgrades. The only point is though, that this is an 'assaulty' equipment and needs the skills/ spells to back it up!

So, what might be better? Equipment #1, or equipment #2?

I think that the first would be good in one off games, while the second would be better in campaigns.

I would always go with the latter... I tend to find that Black Fury is the only Skaven spell really worth casting...

*nods*... True, but you roll a D6 to determine what your spell is and I usually roll for that one only when I start my first match in a campaign to keep things a bit honest. (Yeah, I'm a Skaven, so with the possible combo's, some of my opponents tend to not trust me that much). So it's a bit of a gamble between going defensive and swop items later, or go assaulty from the beginning with the chance I have a defensive spell.

Ah right... I had forgotten about that bit... it was all so far away... and I got Black Fury, so all was well.

I still say go for the second option, though. I have found that my shooting was extremely ineffectual (maybe it's just me, though), and I ended up giving all of my models close combat weapons, and they have all done SO much better...

Well, as we've been going through a few (old) Mordheim discussions, I might just as well jump back into this one as well. Even while I have never been able to get to starting the warband afresh, or even playing a single game of Mordheim since I started this topic, I'm still going for the fighting claws. It might be the case that I only get a defensive spell that ought to be used from a distance, but fighting claws are a rare option when I need to buy them after I've created the warband... That would mean that if I don't buy them now, I might have an awful lot of trouble when I try to pick them up at a later point in a campaign.
