Hey all. First of all, this forum is great! I love it, but lately my activity on warhammer generally has been decreasing. I have barely painted anything for about 3 months now, the reason to this is computer games. Somehow I get enslaved by them. Warhammer is a great hobby, and I it's a very rewarding hobby. At this point, I have two armies: Skaven (of course) and Orcs and Goblins, both horde armies. And when I look at my painting desk, I see mountains of unpainted and unassembled models, and im not kidding! I love painting, but I just can get myself to work. All those piles of unfinished models isnt cheering me up. Warhammer is of course a hobby that should come first instead of computer games, but I just cant get myself to work with warhammer anymore Any suggestions on how to get back my will to paint ? I really feel like I'm stuck in a dead end here... And I really want obsession with warhammer to be "revived" once more. <<Gratwhol>> |

Ah yes, I know the feeling. What you have my friend is grey plastic fatigue. ie - the feeling over being overwhelmed when you see all of those unpainted models. I have experienced this before and have managed to keep up a steady painting speed for the last six months or so, by changing a few things. My first piece of advice would be to put away a LOT of your unpainted stuff and keep it out of site. The visual disstraction is dissheartening and bad for your painitng moral. So keep out only a few things that your going to paint and when their done, leave them out as regiments, to give you something to look at and remind you what your painting for. Its inspiring to have an army grow on your desk as you paint! ![]() Secondly, remove temptation from the immediate area of your painting table. Maybe keeping your games console, out of the way and unplugged will help you stop playing the games as much. Its a mental barrier to have to go and find it and plug it all back in to the wall and tv etc, so your less likely to fall back into playing it, than if it was just there waiting. I try and just have a cd playing in the background as I paint, because any visual stimulus, like a DVD playing is disstracting. Lastly and by no means least...........join the painting vows every month and make an army diary. These things will help motivate you to paint and also the army diary will help you chart your progress and people will give you advice and encouragement as you go along. ![]() Trust me, i've done this and I SUCK and concentrating. ![]() I hope some of this helps. Just remember your doing it for the glory of the Horned Rat, the master race and the Underempire!

Don't make friends in the computer games. Seriously, when I tend to play a lot with the same people at some computer games, I can't get off the computer. About your models: hide/store them away from your direct sight. |

*laughs*... Three months? Dude, I believe I haven't painted any WH Fantasy Skaven model for the past YEAR! Having quite a bit of experience with the lack of motivation to paint (again), I know very well what you're going through. My best advice is (as with Scarfester and skavenguy13) to hide away the majority of models and start doing them bit by bit. It's not so much a point of having to paint that much models, but the 'production process' it becomes. I have had times where I painted somewhere between the twenty and thirty models a day, I have had times where I only did six bases in a single month! (Look at the November Painting Vows, I am still wondering how things could have gotten that far). For me, when starting to paint the awful lot of models, the key to keep on going is variation... Do five clanrats, pick up a stormvermin and a chieftain. Do five clanrats, pick up a ratling gun to finish. And so on. As long as you have some form of variation in your painting, it won't get that quickly boring to keep on painting. Hope this helps. Greetz |

The simple solution is to play less computer games. Its much, MUCH more rewarding to field a fully painted army than it is to complete a computer game. If your finding yourself playing more comp. games, simply limit the time you spend on such games. Set yourself a few hours per day, and after that MAKE yourself do other stuff (such as painting). Trust me, you dont want the unpainted pile to get too large. I rarely used to paint, and even after 4 years of frequent painting Im still not finished them all... - Sammy |

As others have mentioned, I feel your pain. Painting is a hit or miss thing for me. I tend to paint in spurts with long periods of time between painting. Here's one thing that helped motivate me to get painting. If you have a local tournament available, commit to attending with a painted army. My Beasts of Chaos army got painted that way. My local club committed to play in a team tourney where painted armies were expected and weighted pretty heavily in the overall scoring. I chewed through nearly 200 BoC models in a couple months. It's important to note that up to that point, they'd been sitting on my shelves bascoated with maybe 10 models painted for a couple years. Getting a couple people together who all commit to attending a tourney with painted armies can be pretty motivating. No one wants to be the guy who shows up with the unpainted army when everyone said they'd get them done. I'm considering doing something similar with my Skaven as I started playing them again in the last couple months. I have a few units painted, but the majority of the army is still unpainted. I'm gearing up for a club campaign with my beloved rats and would like to get the army painted for the campaign. I'll probably schedule myself to attend a tourney with my Skaven in early 2007 to help with the painting motivation. Food for thought. Hope it helps.

Thanks guys! This is why this forum is so great! *stores away 2000 points worth of orcs, gobbos and rats*And I agree, it's so extremely much more rewarding to have a fully painted army instead of completing a computer game. I have joined the painting vows a couple of months ago, but the last one I participated in was of no use <_< I will join next months vow though. I think ill try out that variation stuff Vinz. It gets kind of boring painting just clanrats and night gobbos all the time. Also, I may sign up for a tournament in february, to help me keep up the painting. I thank you all for your advices <<Gratwhol>> |

I have this problem over and over again. However, I have noticed that every time I stop painting for a month or so I become much better next time I pick up the brush. It's really weird. However, I think the best solution is to start doing the thing that got you into Warhammer in the first place. Because if you were motivated enough by that to drag yourself into an inescapable world of rising prices, it must be just the thing for you. |

Shares the problem with unpainted army. Games is not my problem, but I got carried away and bought (cheap) too many rats in too short time, so now they just stare at me with their black(grounded) or grey eyes. Those still in sprues at least don't stare. So ....... I will join in a january-wow too, with a little but possible goal. United we stand .....even if I stand here in the back

@Gratwhol: *grins*... Well, I have the 'luck' that I play a big amount of miniature games (almost all the Specialist Games), so I have the possibility to do that variation trick with other models as well. Trust me, going from ten clanrats to a BFG Ork kroozer all of a sudden can be quite an interesting change in painting. Hope it helps for you. Ah well, my parents are on holiday during February, so I might even join up in the 24 hrs Painting Challenge to simply do a bunch of painting in one go.Greetz |
