Well, they can, it's called "Flank Charges". :P

So what other nasty things does the Empire book have in store? Any notes on which magic items should be looked out for? For example, do they still have Van Hortsman's Speculum?

in the magic item department i know of 3. one swaps the users WS, S and A with any model in base contact with him. so stick a warrior preist with 2 hammers next to a strigoi thrall and the thrall will die lol (well it did when i did it lol).

the other i know of is the spell stealer thing, i know it's been mentioned already by me lol, but i'm pretty sure that it can do it when its not in base contact with the enemy now. least i think it did when i used it lol.

the last i know of is similar to the lizardmen diadem of power (i think thats the right name) and basicly, at the end of the magic phase you say right well i didn't use those 1, 2 or 3 dice i will keep them for later. then when the oponents magic phase rolls around you roll a dice, so long as you get over the amount of dice you kept back then you can use those dice for dispelling. quite a nice trinket, especially if you are going for defensive magic only. oh, and you can do the same thing if you have any dice left at the end of the enemys magic phase, keep the unused dispell dice and use them as power dice, working exactly the same as already said.

i didn't get to read through the magic items list myself, i was just directed to what they did by the staff guy whose book it was. however i think the spell stealer was 35 points, and is NOT one use only.

Those are all from the last edition, the first one is Van Hortsman's Speculem, but I am pretty sure it only works in challenges.

What is all your opinions on the new rocket launcher that the empire have.
Im fine with the pidgeon bombs and even the steam tank to a degree but i think the empire getting a rocket launcher is a bit over the top

@Palfy:
Rocket launcher is (according to my sources) just a fancy stone thrower, nothing more then that... I neither like the idea of them suddenly having such a jump regarding technology, but as long as the effects don't get 'boosted' in the same way, I can't really be buggered about it.

Regarding the rocket-launcher..

(hate the model+everything about it) ..

BUT, I would like people to keep in mind that rockets are not invented in the 20th century..

"First time the rockets were used was in 1232 when the Chinese were fighting the mongols in the battle at Kai Fung Fu". -From my Oh-so-dear-history-book

Sorry to say but that is pretty much at the same time as the middleages were going on.. *COUGH* Bretonnia/Empire *COUGH* .. And I believe we can agree that Bretonnians/The Empire are about the ideal "Races" of the warhammer world..

Who knows wether the Engineers took a visit to the far east^? ^_^

although according to that rockets were invented around then, i still feel that having rocket launchers are out of context with the warhammer world, and this sudden jump in technology will have to effect other races, for example clan skyre do alot of "improving" on stolen technology, so i'm afraid we will probaly have our own version of this thing :( but jsut imagine the next technology jump the empire could have, we could be fighting empire handgunners with lascannons in terminator armour ^_^

well if the chinese had rocket launchers at that time, then i guess we'll have to stop complaining about the empire using it at the same time. it does say that an engineer went to cathay, saw the fire works and decided to put his own military slant on it (or along those lines lol)

i think that we'll just have to get used to it and its rule set, i mean i guess the empire didn't like it so much when we gunned them down with our machine guns and there was next to nothing they could do about it, i mean from dirty hunched rats to rats with machine guns, well that must of been a shock to everyone back then. not to mention this thing is no more than a glorified cannon/stone thrower. what do we do with cannons and stone throwers (or all artillery for that matter) we pop tunnelers from underneath and kill it. empire crew go down like flies, this'll be no exception.

i think they could of dumbed the device down a little, but then it'd prob just be a mortor lol. the old world IS advancing, and our tactics and ideas need to advance with it.

The Mad Ratter.

They might have had Rockets but I'm pretty sure they still didn't have tanks (or the CW horse) They're not advancing THAT much, are they?

In regards to the 3 magic items you mentioned earlier, Swaping characteristics in a challenge is Van Hortsman's Specculum, Saving up to 3 dice is the Rod of Power and taking the spell is Aldred's Casket of Sorcery. All of those items were available in the 6th edition empire book. I'm suprised that Aldred's casket made it into 7th edition really, it never struck me as very useful and I've never seen any list include it...

Would making it not "one use only" make me take it? Hell no! ;)

As far as the empire having advanced technology such as the clockwork horse I'd like to direct those who can to the following pages of artwork in the collector's 7th edition rulebook. I think these works show the more extreme sides of the Empire (humanity) and what they are capable of creating.

Page 1 - Leon Brachwurster's Mechanical Menagerie amazes the inhabitants of Wolfenburg

Page 47 - Ten thousand flagellants draggin the automorial of Middenheim Delivered from the Darkness

Page 122 - The thaumodivinator of the Colleges of Magic on the eve of the Altdorb Mage Riots of 2217

Page 139 - Empror Boris's extravagant tomb barque arrives at Marienburg

While the rocket launcher sounds pretty nasty, from what I gather it will be really inaccurete and possibly have a chance to hit their own units, so maybe it isn't as bad as it seems. Here's hoping!

Well, to me the tank was already ridiculous (but I must admit I also didn't like having a laser cannon much). Now they have a grenade launcher, bomb-carrying pigeons, robots and missile defense rocket battery. And the tank is official. I really think all of those are ridiculous, but cannot help but wonder what will happen to the new skaven book :(

However, I see a good point in those new changes. With just a few of those marine shoulderplates, more tanks and engineers , empire players can now switch to 40K in a matter of weeks and have an entire army for almost nothing! Personally I hate 40K, but not every empire player does!
