Hey guys. Trying my hand at fluffwriting once again. I hope you like this piece (more will follow)

Ancient Bones

Part 1

In the time of the Great war against Chaos, there was fought many a hard battle. Such a battle was the battle of Lichenville.
Here many a proud and noble Imperial soldier met the grim forces of Chaos, led by a fierce man, known only as “The Skull taker”. The imperial army, under General Hans Upfelt, managed to beat of the malign forces after many, many days of fighting.
Neither side gave way for days, then Sigmar was with the imperial soldiers, as the greatly feared Spawns of Chaos, began to feast on their own units and the daemonic entities vaporised.

All went well for the imperial army. Many a chaos follower was killed and many beasts were slaughtered. However, disaster struck the army, as Hans Upfelt was skewered upon a spear in the midst of the Chaos rout. He was impaled by none other than Skull Taker himself.
Then all of the sudden, an arrow flew from the nearby forest and Skull Taker fell dead. To this day, no one knows who shot the arrow.

Both armies, now enraged, fought on for several days, leaving not a single man or beast alive, as the survivors succumbed to their wounds.

No one came and gave the imperial army a proper burial, nor did anyone visit this site for the next thousand years. The first man to visit, was a dreaded Necromancer, shunned by every county in the Empire and constantly chased by witch hunters, as he had dared to awaken a great many Skeletons from their graves in Altdorf.

His name is Klaruth Nightswarm. He had read about this place and had been looking for the exact location for more than a decade. He had given up a whole year before he found it, but fate intervened. One day he walked out into the fields of Lichenstadt, the former Lichenville. Here he sat down on the cold hard earth and sighed. He would never find the resting place of more than a million Chaos Warriors and imperial soldiers…

As he got up, a bony hand grabbed his leg. This was no ordinary bony hand. This was the hand of a Chaos Warrior. Klaruth knew he had found the site of one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the Empire, and he was mighty pleased.

Any good? please leave a comment :)

Sounds good ^_^ .

Is this meant as an ongoing story, or a sort of army background?

Just one tip to take in account (there wasn't really anything else I found wrong with it) :

You've used the word "many" many a time in those first few sentences ;) . Maybe it was kind of a story telling thechnique that I didn't get, but you could also try to look for some alternative words (while still saying the same thing) and check back every now and then to see if you're repeating yourself. I often try to use specific words only once if possible (twice if it's really hard to get around).

Part 2

Removing the bony hand from his leg, Klaruth got up and cheered. Now all he had to do was to wait for the cover of darkness, before he could start his ritual of summoning.
Oh how he had dreamed of this ritual. If the records were to be believed, there should be almost a million warriors hidden below the earth and if this was correct, the imperial city of Lichenstadt would be his first target.

During the day, Klaruth gathered many items needed for the ritual, but there was one thing he had to do first. He had to make sure that no one would disturb him in the most important hour; the hour of summoning. If he was disturbed, the entire army would collapse and be useless for summoning again.

He had been searching for one specific corpse, the corpse of Skull Taker, the Chosen Champion of Khorne. He knew that when he found Skull Taker, he would also find Hans Upfelt, hopefully still on the spear of Chaos.

Searching through the many magical readings he got from the ground, he was able to find this spear and also the arrow which killed Skull Taker. Digging for several hours, with his relatively weak hands, he found the tip of the spear. Digging further, he found the remains of Hans Upfelt and just below him, was the remains of Skull Taker, still in his chaotic armour.

Now all he had to do was to wait for the sun to set…

Slowly, the sun set and Klaruth enjoyed the setting sun, as he knew what was in store for him in the night. He felt happier than a follower of Slaanesh discovering a new pleasure. He had even found the perfect spot to stand. He placed himself in front of the spear and began to chant

“Awake O’ Dead, for there can be no rest for ye beneath the Earth.
Let the splintered bones burrow from the grave pall. Let cold fingers grasp timeworn blades, and unseeing eyes survey the fields of battle. For your time has come once more,
And the dead shall walk

Awake O’ Dead and claim what once was yours, arise and settle on the people that defied you in life and bring them to undeath with you, so that they forever will walk beside you and fight alongside you.

Let the living know that their time in this world is limited and let them know that their hour of doom is upon them. Arise O’ Dead and claim what belong to you and you shall find peace in the next world.

Arise O’ Dead and slaughter the living!”

The skies roared, and thunder crashed. The skies lit up as many great bolts of lighting struck the ground. Rain started pouring and the voice of Klaruth boomed across the field, almost as if his voice was the thunder and lightning.

Soon Skull Taker rose from the ground, removing the arrow from his back and grasping his heavy war axe. Around him several warriors, both imperial and chaotic, arose. Ghosts surrounded Klaruth and focused his attention on the skewered imperial General, Hans Upfelt. He was needed to ensure full control of all Klaruths new minions.

Slowly the spear gave way and the former general of the Imperial army rose up and grasped his long sword. He was ready to fight again, alongside his former enemy, Skull Taker.

Bony hands grasped rusty weapons and ancient shields. Their armour covered in dust and the effects of time, was still durable. The undead gathered in ranks, in an unholy resemblance of the imperial ranks of today.

The Warrior Priests of Sigmar arose to increase Klaruths chanting and soon the entire battlefield sounded with clatter of armour and skeletons rising from the ground. His plan had come true…
Now all that waited was the attack on Lichenstadt and the farming communities of the Empire…

Part 3

Now Klaruth saw an ominous thing on the horizon. The sun was rising and over on the hills arose several dryads and forest spirits. What forces had sent them, he knew not, but they were not to thwart his plans of destroying Lichenstadt…

His main objective was to remove the effects of the sun before it hit his army, as it would crumble faster than a lump of ice would melt in Nehekhara. Watching his surroundings, he saw that the Sorcerers of Chaos was rising from their ancient graves and was ready to serve their new master. Combining the magical abilities of the Warrior Priests, the Chaos Sorcerers and himself, heavy storms gathered and slowly began to block out the dreadful rays of the sun. His attempt had another positive effect.

The dryads and forest spirits lost much of their power as they needed the sun and thus some disappeared from the hills, while others hanged on to the flash of lighting and heavy rain that came.
Truly a great storm was rising, greater than Klaruth had imagined, or even hoped for… He only had one fear, and that was the fear of bringing too many witch hunter parties to Lichenstadt, because where there was Witch Hunters, many imperial bounty hunters and mercenaries came…

If one Witch Hunter found something to be unnatural, he would show up and many would follow, as they rarely travelled alone… This was what happened to Klaruth in Altdorf. He was found by the Witch Hunters and only survived due to a clumsy man that forgot to lock the cage door. When he fled, he made sure that this man was rewarded for his forgetfulness, as he had summoned an innocent looking animal as a familiar. The only thing wrong with this animal was that it had a tendency to slaughter the enemies of its master…

Up on the hill, the Ancient Treeman, Trequalog Barkspring, got his minions rallied and kept them in place. The entire forest around Lichenstadt had awoken at the increasing magic in the air. Trequalog knew that there was a wizard of great power and great evil in the area, hence the reason that he summoned his entire army of treemen, dryads and Treekin. His distrust for elves came at a great time, as the forest also surrounded this great evil.

Soon the entire forest came alive and Klaruth knew that his plans might be laid in ruins too early. Therefore, he ordered his reanimated Chaos Sorcerers to control the lightning and the Warrior Priests to control the summoning of fallen troops. He himself would control everything else, as he was a capable Necromancer. He controlled the swift movement of the cavalry, the swift attacks of the warriors and the accuracy of his archers. The forest would never know what hit it….

Trequalog on the other hand, was quite calm. He placed his Dryads in small grove formations and placed the bigger Treekin inside the groves. Then he placed the stubborn Treemen in groups of two, so that they could cause the most havoc. His Branch Wraiths was put into the groves as well, using the Treekin as body guards. He then placed himself in the midst of his army and ordered the advance...

Part 4.

Lightning crashed, thunder roared, and the rain stopped pouring down. Trees ran against bone and the battle had begun.
Trequalog was among the first to hit the monstrous army of the Undead and he destroyed many skeletons and received no damage as he did this, however his many groves were not so lucky…
They were struck by lightning, cut down by swords and burned by the balls of fire that were thrown by some reanimated sorcerers. Suddenly a Treekin burst into flames and ran out of the grove in a desperate attempt to save the rest of the grove, but as it left the dryads and other tree spirits, small branches and flames fell off of the Treekin and torched the ground and lit several areas aflame.

Klaruth looked on this new event with a happy face, as this rampaging Treekin had made a wall of fire that prevented the Forest to attack his left flank and he therefore gathered all his troops on the centre and right side of the battle. His archers lit their arrows and ignited many dryads and the forest was losing ground, until freak lighting struck a group of animated Chaos Sorcerers and made them into dust.
Trequalog was greatly surprised by this fortunate turn of events, as now not even the dead commanded the storm. Flashes of lighting still struck at his army, but more and more were hitting random targets instead of his army. Klaruth on the other hand, was greatly displeased as now his war host was threatened by this storm. Many skeletal regiments were reduced to dust by the thunderbolts and soon it begun to rain. His archers fire arrows went out and could no longer ignite the Treekin or Treemen and now he was in trouble. His army stood to suffer from this turn of events…

Many skeletal warriors were crushed by the Treekin and the great Treemen sent many skeletal knights flying, even the dryads broke the skeletal ranks and found their way to the first warrior priests…

Then another freak lightning struck and ignited the great Treeman, Trequalog. His army looked on in disbelief as their protector and awakener rapidly became charcoal and dust… Groves disappeared as quickly as they had come and the Treekin and branch wraiths was all that was left of the great army, as the dryads returned home to their beloved fields and stayed there. The new threat was not a thing they could defeat.
As things went brighter and brighter for the undead, Klaruth had time to rejoice and even the very heavens agreed with him, as the rain stopped and his archers could fire their arrows again and his fireballs slowly ignited the dry Treekin.

When the last of the branch wraiths gave up, she was burned alive, as a sign that no one dares to threat the forces of Klaruth Nightswarm, raiser of the greatest army since the siege of Altdorf.
Klaruth then raised his fallen troops and continued his advance on the imperial city of Lichenstadt…

Part 5

The undead advancement was undisturbed, even by the slightest ray of sunshine and soon they reached the perimeter of Lichenstadt. Here Klaruth set up several regiments of skeletal archers and ignited their arrows all at once. The first few arrows missed, due to a strong eastbound wind, but soon the first flaming arrows hit the rooftops of Lichenstadt and several buildings caught fire.
The fire spread and Klaruth wondered where all the citizens of Lichenstadt were, as no one had fled the buildings yet and no town watch or militia came to the front… Had the good people of Lichenstadt fled his oncoming advance?

Ordering his archers to stop their firing, Klaruth sent in a group of reawakened Chaos hounds and heard no commotion in the streets or in the barracks. Feeling secure, he walked into the town and still met not a single foe. Lichenstadt was deserted. His great attack plan failed and now he had a large army, that he had no idea what to use to…
Walking further ahead, he heard a scuttling sound in the distance. Quickly gathering a large quantity of his army, he advanced.
Klaruth ordered the rest of his troops to burn the city to the ground and should they find something alive, nothing was to be spared.

Searching through the scrubs and undergrowth, he found a lowly peasant cowering and hiding from the might of Klaruth.

The peasant revealed everything. The mighty storm that Klaruth had conjured had sent the townsfolk fleeing and the Witch hunters had gathered in large numbers in the surrounding area, searching for the source of this unnatural storm. When Klaruth heard that the witch hunters were in the area, he freaked out.
Lining up his troops, as he always did, he slowly began to advance towards the hills on the other side of Lichenstadt, where the peasant had told him that the Witch hunters had gathered.

Little did he know that the peasant was not a peasant but a very well trained Witch hunter that had guided him into a trap. Soon Klaruth stood at the hillside and noticed that the area was empty, not a single man walked this area and the beasts of the area were happily eating, leaving nothing that could even resemble an incoming attack or last stand…

Getting ready to turn his army around, Klaruth heard a snap in the nearby forest. A creature in the wood had broken a branch and remembering what the peasant had said, and remembering the battle against Trequalog, he ordered his archers to fire their arrows towards the forest and soon the first squeals of pain were heard. Thinking that it was over now, Klaruth advanced to the forest and scoured the area for anything that did not belong there.

After finding nothing of interest, he left the forest and took the army with him. Then suddenly there were the sound of cannons and rifles…
