Part 3 of 4! Part I is can be read here. Part II is here! One week ago Chieftain Gnawpelt of Clan Virulus gazed upon the figures before him with an equal mixture of satisfaction and puzzlement. Hundreds upon hundreds of Skaven passed him by, heading into the large catacombs of the Ulricsberg mountain. Long lines of shackled slaves, whips from their masters flicking around their legs and tails; columns of Clanrats pulling carts and carrying sacks containing their possessions and equipment. Over there were dozens of Rat Ogres, growling and snapping at the Giant rat swarms than scurried between their legs, all carefully driven by numerous Pack Masters. Jezzail teams rubbed shoulders with Ratling Gunner crews, whilst Warpfire teams were unsurprisingly isolated far behind. Needless to say, the globadiers found themselves devoid of company too. Plague Monks and Censor Bearers chanted and screeched their devotions to the Horned one; Gutter Runners slipped by in the shadows, their numbers impossible to determine. Cordoning off the entire force to discourage stragglers and deserters were line upon line of hulking Stormvermin, their heavy armour providing an incessant metallic creak to accompany the huge procession. And there, right in the middle of it all, Clan Virulus’s very own Screaming Bell was pulled forward by sweating Clanrats. Gnawpelt’s own heart filled with pride as the icon of Skavendom passed by. There were two Warp Lightning cannons before it and three behind, an awe inspiring convoy of destructive power. The only rats conspicuous by their absence were the Clan’s Warlock Engineers. Every single one of them had been summoned to the Ulricsberg two months ago and had not been seen or heard of since. The reason for Gnawpelt’s satisfaction was that he had successfully organised and led this mass of vermin from their city at Black Chasm to the Ulricsberg mountain without having once had to engage the armies of Brass Keep which even now advanced deep into Claws of the Horned One territory. Breaking onto the surface when necessary, the Virulus Chieftain had expertly dodged the vanguards of the Children of the Warp as they focussed their efforts on Black Chasm and the Claw’s breeding pit beyond it. Gnawpelt grinned to himself. He wished he could have seen the faces of those invading rats when they reached a deserted city and emptied Breeding warrens. He knew that the resourceful Father Squee had already made plans to cut off the over extended Children, and wondered if the mobilisation of Clan Virulus was part of this elaborate plot. But this is where Gnawpelt’s puzzlement surfaced. The idea of wholly evacuating Black Chasm just to lure in a single army of Brass Keep’s for destruction did not quite feel right. And the orders to evacuate to the Ulricsberg had come directly from Grey Seer Skritchit himself, not the Council chamber of the Claws. Skritchit had been ensconced deep within the mountain for an age now, seemingly unconcerned with the grim war for survival against the Children of the Warp. In fact, he had as good as handed over the Lordship of the mountain to Warlord Wynnar. On the face of it this appeared a suicidal move. But Gnawpelt knew the Seer better than perhaps any other living rat, and he just knew that there was far more to this than met the eye. The winged rat’s eyes swept over the mass before him again, and he summoned a runner to seek out Grey Seer Skritchit for new instructions. It had taken a number of days, but they were at last here. For the first time since the Storm of Chaos the whole of Clan Virulus was once more at the Ulricsberg….. |
