...you can still call me Rusty Tincanne if you want, though.

I am in the midst of painting up some giant rats and plague monks (last months vows) and keep coming upon the problem of how to best paint their boils. Thusfar I've just been painting them the same as the rest of the flesh and was thinking to use red ink on them to finish them off. I'm not sure that'll work, though. How do you all achieve the look of a nice, irritated infection?

I'm using the color schem from the back of the Lustria book, if that matters any.

Many thanks.

I use rotting flesh with a green andbrown ink wash looks suitably pussy an yet is easy and fast to do.

Never worry. Worst case scenario you die, and then there was no point worrying anyways.

Hmmm... Thats a nice idea for oozy ones. I hadn't thought of that sort. Thanks a lot. I'll try it out on a few models.

I am still looking for tips on red and irritated boils, though.

ah boils, my speciality :P

so you paint it up just normal. then you go over it with dwarf flesh and then some red ink. now paint a diluted white or kommando khaki over the boil and you are set. easy, but a great result, it looks like its about to pop :P

This isn't direct painting advice per se, but here goes . . .

When our last rat died, my girlfriend and I had to simply watch in horror as all her strength was sapped away by an enormous growth on her side. It was pretty sad . . .

The thing that struck me the most about it were the clearly visible veins/arteries on the boil. You might want to lay down some flesh, followed by some (tiny) squiggles of blue or red to represent them, followed by some mixed white/flesh wash on top of it all to bring them close to the surface of the skin. And don't forget, they pop open and bleed once they've been rubbed up against often enough - it's disgusting, but a rat will lap up blood out of the opened wound like a kitten under a cow udder. Google some rat owner sites and you should find some pix for reference.

You know, Rusty, I'm not sure that helped at all. Sad now. :( Sorry 'bout all that.

@ Mallekha:
Thanks. I've been painting them teh same, thusfar, so I'm mostly on teh right track. I'll see if I can't make your recipe work for me, too.

@ Clayflesh:
Sorry about your girlfriend's rat. Wow. That was graphic. If it wasn't real life it wouldn't be disturbing at all. I guess that is the oddest thing about wargames in general is the detachment. War is a really sick thing. Thinking of new, more effective ways of ending life - or at least incapacitating it. Really not what I'm into. It's disturbing to me. (As is this hobby of mine, which is why I am continually at odds with it - though it is fun.) My girlfriend's cat just died of kidney failure last month and I watched her slowly lose the ability to function normally. Suffering is the most painful thing we can bear witness to, I think.

I'll try adding veins to Mallekhas instructions. At least on the larger boils, such as those on the Rat Ogres.

Thanks for sharing all that. Sorry about your loss.

Well I wanted a look of pus. So for my boils I do first a vermin brown not only on the boil itself but a also a tiny ring around it. Then I do a scab red and after that I paint orange at the top of the boil. On some of them Iīve added a small dot of yellow (dull not to bright) at the higest point.
I think itīs good, it looks infected with pus.

Nice! You got the shine just right on the boil - like when it's just about to pop. You were right about the yellow highlight not being too bright, as the pus is still beneath the surface of the skin. Good work!

Rusty - Sorry to hear about any kitty in pain. I'm just now learning about them firsthand with my first cat (girlfriend's tomcat) and they're okay in my book of non-grudges - even if every one of them is royalty.
