in need of some cheap fast buildings for that battle tomorrow? I was *stupid mordheim* but then I got a genious idea and built half a dozen buildings in a couple hours. They're not detailed, they're not perfect, but they work and they don't look half bad. materials required ![]() -several cereal boxes or other thin cardboard boxes -masking tape -scissors -a box cutter, exactoknife, or straight razor it's pretty straightforward. Start by cutting the bottom of the box off at about 6-8". this will give you enough height for a two-storey building, you can cut the height down to the desired height ![]() now that you have something that can be worked with, use scissors and the box cutter to give shape to your building. Most buildings look best if assembled in two or three pieces, so then all your buildings don't come out looking like, well, cereal box bottoms. tape any seams with the masking tape so there are no random gaps in the buildings' floors, walls, etc. ![]() ![]() when you're happy with the shape, size, and layout of the building it's time to cut out the windows and doors. An exactoknife, straight razor, or box cutter works infinetely better than scissors. To make opening doors, simly cut away three sides of a rectangle and leave the fourth side attached, then bend. ![]() ![]() be sure to use bits of masking tape to line the inside edges of windows and doorframes, as well as the outside edges of doors and the crease where the door attatches to the wall. This helps prevent rips due to wear and tear and also makes them look more 'finished', not just a hole cut out of a wall. theres no harm in taping all the edges on the building, but that's pretty time-consuming and not really worth it on small pieces like these. ![]() put the building together, again taping any seams where the cardboard overlaps or meets. now you can add whatever else you want - balconies, debris, ladders, pub signs, anything you want! cardboard is pretty versatile stuff, so go wild. ruined rooftops, ramps, whatever your little ratlike heart desires. ![]() ![]() you don't have to make generic buildings like this - try to make something unique. Taverns, ruined churches, and inns are great for this kind of terrain. Try making multi-storey buildings by taping pieces of carboard in as second floors and roofs. Use balsa wood or matchsticks with the heads removed to make ladders. ![]() ![]() ![]() You can pump out these buildings pretty quickly once you get started, in a couple hours I came up with half a dozen buildings, one of them a large two-storey inn! check it out and good luck in your building (hey look a pun) endeavors -Sings ![]()

Ahh, this brings out some memories. Cereal boxes are amazing! I've also made some little houses some time ago (last year). http://s20.photobucket.com/albums/b221/Baraduribagugar/ I call teh tavern 'the humping skaven' (humping? whatever...)

not in mordeim, in any case. I had a bunch of older ones (a smithy, a tavern, and a couple houses) that were pretty good but I lost them with my wood elf army (along with like $30 of trees) |

Acutally it's fairly tough to pain masking tape; coloured markers work though Ya know, I think this is the first terrain guide I've ever seen on this site! Good Job! |

I'll try painting them in a couple different ways over the week and tell you guys what works best and now that I think about it, there haven't been many terrain-based threads at all, let alone a terrain-building one. oh well, it's about time |

sorry for the lack of updates spraypainting went well, I used just the stuff I had lying around which dries to a slightly glossy finish. the cardboard stood up well enough, didnt get soggy or warped or anything like that. I'll post pics when I get the chance and continue the workshop. |
