You might be familiar with the rat, but the Dwarf is new :)
The pictures are a bit out of focus, as Milo's camera got broke again - bad service, as he says, but still better than mine :)

If you click on the pics, you'll be able to see more photos. Not cheating anyone, these are eBay links - mostly because Milo, the photographer, is quite sensitive about his work - it's his prime job after all - so he's not quite happy if someone posts his pictures for other reasons than to advertise the auctions (But I wouldn't be honest if I did not add that I also count on some bids ;) ). This is also the reason why I did not edit the photos, but trust me, some sharpening in any graphical tool helps it :)

Comments on the minis appreciated, especially constructive criticism :)

Very nice ^_^ The paint on the beard seem a bit thick or maybe it's just me.
Cheers

As a dwarf player, I can certainly say that the lord mini you've done is very nice, but......it looks like youve done a dipping step and i justy dont like it!
No offence meant, but he looks shiny and a dwarf lord should look dirty and tough, especialy if he has an ironbreaker helmet!

I think a more 'gradual' shading to the models skin tones would give the model a much better look.
Please dont take this as bad criticism, because its better then anything ive done so far. :P
Im a perfectionist when it comes to dwarves and will hopefully be going for a best army prize at a UK GT in a few years time! (insert manic laugther and much mocking laugther from people around me! :( )

You have my envy sir and I hope to see more of your work in the future! ^_^

No offence taken :)
The shiney stuff is called Varnish, I care about the minis I sell ;) As I wanted the armour to be shiny, I used a glossy varnish on metals, half-glossy on the other parts and sprayed it with matt varnish. Still, some gloss always remains :(

Getting a Best Army award is not as hard as it sounds and if you're aiming at this award there are a couple tips I can give if you wish :) (got the award in the Eastern Europe GT 2005 for my rats, was a painting referee on the Eastern Europe GT 2004, and I'm rather known for being able to paint nice armies than to paint great single minis).

Cool. I can certainly see the varnish and it certainly makes sense for transprting mini's your going to sell.

Thanks for the offer. Any advice you could give me on a best army award at a GT would be vastly appreciated. ^_^
I've always fancied a go at that. I wouldnt be there to game competatively.

All right.

I guess you know the basic stuff (paint the army as good as you can ;) ), so I'll concentrate on less obvious tips.

First of all, you have to decide which of the usual painting awards given away on the GTs you prefer: Players' Choice or Best Army.

If it's the former, concentrate on "cool", easily noticable stuff. Vast conversions, a good centerpiece, striking colour scheme etc. The technique itself is less relevant, but still important.

If you want Best Army, it's the painting skill that matters more.

In both cases:
Bear in mind that people judging youw work might not, but probably will be tired. I do a lot of hobby refereeing on various local tourneys and let me tell you, it's hard work. Work under assumption that your work will be judged by someone who will be tired of all this stuff.

You need a conistent colour sceme, one that is faithful to colour theor (so no pink and yellow all over ;) ). The shadeing should be obvious - you might not carry it as far as I do (from almmost black to almost white usually), but the refereee has to be able to tell at the first sight that it's the army he wants to look closer at, because it's worth it, no matter if he's tired or not.

After you got the referee's attention, you can start showing him youw work. Don't be too modest, but don't be rude (i.e. don't press the ref to look at THAT MODEL NOW!).

The technique should be consistent througout the wholle army - i.e. don't think like: this throwaway unit of 10 warriors is rushed, but those Hammerers deserve the best I can do. Keep the same standard all over the Rank and File, maybe doing some more work on the command models. Expose your heroes - put them on rocky bases or smething, and do your best paint and conversion jobs on them. Speaking of conversions, you should aim for the wholle army being converted - keep it simple, but still do it. Stuff like shield straps out of Greenstuff are easy and cause respect to the fact that you actually bothered. Try not to have 2 identical minis in any regiment - plastic kits give you a lot of variation possibillities, metals should differ at least slightly (differen axe for every Ironbreaker etc).

Put some work on your bases. Good bases can really make the army look way better.

Finally - check Kubasa's gallery on CMON for inspiration - he's a fellow painter from Poland and has a lot of ideas concerning his Dwarves :)

That's all I can think of at the moment, but maybe I'll come up with more tips :)

Thanks Swingu. Those are some great tips there! Well thought out, especialy the bit about the ref's being tired.
I'd expected as much, but its good to hear clarification from one that knows. ^_^

I'd probably head for the players choice award, but still try and maintain a really high level of conversions and painting. Could take a few years with all the projects i've got on the go at the moment! <_<

I've seen Kubasa's stuff before, over at Bugmans. Simply amazing painting and converting skills. He has my envy!

Do you have any suggestions for centre pieces?
Thats the one area where I find it hard to come up with ideas.

Dwarfs suffer from the same problem that Skaven do - flat army with nothing big. You have to improvise then. A big gyrocopter maybe? An Anvil on an elevated base? Some fillers in the units, i.e. a Dwarf equivalent of aa rat-ogre stuck in the clanrat regiment to make it less flat? No idea, this might be a gold filled cart or something...

Improvise :)
