Welcome to A-con. Like acorn but not quite! ^_^ (spot the reference)

Im looking for a bit of advice.

Im a bit of an anime fan and have been wanting to get some new stuff to watch.
At the moment I seem to be lumbered with insomnia and reading for six hours a night in bed, gets a little boring after a while.
Basicaly I am looking for peoples recomendations on what anime's to look for next. I like animes that make me think and are not too discusting and gory. I dont mind it being cutesy, but not too much! :P

So far ive watched and liked Akira, Ghost in the shell, 3x3 eyes, ninja scroll and the entire neon genesis evangeleon series and movie (love this one) ^_^

I'd like a bit more of the same and I find it incredibly difficult to pick out anime's when in a shop, as they all look so similar in some ways. If there are any anime fans out there that could help me, i'd be vastly grateful.

If you suggest a movies, or series please explain your choice. Dont put 'cause its totaly awesome dude' or anything similar.

Thanks for reading and I hope you can help me save my sanity!

Domo arigato gozaimasu (thank you very much in Japanese) ^_^

well one possible option is the .hack series it has some pretty good indepth characters and is about a game that ceases to be a game in a way anycase skavenguy13 liked it i like it and i think bas is pretty fond to it to

i wouldve reccomended elfen leid by far the best anime ive seen as it seriously toys with your amotions and at points you can feel what the characters feel but the gore level is very high at minimum
Shhhh I'm not here

I second Elfen Lied. Best 13 episodes I have ever seen. You do need a strong stumach, tough.

And .hack/slash had very good character building.
Ah! My Goddess! had nice bits, was funny at most points, romantic at others, but the last few episodes just plain sucked.

If you like cute without too much gore, one of the best series I can reccomend is Project A-Ko. I only know of the first three, but now there's bound to be more by now. They center around a girl with super powers who is (ostensibly) Superman's daughter - there's a short gag near the end of the first movie which depicts her parents as looking eerily similar to Lois Lane & Clark Kent.
There's one other - Riding Bean, a sort of take on 'The Transporter', about a guy who drives a getaway car for a living in Chicago. There's a nice police car pile-up scene lifted pretty much straight out of the Blues Brothers, too - but it's a nice tribute at the same time.
Sure wish I still had my tapes . . . :( . . . I haven't seen them for some time.
I don't torture - I prod with enthusiasm!

I used to be schizophrenic, BUT WE'RE OKAY NOW!

Anime, anime, anime!

Yeah!

As for suggestion:
It depends on what kind of anime hit your spot...

One of the anime that made me think, and so far the only one who successed to get me to tear up (yeah, I know, I'm just soft inside...) is
Saikano/Saishuuheiki Kanojo/She, Ultimate weapon. The title change depending of your home country... Some really touchy moment, a good drama background, a decent animation technique...

Elfen Lied is, as stated, a must see...

If you're into mecha, like your Evangelion theme may suggest, try to get your hands on the "Full Metal Panic" first serie... A good all around serie with not so shallow characters... And if you like it, there's 2 follow-up series, but you can step over the second which is just a bunch of fill-up before the third series and not even completely related to the storyline..

Another anime worthy of mention would be Shingetsutan Tsukihime (spl?) A very good storyline, and I'd love to see a follow-up on that one... maybe to thoughen the background of the character even more... This one had a feel similar to Elfen Lied to me...

And for those "Kawaii overload lovers", Onegai Teacher... Mizuho is just too damn sexay!... I've always wanted a teacher like that... Too bad, I never had one...

Yeah.. Well after this post, everybody knows that I listen to too much anime... ^_^
Now, If you'd excuse me, this anime freak just got his hand on the latest Blood+ episode and the compulsion is getting strong... I need my fix...

Well theres Record of Lodoss War, which is pretty high rated (plus it has cute cartoons at the end of every episode ^_^ ), and then theres Trigun; a little bloody but a great story.
Cowboy Bebob is a must see! There isn't much of a 'soap opera' plot line but that just leaves it open for more fun and the animation (especialy in the movie) is unbalivable. Outlaw Star is another captivating futuristic one that I consider a must see also.
Then ofcourse theirs The Last Exile; it's fairly new so the animations great and the story (as far as I can tell, still working through it) follows a good path.

Whatever you do though, avoid X the anime, it's just god awful! (Which sucks because it's the only one that my video store has the complete series of <_< )

My vote would also got for .hack//sign. The music are incredible, I loved the story but I must say you won't get a lot of fast paced action.

Gundam seed also his a nice serie, my favorite gundam serie. There usually his an alternance between fighing scene and plot moments. Character are classic but well done.

Inuyasha his your classic anime, part figthing, a bit of a love story, angry girl, etc. The classic drill with classic animation.

My vote still go for .hack//sign, the serie continue itself in a manga and a ps2 game. The anime his a story in itself but only the story about tsuakaza, for the rest of the serie concentrate itself on the "world" storyline.
I have a few bare metal dark elf model for sale, if interested pm me.

Elfen Lied is EXTREMELY gory. As in happily decapitating and ripping limbs off people on screen. It also seems to have a fair bit of full frontal nudity, although not in a sexual way, so if you don't like that, don't watch it. It's definitely not for everyone.

Insofar as .hack// is, the main story is supposed to be in the series of PS2 games, of which there are four. .hack//sign is more of an opener, although it does introduce some characters and the final boss of the first game (who is harder than the final boss of the second). There's also something I know as .hack//dust, but seems to be officially named Legend of the Twilight Bracelet, set a few years after the various events in the games, and is a lot less serious. If you're still interested, there's a new serious coming out I think next season, April, called .hack//roots, or something to that effect. In any case, .hack//sign is probably an art show, along the lines of (and made by the same people as) Noir and Madlax. You story isn't necessarily very good, but there is good art, and the music, as you should expect from Kajiura Yuki, is superb.

Incidentally, the aforementioned Gundam SEED also has its music done by Kajiura Yuki. Personally, I detest Kira and Athrun, the two biggest characters, and I don't think that SEED was all that good. However, it did end very well, with a six episode final battle. I much prefered Gundam SEED Destiny, set two years later, but it started better than it ended.

Shingetsutan Tsukihime is really quite good, and I was really disappointed when I found out that it was only a twelve or thirteen episode series. It actually started out from a computer 'game' of the same name, although it is probably more like a choose your own adventure book. There's also something called 'Melty Blood', a fighting game with the characters in it. Type Moon, the people who made the game (I'm not sure about Melty Blood) have also made Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Hollow Ataraxia games, and there is currently a series of Fate/Stay Night airing in Japan. Very good.

Strictly speaking, lumping Eva into the same category as Full Metal Panic is probably not such a good idea, because they are considerably different. Evangelion is a lot closer to something like RahXephon, and I believe actually managed to spawn its own genre. Full Metal Panic, on the other hand, was originally based on a series of books, then made into manga, and finally anime. It's really good, and there are two more series of it after the first: Full Metal Panic Fumoffu?! and Full Metal Panic The Second Raid, which only recently finished airing in Japan. These other series are not made by Gonzo, the production house that made the first series, but by Kyoto Animation, and I have to say I think they are actually better. There's something for everyone in this series, except people who are obsessed with not being able to predict it.

Onegai Teacher is pretty good, but honestly I think the next series, Onegai Twins, is better. The first had some rather unnecessary elements in it that weren't present in Twins. But both of them are quite good, if the romance/drama/comedy thing is for you.

For some suggestions of my own, I'd have to say, to this day, Azumanga Daioh is one of my favourite series. It was one of the very first I saw, and it had a big impact on how I thought of anime. It's basically a slice of life comedy show, about a bunch of high school girls going through life with some rather amusing situations in it.

Hellsing is something else you might like to get your hands on. It has lots of style, and is something most people of this demographic (the people that typically visit this site) will enjoy. The original series was made by Gonzo, but there's also an OVA coming out made by Satelight. Hellsing was made from a manga, so the series and the OVA cover a lot of the same ground, although with different interpretations.

Gungrave is really good. It basically takes you through the life of a couple of young punks who turn into hardcore mafiosos. It was made off a game, though, and there are some parts of it that it would probably be better off without, except the game kind of forced it on them. That said, I played the game long before the series came out, and I can kind of understand what they had to do. But, more than anything, it's really worth watching.

Full Metal Alchemist is a really good show. It would be a crime to try to categorise it. It has a plot with so many twists that you never know what's about to happen next. It has some riotously funny parts, and at the same time also has some extremely sad ones. My words are inadequate to describe this masterpiece.

I have watched dozens, and perhaps hundreds of other series. These are just a tiny number of them. Almost all of them are worth watching. I personally think it's very hard to go wrong, but then some people have much more specific tastes than me.

And, for the love of all things good and holy, watch subs, not dubs. Quite disregarding the atrocious translations of most of the professionals, the American voice actors are truly pathetic when you put them up against the seiyuu. Seiyuu is the Japanese word for voice actors, and those people are quite willing to say, scream or shriek the most outrageous things. I find that the American voice actors are really quite flat in their emotional state, and are generally bad.

@ Rage: I'm really holding out for another Fate/Stay Night. Blood+ really doesn't do it for me.

Thanks all for your lengthy and well written out replies. Im much indebted to you all and extremely grateful.

It looks like i'll have a look at Elfen Lied (i dont mind the gore too much) and possibly hack//sign as well. Seems popular anyway and I know the stores near me stock it!
I'll also probably have a look at onegai teacher and full metal alchemist, as I like a bit of comedy every now and again. :)

Madthing - If I can get the DVD's with a Japanese, subtitled option I will. I love the language and agree with you that the voice actors are amazing.

Warlord Rageaganish - Be proud of your addiction. Its not an affliction, but a badge of honour! ^_^

MUTATE - I also like Japanese films and wouldnt mind some suggestions on others to watch.
Im a big fan of Battle Royal and Battle Royal 2: Requiem. The use if music in that film is just breathtaking.

Ive also watched Azumi and Azumi 2. Pretty good and a cute chick slaughtering 200 enemies in five minutes is always fun. ^_^
Of course no film will ever beat the seven samurai for japanes sword swinging action!

anime: Elfen Lied.
reason: just watch it man.

i have seen the first battle royal. fairly enjoyable at some parts but yet at others like the couples hanging together and jumping of cliffs i could not get the image of me being on the island with my girl. i would be fine without my girl but with her the thought just made me really quite sad. i know kind of taking it to far but i was ill and i believe i had quite an emotional time with her the night prevously.

Yes, battle royal is an exellent social comentary. Sort of sums up the human minds reaction to a life or death situation, from all concievable angles.
Plus it has Beat Takeshi in it and he's an awesome actor! :)

The first time I saw it, I had got in from the pub at 2am, absolutely hammered and I saw the second half of the film. I think my exact words were 'What the £$%?'
I got the DVD about a year later and was just stunned by the piece of work.

Battle Royal 2 seems to get a bit of critisism from fans on the first. I think its a great film and its just the fan boys/girls trying to cling to the original.
The second film is so good for many reasons. Firstly it tackles an extremely controversial subject (terrorism) head on. The musical score in the film is just magnificent. Its used in a very provocative manner.
The acting is almost world class ans the main character really has worked hard for the role I think. The speeches he gives are delivered with great intensity.
The only weak bit of acting came from the teacher I thought. But that was still pretty good.

Well worth the watch. ^_^

I'll definately be picking up Elfen Lied I think.
Seems everyone loves it.
I know the first DVD came out not long ago!

@ Madthing

My categorizing of FMP with Eva was based on 2 caracteristics: The Mecha and the Caracter depth, in no way does those 2 compare in any other way :P As you stated, Eva launched his own genre, of which RahXephon, Argento Soma, and the late boring Aquarion have spawned... I stick with the original as the referance...

And just like you, I'm anxiously waiting for that Fate/Stay Night episode...
Blood+ is just there to fill the gap between release... ;)

@Scarfester
Another good serie that I forgot to mention would be Gunslinger Girls.
The animation is flawless, the plotline entertaining... Quite a good show of a few years ago... Of course, violence bonanza... Not for somebody looking for a "politically correct" anime...

Battle Royale is quite entertaining, that's a given but I'd rather take an anime version of it... ;)

The reasons I got into and enjoyed the Eva series was down to the characters, not the mechs. Im not that interested in those to be honest.
Some of the characters I hated at the start, like Misato, but her personality really endeared her to me in the end. The plot and twists were good and well written and directed. I like it when a show has been put together well. :)

Rage - I'll consider the gunslinger girls as well then. Dont worry, im not a fan of political correctness. ;)
Also, I think there was an animated movie of Battle royal. I may be wrong though. I know there was a manga for it at least!

ghost in shell, eva and akira are pretty much the top of their neotokyo-cyberpunk subgenre. Out of curiosity, does anyone know any other movies of that style that are about as good, coz i can't seem to think of any. Which is odd, since they're everywhere.

The Samurai X ova is pretty damn good, its the backstory for kenshin rurouni. FLCL is also one to look out for, it's just... really strange.
