i'd be willing to bet most army's magic items break down close to this:

55% of the items are never used either because what it does is silly/pointless (rust armor), not worth the cost (blade of nurglitch), or it's not silly/pointless nor overpriced but there are other items with more value and only so many points/characters to carry them (ring of darkness).

10% of the items are always taken because they are indispensible (dispel scroll), both cool and effective (weeping blade), are a superb value (warpstone amulet), or cheap enough to fill out the points allotment (warpstone token).

which leaves ~25% as being taken in various situation specific battles.

regardless of how far off my estimates are, i'd like to see more generic items in the 5 to 15 point range.

some ideas:

potion of strength (5): used at the beginning of combat; adds +1 S for that combat only

amulet of courage (10): gives +1 to Ld on tests for fear, terror, and panic

boots of speed (5): +1 M, +2 I; bipedal models on foot only

vial of poison (5): used at the beginning of combat; may be applied to a non-magic hand weapon; all wounds caused that combat phase will do d3 wounds.

if you meet a master swordsman, show him your sword; but do not show your poem to one who is not a poet.

maybe instead of every hit, the d3 only applies to the first hit then is gone.

looking at the existing items, they're mostly 25 or 50 points to nicely fill out a character's allotment. those that aren't are what tick me off in the absence of more >20 point items.

4th & 5th had pretty much all items as "generic", in that any race could take any magic item with few exceptions. while it was odd giving the Blade of Leaping Gold to a plague priest, hardly any characters would be expected to have the same kit as another or in different games. as it is now, 75% [no data to back this % up, just a guess] of a particular character type are equipped exactly the same as another. to me this is boring.

Well if you think about it, those rules kinda make sense. After a battle, it's pretty common for most armies to begin looting the corpses, and no matter what race you are, you're not gonna let a magic item be left forgotten in some prissy elfs hand, or some dead warlords gauntlet. It's just not right.
