well, they're less efficient than handweapon and shield most of the time, but they have uses. The general thing I do and I've seen referred to by others is to take one unit of spears for every 2 with HW&S. A good mixture and lets you have a tiny bit of variety between the units.

wow... thats exactly what Ive got!!

There has been many posts and debates on this, and the general jist of it all is that for the first unit or 2 hand weapons are best. Only when you start getting a larger army worry about spears... They do look cool but their usefullness is limited...

Do we like spears? Nooooooooooooooooo.... B)

Although many make use of spears in their army, I've never (EVER) found a use for them in mine. The reason why I stopped using them, is mainly due to the fact that noone wishes to charge me. When getting near to a skaven army, people get all upset about weapon teams and hidden assassins, which usually throws the ball back into my court where I have to be the one doing the running towards the side of my opponent. As such, I always make use of hw/shield instead of spears. Better save in combat, 'nuff said!

All three of my 30 rat units have spears. Their usefulness has been limited.

More often than not, I charge my opponent. However, combat usually lasts more than one turn, so my second rank gets to attack then. I like the ability of being able to choose which weapon I'll use each combat. The spears give me an edge if I'm charged but the extra save comes in handy if I need my CR to survive longer.

I think the suggestion of two CR w/hw for every spear toting unit is a good one, especially for someone starting a Skaven army. The spears are a points sink and there very well might be other stuff you want to spend them on. In fact, I am thinking about switching out one of my units' spears to free up 30 pts. Watch, I'll probably end up swapping two units' spears if I don't notice much difference in effectiveness with the first unit.

If people don't want to charge your skaven, they must like being shot by weapon teams. (which you should be concerned about if you don't charge, not the other way around... they can't stand and shoot and when blasting into combat you'll suffer only half the casualties.) Especially as most races are better than us at the close and dirty work.

Anyway, even though spears are worse than handweapons and I advice people not to use them too much, my own army is chock full of spears. Why? They look so much better than handweapons... (and they were the better choice in fifth edition, when they cost half a point each and handweapons didn't give a bonus save.)

But we've been through this discussion two dozen times since the site was founded, I do not doubt. Let me see if I can't find a link to a recent thread...
"I have a post-Armageddon vision. We and all other large animals are gone. Rodents emerge as the ultimate post-human scavengers. They gnaw their way through New York, London and Tokyo... within 5 million years, a whole range of new species replace the ones we know. Herds of giant grazing rats are stalked by sabre-toothed predatory rats. Given enough time, will a species of intelligent, cultivated rats emerge?"

There's one.

And I don't like spears.

Quiet, I'm plotting.

I have no spear wielding Clanrats in my army. Hand weapons all the way. When the CRs get into combat, I love that the core unit if the skaven army has a 4+ save. Especially against the friend who fields High Elves, my opponents resent and respect the might of the 25 strong Clanrat regiment with handweapons and shields.
