if you are going to use storm vermion i would give them shields because then in close combat you have a 3+ save insted of a 5+ and for such an expensive unit survive ability is very importiant and if your going up ajanst a army that likes shooting a 4+ helps a lot and halberds have never proven there points with me |

I field mine with shields. however, I am big on having options in combat. Sometimes it is more prudent to have a 3+ save than S4. Plus, the shileds are always useful against missile fire. If facing a shooty army, I also give them the Umbranner for added protection as my Warlord normally leads them. |

your wisdom is well seen. and i have decided to go for it. but, how would you guys go about putting shields on the models? on their lower arms?, upper arms?, which arm?, ect. |

I put mine on the lower arm. i think if it was on the other one it would interfer with the model in front of it

I think if you put it on the forward arm, it'll look cooler, like it's raised in defence. Doesn't seem like it'll cause much trouble with ranking, depending on what you're planning to use as a shield. You could really just do the first rank, that'll get the idea across, save gluing on more shields, and it wouldn't interfere with ranking. The clannie shield's will be a tad small, maybe you could look into getting the nightrunner sprue triangle shields. As for on-topic, yeah, s/hw does well for stormvermin, if your warlord is in them, you'd want a unit that survives better, and the warlord can handle his own end of the fighting well enough to forgo that +1 S. |

I've seen units of stormvermin that have shields attached to their arms for the first rank and the rest of the other tanks have them on their backs. |

Once I finish painting all of mine, their shields will go on their backs. I'm using the standard CR shields, though the NR ones would look cooler. However, the CR shields were easier to obtain. |

i would think on there backs would be easiest and look good because with them holding their halberds, which should not be with a shield, it looks more seperate. this would give the feel that the stormvermin would have to sling his halberd and unsling his shield keeping it more fluffy it also looks better from an if they were marching aspect. <-------yay cheftian post. i missed my stormvermin post. i was counting down then forgot, went on a posting spree and then when i next looked i was a stormvermin but not this time. this time i remembered. Well considering I use mine as cannon fodder, yes I do because it gives them a bit of increased longevity. But it's all up to style. I personally use them either as cannon fodder (with shields) or as a hammer type unit (no shields) but I tend to find that people shoot them long before they can do anything. Basically: If you're facing missile heavy armies and want to keep them; yes take 'em. If you're up against O+G for example, don't bother. For random opponents, I agree with Gnashik as it's always best to have options. Just remember that the a unit of 10 stormvermin with shields could pay for a unit of naked sotrmvermin and half a unit of slaves. |

i usually play empire, og and he so i definitely take shields for versatility i havent worked it out yet, but my intuition is the hw+s works better against, say, empire swordsmen, than the halberd mutate: now that i think about it, who gets the charge really matters here against O&G, i would use halberds on the charge just to try and take down a whole ogre and thats -4 attacks right away.. if i got charged i would definitely take the hw+s (p.s. do ironguts get the exta -1sv for ogre clubs??), in order to reduce casualties and have a chance of getting some attacks in. bulls are -2 to the armour save (strength, bull clubs AP 1) |

I'm definitely going to invest in shields for my SV. Lately I've been waging war agains Dark Elves and 3+ save is much better than st4. Many times some puny elves beat my elite in a prolonged combat. I have loads of the old plastic clanrats I'm not using and they have good looking shields. I'm going to use them and put them on the backs of my SV. |
