Help with an assassin; delete if annoying anyone

Hi guys,

First of all I'm not an idiot and I'm certain this is not an original topic so if it's annoying any mods delete it straight away. ;) However the search function isn't working at the moment and I'd like to know a bit about this as I may go out and make some purchases based on it.

I'm starting my first proper army ( I had 1000pts empire to learn the game, the skaven list is posted too if you have some time to help), and I'd really like to take an assassin. I've noticed that they don't seem to be too popular. At first glance they do seem extremely expensive for an unarmoured unit with 2 wounds, however these chaps are one of the many things which attracted me to the skaven, so I'd really like to use one if possible
.
So, I suppose I'd like to know if any of you experienced players think they're any use.

My 2 main opponents are calvalry heavy Brets and High Elves, so I don't know if he'll just get turned into a kebab. Also is he best in scout mode or hidden, and what should I use him for, boosting combat effectiveness or character slaying. Finally what items ,if any are worth giving this already pricey but cool guy.

well once I made a mystic assassin.

he was equiped as follows:

warpstone amulet (4+WARD)
bands of power

or if your worried to much about getting the bands of power dispelled, you can substitue the bands for the sword of might.

use him as a flank/rear charger (on his own, not within a unit) and he'll score massive wounds, plus enemy units cannot counter-attack in a flank/rear engagement.

hope this helps!

I prefer to give an Assassin Warpstone Stars. This lets him effectively snipe at units. I wouldn't trade his 2 poisoned hw for a magic weapon though.

I would rather let him scout than hiding him in a unit. This works good to let him get to war machines and the flanks of enemy units. If there is no place for him to scout to, then I would consider hiding him.

Use him to attack the flanks and rear of cavalry units. The most models you can come into combat with is 2 and there's a good chance the assassin can take them out. Be mindful of such things as being outnumbered, opponent's banner bonus, additional ranks, etc. Nothing worse than cutting down your opposition and them still winning combat even though they can't attack back.

Well, with your oppoents an Assassin with the Gouger or BoP (or Dwarf-Slayer for that matter) might be nice to hide in your Generals unit. Calverly are just Swordsmen on horses and better armor. Take the armor out of the equation, and you are fighting swordsmen on horse with an assassin. I think you will win that one :P .

Try it, and if it dosn't work you can always change your list for the next game.

how is the dwarf slayer good against bretts or elves?

hevely armoured brettoinian knights you say? the gouger is good for that, but under most cercumstances the two poisoned hand weapons he has as standard will be more usefull than any magic weapon, though warpstone stars are good

mutate: anything that gives him a ward save is good, as he has no armour

Cheers everybody for throwing some light on the subject. That dwarf slayer revalation was interesting to say the least  .

I think I now have an idea about how to go about using him, as per your suggestions. Both my opponents have mostly decked out cavalry so I'll probobly hang back and pick a soft target if I can't get the points together for a gouger.

I'll stick him in hiding against knights only if I can afford the gouger. Theres no point really trying to kill knights with his basic weapons is there? The problem is it may be trickey to get 50 pts to spend, the list (posted in army lists) currently has him with a warpstone amulet and is pretty tight as it is.

Cheers

Grit
