Regular old Empire or Cult of Ulric; which should I choose

I am thinking of changing from my Standard Empire list to something a little more specialized. I was wondering if anybody could help me by listing pros and cons of both armies.

Your help is appreciated.

I know the cult requires a small level of converting... as well as uses more metal figures other then that I dont know much about them sorry ...

Cult of Ulric had as lot less artillery and similar stuff. So if you want to do Ulric, make sure you want to give some of that up.

Cult of Urlic! Warriors of Urlic with LA and Sheilds are the exact same as Swordsmen, but cost only 4 points. ^_^

I used to be schizophrenic, BUT WE'RE OKAY NOW!

Depending on your approach, both are different...
STD empire: Usually the only STD empire i see around my place is 'The empire gunline' Shooty wadda wadda wadda... A SAD list...
You can also face the STD footmen list, it's not as commmon in my area, but I find it even deadlier... And more fun to play against...

Now, the cult of ulric...
ONE of my opponent is currently converting his army toward a cult army...
So far I haven't played against them, but this is how they look so far:
You get none of this shooty thing you have in a gunline, so if you're into this, maybe you won't like the ulric thingy...
But, if you're a footmen army player, or a cavalry player, this is more your thing...
They get better cavalry, better footmen, and the priest are good magical backup...
I would compare the ulric cult with, dare I say it, the chaos undivided...
You get more minis on the table though, as your cost is lower, but your individual fighter is also slighly weaker than chaos...

I would gladly update you on the cult of ulric as I battle them... Soon...

I say Cult because Cults are always cool. *Snickers*

Aside from that, I really don't know the difference, but given the previous comments, I'd have to with the Cult anyways.

Good luck in whichever you choose to do. ^_^

As with most armies it's down to preference as well. If you don't think the CoU suits your style, or liking, then you shouldn't gor for it, but as you do seem to like it, and would enjoy collecting, painting converting and gaming with it, then go for it!

As for tactics I don't have a clue, as I've never collected either!

I like the idea of the cult better myself.

Unfortunately, I think it's rather worse than the common Empire list.

- No detachments. Free countercharges in the flank are great! So are cheap screening troops that don't cause panic tests and can misdirect charges. Detachments force your opponent to spend a lot of effort on attacking your basic infantry units.

- No mages, only priests. Priests can be nice, very nice against low-leadership armies like Orcs, beastmen or Skaven. But they're rather expensive. Defensively, you'll be allright because of the bonus dispel dice. (you won't have dispel scrolls, though. Just those shard thingies.) Offensively, expect your magic to be useless. Even if your low-power prayers get through, their effects are weak.

- No shooting save for archers. Others have covered this one. Suffice to say, not very nice.

The strengths of the list would be the very cheap warriors of Ulric (5 points for weaponskill 4 4+ save warriors. Or for unarmoured weaponskill 4 warriors with greatweapons.) and huntinghounds. (7 point fast cavalry. Only movement 7, but they don't cause panic tests, which is very nice.) They can also field lots of nasty White Wolf knights, as well as several stubborn infantry units.

I imagine a succesful Ulric list would use small units of hounds to set up flank-charges from the numerous blocks of Ulric warriors, combined with small, hard-hitting support units of White Wolf Knights.
"I have a post-Armageddon vision. We and all other large animals are gone. Rodents emerge as the ultimate post-human scavengers. They gnaw their way through New York, London and Tokyo... within 5 million years, a whole range of new species replace the ones we know. Herds of giant grazing rats are stalked by sabre-toothed predatory rats. Given enough time, will a species of intelligent, cultivated rats emerge?"
