Over in the Eshin section I got sidetracked from discussing sorcerers to BSBs in an UCoD army. I agree with what Nurgl!tch said over there, that a banner waving rat doesn't really fit in well with a sneaky ninja army. At the same time I am thinking that the banner doesn't actually HAVE to be a banner. Just something the ninja rats would hold sacred, like the DoW paychest. Anyone have any suggestions for what could act as a Battle Standard yet not be so blatantly out of place? My first thought was a kind of sacred ninja scroll, but hopefully someone has a better idea. |

brainstorming some ideas here... -a sharp stick with a dead head on it.. not a big banner you know.. just a thin stick.. it would be demoralizing for the other army.. -yeah i like the scroll. there are a few scrolls you can use from fantasy or 40k bitz -maybe a falcon? or a mascot creature.. some sort of creature the eshin army is fond of and believes it gives them extra stealth ability etc.. -anything poisoned is good too.. maybe a tub full of poison for all the poisoned weapons to be dipped in peroidically thats a cool one haha-how about a TOTALLY BLACK banner with a latern behind it.. you know.. so opponent wont see it coming but the eshin army behind the banner would see the light and rally towards it eh? or even maybe cut out a design in front of the latern like a jack o latern.. make it scary for the enemy.. or whatever -hmmm what else... a big banner saying RADSTAR RULES! haha look forward to any other ideas, i enjoy brainstorming cheers roger |

Some kind of magic sword or claw perhaps? If you could pull it off, maybe a chieftan holding aloft a ripped out heart of a hated enemy? |

I also liked the idea of some sort of grisly trophy. Perhaps, the head or other body part of a famous or difficult to kill opponent. The backlit banner could be cool too. Have the side facing the enemy be flat black and have a design on the back with a lantern at the top. That is VERY tempting, but I would like to hear any more suggestions too. Especially, something traditionally oriental. |

I was thinking of that... Or maybe it could be a stick with the heads of the important people that army has assassinated? I like that one... |

For oriental ideas, the japanese were said to carry this giant ceremonial sword (O-dachi) to battle, and it sorta acted like a standard to them. They also had this war fan thing used to signal orders to troops:![]() Picture courtesy of Mantisswords, supplier of replica oriental weapons. I reckon it makes a pretty elegant banner. Here's another pic of samurai banners: Picture courtesy of SBarber Models. The dude on the far left is holding a war fan. The sashimono (back banner) he's wearing is quite small and doesn't stick out too much. |

Thanks, Scrivener, the pictures of those minis is helping me brainstorm. I am thinking the back banner (sashimono) may be the way to go. It's small and unobtrusive. My master assassin will be armed with a Fell Blade which I am modeling as a no-dachi/O-dachi (w/e). So having another big blade as a BSB may not work for me. Anyone out there read any fantasy ninja manga or anything? That is where my idea for scrolls came from but I am not an expert in the field by any means. |

Yeah, Daionosis, I may very well put a Mordheim lantern on the back of the banner.

a bit small to be a banner. but if you make a big stick with loadsa enemy heads on, that'd work too, is fun to vonvert and looks better than one dead head. cheers, Daionosis |

I looked up some ninja scroll stuff and it, err, turns out the movie called Ninja Scroll was a substituted english title misnomer No scrolls in that movie <_<If you're going with an oriental ninja look, and a scroll, I think a hanging scroll as a banner might be cool, sorta like: ![]() Except black with runes on it. Which would be sorta be a smaller version of the blue banner in the middle. Then you could hang the lantern at the back behind it. |

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone. What I am now thinking of is a thin scroll-like back banner with a lantern on top at the back. I really like that samurai model with the back banner. I think it would look cool (in my mind's eye) on the battlefield flowing and snapping in the wind as the ninja rats charged forward. I won't get started on this conversion until my new box of Night Runners get here. Probably in a week. Plenty of time for more great suggestions! |
