I stopped in the hobby store today to talk to a pal who was playing a game (O&G vs WE). This friend is older (30s) and a great guy, but he isn't that good and is considering giving up the game because he hasn't won a game in several months. He was playing a kid who is a certified *^%(*&^. His favorite pastime is to watch games and tell people how moronic they are and give them unwanted advice. He is also one of those people who comes unhinged if he rolls bad and threatens suicide every time he gets beat. ----- So I am watching for a while, and I cannot help but marvel at how much the jerk is cheating. Finally, about turn 3, I couldn't take it anymore and called him on three things he tried to cheat on in a row: 1. His glade guard were engaged in combat and got charged in the flank. They panic and flee. He says that the ogres have to roll to pursue, then measure the charge to see if they catch (meaning that they charge 2D6). So the Ogres roll and get high enough to catch the glade guard, and the WE player says that they were caught, so the ogres have to face the nearest table edge, because that is the direction the guard would have fled. WTH???? The result of this was that the ogres were running forward 6", then turning around to face the way they came because of the nearest edge. This also means that the group of wardancers that were directly on the other side of the glade guard (within redirect range) can charge them in the rear next turn. 2. There was a unit of the WE ranked archers being charged in the rear by a group of boar boys, and he was going to stand and shoot. 3. Another unit of WE ranked archers were charged in the flank by a wyvern, and he claimed that they did not have to take a fear test because the archers could not see the wyvern until it was too late, so they wouldn't run from it. --------------- I pointed these out and he admitted (without being shown the rulebook) that he was wrong on all of those claims. After I pointed out the last one, he kicks the table hard enough to knock down most of the minis, jumps up, starts pushing me and swearing at me. (Note: He is about 20, but barely comes up past my shoulder, the epitome of a 90lb wuss) He demands to know whether I am plaing the game or him. Finally, I got tired of him before he got tired of pushing me, so I grabbed him by the shoulders and told him that he was playing the game, but it was people like him that gave gamers a bad name. I let go and left the store. He followed me into the mall, but when I turned around and asked him if he had something else to say, he stopped and went back into the store. ---------------- So the real question is: Should I have said anything about his cheating? He has been playing for several years and is famous for being a lying, cheating, win at any costs player. His opponent is a soft spoken guy who has been playing off and on for about 8 months, and isn't that familiar with the rules. I try not to be a jerk, and make it a point not to offer unsolicited advice to players (and no advice when a game is going without both player's approval). What would you have done? |

The exact same thing. The guy deserved everything you said. Cheaters piss me off royally, ESPECIALLY when they take advantage of soft-spoken people like that. Misinterpreting/Forgetting rules is one thing. Doing it on purpose to get a HUGE advantage (as he was) is an entirely different ball game. |
...And all this time I thought there was only one way to "retire" from the Council! What you call "retire", I call a "stay of execution"..whats in a word? i agree with llama. you did the right thing. ...what a douchebag. the last guy like that i played did empire and even still he wasn't as bad (even though he had an extra special choice, moved his minis while i wasnt watching, tried to get rerolls on artillery dice using the Second Sign spell (which only allows rerolls on a d6)... stuff like that. plus, his army was absolute cheese. still.. that is the worst example of gaming I've ever heard of. ...personally I would *censored* but im a bit hot-tempered sometimes |

I also agree entirely with what you did, and you are right, he is the kind of person who give gamers a bad name. Even competitive gamers are, on the average, good guys although out to win games. This guy is just a jerk and he reminds me ALOT of a guy in seattle ;p A guy who managed to get 1 point of sportsmanship per game in the seattle GT for bending the rules... too bad he was a skaven player. My theory is that these people need ot be exposed and hopefully the soft spoken players will just refuse thema game if asked. I can name several people who I would refuse a game if they wanted to play for this very same reason. Eventually the will have to drop the hobby or change their ways. |

He is one of two people that I refuse to play for cheating. It is sad, cause it seems like the more people that refuse to play him, the fewer games he gets, and the more he cheats because of his obsessive need to win. It really makes me sad. I love the game and I love playing, but people like that just annoy me to no end. |

I would have done the same, people like that should be called on their cheating, with a little luch they get eventually get so bored with beeing called on cheating that they quit the game. Somehow I don't think the gaming club or store or whatever would be worse of from someone like that quitting, the only thing he is liable to do is scare away players anyway. Of course, in my situation the friend in question would probably have beaten him sensless with the BRB for trying to cheat, considering that my gaming friends are people who have a very low tolerance for idiots.

You did the right thing entirely, and perhaps by pointing out all of his cheating, you might encourage the one guy to stay because he won't see all gamers as bad apples. It's really sad that the dude had to play a cheater of that magnitude, and it's even worse to see players stoop to that level. I personally hope the cheater learns to grow up and figures out at some point that winning isn't in fact everything. Here's to hoping. |

I would have acted similarly (although I'm not sure I would have been able to refrain from giving this kid a poke in the solar plexus when he started a shoving match.) Hopefully the harsh light of reality will make this weed dry up and blow away. I played someone like this about 12 or 13 years ago, in my first game of Epic 40k. I wouldn't go near a game like this until just this past November, the experience was so bad. Bravo! |

Almost the same thing happend to my friend except the guy made such a huge deal about loseing that he knocked over a book rack and is no longer welcome in my local store. Still players like that can be annoying but just keep you cool and I admire you for being the bigger man and just walking away. |

You did exactly the right thing; I just can't believe that the store staff didn't step in. Why on earth they haven't already banned this annoying little cheat who is obviously bad for the image of the game (to say nothing of pushy) is beyond me! |

I wouldnt have punched this guy, purely because I want to be welcome in all GW stores, but it seems he deserved more than a punch! What a whiney, cheating little git!! Why bother playing if you only play to win? how boring!!! Speaking of being thrown out of GW, a friend of mine was LITERALLY thrown out of GW once!! Aparantly he was making really bad jokes and acting like a complete idiot, so some of the staff members chucked him out into the mall. Literally picked up and threw!!! He probably deserved it, but he's generally a good guy, and definately not a cheater!!Entaro Adun, and death to the cheaters!!! |

That reminds me of a guy i played today, he dosnt cheat as much but justmakes his lists so tight they are not fun at all, and knows every rule and uses them all to complex things. its not cheating as such, just he has to have a stopre vote on the clarification of rules if they are to benmifit him. there are cheaters, once i n our store we had a 2k day where u had to cheat and the other player would get points for noticing each of ur cheats while u got points for the ones that he didnt notice its amazing how good some peeps are at cheating lol |

GW, sucking the fun out of the hobby since 1999. Never worry. Worst case scenario you die, and then there was no point worrying anyways. Skaven repaint overhaul Number 5! (2/5th complete) | |
