Hi, I'm considering getting warplightning cannon but just wondering whether it is useful or just another fluffy unit? It's limited range of 28" (on average) means you have to move quite near the enemy. In a 2k game, how many of you actually find it useful? how many would you field? how do you optimize its use? |

1 Not me. I prefer getting more models with those points. 2 In 2K, none. 3K, maybe 1. 3 Fire at heavily armored cavalry down the flank of the unit. That is devastating. Or fire it so it hits an enemy character. |

Here be my view on the warp lightning cannon 1 I dont realy find it usefull at all. It just looks cool and nasty 2 normaly in 1.5k or more i take one, unless im against a horde army 3 I place mine behind a woods so i can fire through it and not get shot back. Pretty cool against wood elves (well, the old rules. havnt read the new ones yet) So, overall its pretty good to get in my opinion for 100 points but dont expect it to be too reliable (then again, this is a skaven army. Nothing is reliable!!) |

My army theme is skroulder (skryre and moulder) so I would include 1 in a 2k army, if i ever get to 4k, then id add another. There useful against characters that other missles cant hit, and heavy cavalry can die quite fast if you get 6 strength at least squeeks |

I use it starting at 2k My MO is to put it on one flank, move it up the first turn so that it can fire approximately down the flank of the army, then screen it with a unit of 5 night runners. That prevents it from being charged, but does not block shooting (just make sure you move the night runners in the movement phase so there is a gap between them where you want to shoot) It has done me very well. For 100 points, you can't beat its value |

i love my warp lightening cannon. no character can leave a unit, or he is in great danger. the abilit to hit MANY models is great. st8+ is chariot-killing. ev enst6 is most of the time. hide it behind a wood (which i ALWAYS do when i have a wood to hide behind, even better is IN the wood of course) and shoot away. the enemy will have to work hard to get it away from there, a slave unit is usually enough to defend it. ps: screening with night runners doesn´t really work well in most cases. you just have to charge the night runners. they either flee, then you redirect at the wlc. or they fight, probably lose and then you have to test for panic on ld5 for the cannon. and tehn you´ll be overrun anyway. even if the distance is too great for a panic test then you still have only bought a single round of fire. it´s better to hide it behind a wood and/or screen it with slaves. most fast flanking units will have trouble beating slaves and using elite units to fight slaves and chase a wlc is a waste. and you can happily shoot though them, if you feel the need to do so. |

But warp cannon is chariot and take damage entering woods right? Perhaps I'll take one and hide behind wood. Thanks! |

I think it only takes damage if it moves in the wood? As long as it is depolyed there, I think it is fine. My basis for that is the BRB says that chariots take damage from moving into difficult terrain. I could be wrong though Wouldn't be the first time... |

Never thought of putting it in the woods to begin with. I can't think of anything that would go againced doing that off the top of my head. The only problem is that you would have no chance a moving it and so the enemy could manuver around it fairly easily. Even still, you have to have good rolls for both the distance and the strength, and dice usually averages out fairly low to make it worth all the points. |

I use one in two k They are good at killing stuff ur opponent thought out of reach always deploy them in a forest, dont bother guarding for the extra cost of what u want to defend it makes it not worth it. remember it only has to kill about five knights to earn its place. dont shoot at stuff more than 23 away, ull never reach it! dont forget about the ward save and saying whomm dosnt hurt either |

GW, sucking the fun out of the hobby since 1999. Never worry. Worst case scenario you die, and then there was no point worrying anyways. Skaven repaint overhaul Number 5! (2/5th complete) | |

it is awesome in Lustria cames, because it is not affected by trees. Last week I took out a Stegadon, and almost killed a Slann. The only misfire, was a strength 2 hit that did nothing to the cannon. whoo hoo. In a SAD Skyre army you should have 2, in a unbeardy, fair, skaven army no more than 1 (in a 2000 point army). MR |

I use 1 in 2k pt games if I use any at all. I agree that deploying in a forest is best if you can. Especially if it is a nice big forest where the enemy actually has to moce into it before they can even see it. Plus, unless they are WE or skirmishers they will be charging through difficult terrain. The only downfall is that you will not be able to move it at all so all your opponent has to do is stay away from your forest. Don't shoot at anything over the average roll because risking the Misfire isn't usually worth it. Be picky at what you shoot at. Maximize the points that you will kill when you do shoot. Basically shoot at expensive units or units htat could easily be panicked by losing only a few models (like most fast cavalry). Pick on enemy characters because you can. Have fun with it above all else! |

My group of mates at GW tend to stick to 1000 pts (haven't got 2000 points, myself, anyway . I field a warp lightning cannon mostly for fun. I doubt it hasever killed 100 points but everyone says 'oh no' when i declare i'm firing and then 'Jesus' or 'God' or something to that affectwhen i pick up 8D6 to see how far it shoots :P. Tactics wise it can be used for 2 things, really;1 : Put it somewhere so that hethinks twice before putting a valuable unit there. 2 : use it to take out heroes, high save or tough units. - Tarondor |

Average range is 28", just in case anyone was wondering. I love the cannon for its pure intimidation factor. Just seeing it changes people's plans. |

I use one because it really like the model. In my 2K army it has its place along with the 230 rats. They are great fun. As people have pointed out they can intimidate your opponent. |
