Heya,

I currently use 4x 25 clanrats, 4x 20 slaves, 1x 20 monks.. but am planning on using 3x 20 monks.. and then 4th special choice would be either tunneling team or jezzails..

Wondering if anyone thinks 3x 20 monks maybe too much? This is for 2000-2250 point games.. I think its a good call.. I think 3 frenzied units will give my opponent alot to worry about!

Cheers

I'm in the same dilema!

I currently own 2 x 25 plague monks and 2 x 9 plague censer bearers. 9 censers per tean is too large for me!
So I'm thinking on expanding to the same number (3 x 20) and then breaking down my censers to 3 x 6, more appropiate in size and cost!($$$)

Just gotta go on ebay or barter to get those oop metal monks. <_<

I dont play 3000 point games so I dont need 3 units of censers but 3x20 monks does sound good.. I just need 9 more metal monks and then i have enough for 3 units.. i have to get a couple extra to subsitute for the champ because i dont use the champ.. is there any good stragety for using the champ?

i thought maybe use him to draw the general out and kill off the champ instead of many of my monks.. not sure if thats effective though

ah i guess will just wait and see :)

If this is a pestilance army then hell yh! although make sure u get some pussbags and rotten rodents. If its a normal army then it is going to dominate all ur other choices, as u wont have many speacial chioisces left, nor any rare. and ur three units of clannies will take up the erest of ur points..... so pestilance yay horde nay

For your 4th special choice, I'd suggest that you take jezzails over a tunneling team. While the tunneling team can be a nice surprise ... it can be a wonderful disappointment when it comes late, at the wrong spot, or not at all. Hell, it can come up in the wrong spot, panic, and cause a chain of panic tests. Jezzails are hated more by other players (usually) and quite reliable (though we are skaven, if you like to gamble ... tunneling team is for you, lol ... just too bad they can't blow themselves up ... or can they?)

For a normal skaven army too many frenzied troops can be a liability as you can lose some of the tactical control needed to play a good horde style. Plus for the points they take up you lose out a chance to take other unit choices. Like CBs, if you're going to take monks you should make use of that and take at least a unit of CBs, the toughness test is invaluable. If you're fielding that many monks, it's probably better to go pestilens.

With that many hordish units and only other special unit, I'd say avoid tunnellers. They're expensive and a specialized bonus support unit IMHO, like WLCs, not a unit to be heavily relied on to be a major contributor.

Plague Monks are expensive, and I would go for two units of 25, one with the banner of Burning Hatred. I also agree with Sebrent about the jezzails. They are very flexible, and I suggest using them aggaist chariots as most units in your army would not take a good charge from a chariot. Also shoot Knights as you have very little things in your force that can produce a -4 save modifier (armour piercing and S6).

I almost always have 3X20 Monks and it's worked great for me! That way you have more freedom in placement and if a few die it doesn't really matter.

That seems fine to me, more than fine, i think it is great. Frenzied units are amazing you just have to learn how to use them, i haven't ever found frenzy a problem, just a solution

I field just twenty with a plague priest (lord skrolk model yay) with bop and amulet and xhand weapon. this unit will much through anything given time. some of its exploits with very bad rolling from me are:

killed twenty grave guard over three turns
killed 75 goblins (three seperete units charged me one after the other lol)
killed a unit of 8 kroxigors and have even survived an encounter with a blood dragion vampire on a zombie dragon! (although in fairness that was close he beat me down to just the ole preist who then promptly got fed up and nuttted the poncy vamp, his dragon flew away lol)

so u dont need loads to get places on the feild of war

just one quick off topic thing here, dosnt anyone find that playing 4x25 clannies and 4x20 slaves a boring way to play? i mean thats 1k of points gone straight away, surley it must be slightly boring? i mean they r all the same colour strengths weaknesses (i can see the tactical side is gd, just well i like to play fluffy lists rather than winning lists)(yes i do play sad at times in the name of fluff, but i always tell me opponent a week in advance that ill be using em so he has lots of time to piant up more mages and write a list lol)

The more and more I play with the new plague monks (I couldn't ever get some of the old ones, and I didn't want to pay that much for models I didn't like) the more and more I like them. I really thought that they would be too weak, but so far I really do like them.

Back on topic, It hink 3 By 20 is a little small, where I prefer 5 by 5, just have some extra rank soakage, but then again, having that many units you probably don't really need it.

Dont say that having lots of small units is good, because theyll panic and all of them flee, so i would rather have 2 units of 30 then 3 units of 20... but thats just me
