Cauldron: Aye or Nay?

My method of playing Warhammer is to play with one army while painting up a second and planning/ collecting the third. So at the moment I am playing with an UnderNippon themed Eshin army ("The EKA NINJRATS")/ painting up a 450 mini Warlord army ("Clan Ratshamon") and collecting the minis for a Pestilens army ("The Ikki-ikki").

I am really happy with the orbat I have raised for the Pestilens force, and I think I have nailed the theme (basing it on the Ikko-ikki movement in Japan in the late 15th/ early 16th Centuries - a movement of religiously inspired warrior monks & fanatics). And the balance of Plague Monks, Censor Bearers and Pusbags seems to work (in theory at least).

My one dilemna is whether to make it a magic heavy army and go with a Pontifex, two Festering Chantors and the Cauldron (my initial preferene, to distinguish Pestilens from my other Skaven armies); or a magic light army based on a Plague Lord and some Plague Priests; or to drop the Cauldron only and replace it with a Plague Priest and a Rat Spawn or some Plague Rats (although 65pts does seem way overpriced).

So I bow to my more experienced Brethren and ask for your advice.

In my oppinion the cauldron isnt that great, i mean its 200 pts + the mage. and for all of that i get to cast plague. big whoop. personnly my oppinion of pestilance is a fanatical fighting force, so i would only take enuff magic to give me a gd defense, and even then id use death frenzy more cos it fits the theme so much better!
GW, sucking the fun out of the hobby since 1999.

Never worry. Worst case scenario you die, and then there was no point worrying anyways.

Bunny ear says flop

*blinks*... beg your pardon? That would give most units toughness 1, something I really think is WAY to overpowering.

The Cauldron might indeed cost more then some might wish to pay for it, but it's one hell of a bound spell you create there. I mean, you can cast Plague without losing any power dice, and your opponent may rightly fear its presence on the battlefield!!!

if you take the couldron, you cant take much other festerings, or else youll be spending 2 much points on magic. Im on Vinshqueeks side for this, its expensive, but VERY powerful

Talk about revisiting history!

I've committed my self some time ago to a Cauldron, if for no other reason than to provide a spectacular visual centrepiece for the army. It will be done up as a mobile shrine carried by 6 saffron clad devotees (the Censor Bearers of the army - and eventually The Puguru's, aka Nurglitch's, litter bearers - being the only others in saffron).

And I do intend to roll 3 dice every turn to cast Plague (hang the risk - I'm Skaven!).

I say nay, but just barely. Paying that many points for the plague spell one more time (When it can't affect a unit more than once) is just kinda stupid.

It should have another effect on it, such as they have to test and -1 Toughness, or something to that degree, make it really deadly, since this isn't the run of the mill plague spell its coming from a cauldren of plague.

The fun magic aside, it also benefits whatever unit you put it in the same way a Screaming Bell does. Not a bad thing to have when things go south for your plague monks. Not to mention that means when it charges into combat with your army, it will inflict some nasty impact hits ... not too bad to have in a frenzied army with lots of attacks anyways. Magic no longer aside... this thing has PLAGUE as a bound spell. For those running bubonic courts, this is great. You have nurglitch who makes whatever unit he is with immune to things like plague, censers, pestilence breath, nurgle, etc. So put him in the thick of it and cast the plague all day.

sounds good to me, i love plague so to cast it without any of my 9 power dice or 9 warpstone tokens would be great.

I like this idea... magic generally doesn't work out well for me, and I think it is more fun to get into combat and overwhelm your enemies!

It depends, I personally would take one but then I also load up on cheap plaguemonk units and very little else when I'm playing with the new pestilence list.

If you are taking a magic strong army, take it. If not, don't bother as it will probably get dispelled anyway if you don't have the mages to whittle down the opponents dispell dice/cash in the whittled down dispell dice.

Well if your making a LARGE army then it would be good. Nothing smaller than 2500 and that would be pushing it.

I'm still for it though, if you were making a magic heavy army.
