Stars or Slings?!?!; This question is eating at my sanity...

I think slings are probably just more situational. For example, if you're fighting beastmen and can't dance around their skirmish units due to 360degree LOS, you might be better off holding them at range and pelting them with stones.

I would go for the stars, after reading all those good arguements, i can't deny...

I take both (although on different units).

My current Eshin list (500 pts) has 40 Night Runners in 4 units of 10. 2 have Stars/additional Hand Weapons, 1 has slings, 1 has Additional Hand Weapons.

My only problem with slings is that, with UCoD, you only have a 2/3 chance of getting to use their full range. So many times I've rolled a 2 or 4 when I've lined up my slings for a long shot, wasting them for that turn.
Stars-you have to be 6" away. This is not always a good thing-anything with 360 degree LOS can get a charge in, you will always be in range of their counterattacks, and characters may well choose to charge out of their regiments to slap your poor rats about.
I would take more slings if it wasn't for the high price.

I am not really a shooty type of player and prefer to spend my points elsewhere such as 2HWs or more nightrunners etc, but occassionally when I take stars it is over slings for basically all the reasons previously stated such as cost, penalties when moving etc.

I'm thinking of starting an Eshin army now too. Luckily, my Warlord Clan has always made extensive use of Eshin troops so this shouldn't be too hard. I think stars are more effective overall. I have two 15 model units of Nightrunners with stars. However, I also have a unit of 10 Nightrunners armed with slings for when I do need to hang back and shoot at the enemy. I don't think I'd go straight across the board with either. A little variety is better so that you can be prepared if the need arises.

It's to bad slings aren't like they are in Morderhem where they are by far one of the cheapest ranged weapons. I guess that’s what you get when it’s based on the actual cost of equipping a unit with slings, but Warhammer pt cost is based more on the effectiveness. They do seem a little point costly compared to other races missile weapons, but I suppose this is made up for by Scyre's powerful guns.

I guess it could be that when training gutter runners to use slings the self inflicted injuries and wild shots kill or maim slightly less then half of them.

I never give my Night Runners shooting weapons mainly because they march untill they can charge (12"!!!) I don't see the point. but I guess they would be usefull if your opponents charge. I would always go with throwing stars let's face they are cool. That is the main reason that I will chose them over slings (and they are also better than slings for all the reasons people stated). I really would like to see a shooty eshin army.

Charging isn't always the best option. You could run alongside the unit where it can not see you to charge back and just toss stars w/o the chance for retribution. After the unit has been softened up (maybe a rank or two gone), you can collapse whatever flanking units on it and break it.

With the lack of standard and ranks I wouldn't be inclined to sending in Nightrunners asap into HtH combat. They excel at being harrassment troops as Tilara suggested, shooting and manouvering. I think the only real downside to stars is the range, which will just have to be compensated with more dancing around.

For sure u can stand and shoot with stars. Range doesn´t matter while stand and shoot. U can allways do it.
Funny thing when u force a panic test on 10" with 6" range =) but it works with the rules.

Quick question about stars, you are limited to the 6" move if you want to throw right? I have heard it both ways because they are skirmishers. 11" of range is pretty limited though.

Yes, its written very clearly in the rules. Skirmishers moving at double rate, despite not being counting as marching, still may not shoot.
Fast Cav has a rule which is an exception to march&shoot.

Skaven are all about mass ammounts...

to that end slings are a much better feel for that... once behind enemy lines and march blocking then you can unlease 2x shots often as you dont having to move them sometimes...

those that i dont have extra hand weapons with they have slings and not just because I have an insane ammount of nightrunner spures :D (I have 19 flails i have no idea what to do with, and I have 20 slings *snicker*)

For me it's an issue of taste.

I prefer stars because they're more fluffy and fit better into the Eshin feel in my eyes, where as slings remind me of Age of Empires slingers. Bad thing!

But I don't expect many ppl are bound to the fluff and fell of their army in the way I am.
