Now, FOR THE QUESTION: Should I give my Night and Gutter Runners stars or slings?!?! I cant decide!!

2 Hand Weapons and Stars
-270

6 Gutter Runners

slings = x2 attacks at close range suffer penaltys
stars = thrown less range no pentaltys

most people go with the stars due to skaven low bs so id go with the crowd on this one as i dont do skaven shooty
Shhhh I'm not here

Do be afraid of the dark....
Stars, stars always hit on 4+ usually whereas if you move shoot twice you are alreading hitting on a 6

In a nutshell

Stars.... They hit more often, and they allow you to move and shoot more easily!

Slings just suck.

both.

i wonder why few people take slings.

sometimes more range is needed and once you are close to an opponent shooting twice as many shots can help a lot.

and having both helps keeping your sanity intact. :P

Stars (read the haiku in my sig).

We are not a firepower based army, so with our average BS, we need as few negative factors as possible on what shooting we actually do.

Just my two shots' worth,

for all the reasons above, stars. The only situation 2 situations I can think of where the slings are better are when your outside of stars range and you shoot once (likely moved so hitting on 6's) and when you can stay still and shoot twice at close range. In my experience, those don't come up often so I take stars every time now (in fact, I just converted all my sling NRs into another setup).

I don't see real dilemma here. It's quite simple: sling is TWICE as expensive compared to stars, while being, in my humble opinion, less usable. Remember that one Night Runner costs 5 pts. and sling is 4 pts... it's 80% cost of the model... Utter and definite NAY.
Stare into nothingness for too long and you will forever be seduced by it's beauty...

The only time I can think of slings being really useful is if you had a cheap unit fighting an expensive unit and you wanted to use the life is cheap rule to kill off some of the expensive troops then your slings could fire twice at close range to really pump shots into the combat.

slings! me gonna be different, i tell u slings can be real nasty specially aagainst slow moving armies like dwarfs, where they can get out side ur two shots range within one tun:>, apart form that stars
GW, sucking the fun out of the hobby since 1999.

Never worry. Worst case scenario you die, and then there was no point worrying anyways.

I'd say stars, especially at 500 pts, since slings are double the cost of throwing stars (i think) and hit less of the time.

with slings on a stand ans shoot reaction (or moving)

10 night runners

moving: hits on 5s
double shot: hits on 6's.

20 shots
hits 3.3333333333333 times

throwing stars

10 shots
hits 5 times.

same strength.

The only time you would use slings is if you are feeling weird and give them to slaves.... The massive string of 30 slaves and a stand and shoot response of 60 slings is always fun though:P

adavantages of throwing stars: More accurate. hits 50% of the time, no special modifiers.
Disadvantages: Short range, meaning that if you can shoot at them, they can charge you (if shots aren't on the flank)

slings advantages: more shots, better range
Disadvantages: You are always at least at a -1, from long range, or double shooting. Its a 11.5% chance (appx) of hitting each time if moved, a 33% chance if not moving.

i'd say definately stars... i used to play one unit of 10 with slings just to hang back and table quaters.. it used to be 5 but they couldn't hit anything.. with 10 they still didn't do much... and in any case since the rest of my army is advancing its almost a wate of a unit... and in stand and shoot vs fast cav stars can at lesat hit...

so yea.. definately not slings..

obviously stars hit more often when they shoot. everybody has done their maths.

but slings have 3! times the range. there are a lot of situations where slings simply won´t be able to shoot. i´d rather shoot a lot of shots that hit at 6 (or 7 even) than not shoot at all.

i don´t know how you all play eshin but i like to keep my units as safe as possible. the range increase that slings give me helps a lot to do that.

with stars you may have to move into range of opposing shooters, get out of cover, move into range of spells or a number of other stuff you´d rather not do so you can shoot. with slings you can get a few shots of and are still safe.

also the fact that you get to spread your troops (some close/some further away)more means the enemy has a harder time chasing them.

sometimes it´s more than maths. slings are twice as expensive because they are more versatile.

ps:

don't get me wrong, stars are the right way to go imo but i don't think slings are getting proper representation in this discussion. smaller sized units of night runners can benefit quite well from slings. larger sized units are a bad idea because the weapon costs really add up. consider instead of fielding a single unit of 20 night runners with stars using two units of 10 runners, one with slings and the other with nothing. have the unequipped unit provide screening for the back unit as the shoot away at their increased range (over stars). if the front unit gets charged have the sling unit stay back and pelt the combat with x2 shots.
but slings do still kinda suck. they could be improved greatly by making the gutter runner slings poisonable. imagine your tunneling unit popping up behind some high toughness target and unloading like 20 poisoned attacks from a distance :)

I have been thinking about the same thing. I have an eshin army, but never took slings or stars. Now that my srmy is getting massacred by Slayers...especially doom seekers, I think it is imperative that everything shoots. Starst are great because no movement penalties and 2 points, but if you are charged by horses you will not be able to stand and shoot. Whereas if you have slings, you can stand and shoot against horses.

I'm gonna try stars though.
