Essex Miniatures do excellent strip magnets, and strip metal stuff as well to join them to.

Forcefield Magnets is the company I now love. $0.15 each for tiny, ultra strong magnets. The 3/16" diameter, 1/16" thick are the ones I use. Strong enough to hold even the heaviest figure upsidedown if needed... well, 20mm base figure anyhow. I put two under each of my doomwheels. =p

If you're worried about metal models being too heavy for magnetic strength to hold it in place, there these Rare Earth magnets that are reputedly superstrong for their size.

Not sure whether they can fit under the bases with the tabs sticking down the middle, though.

They do. =)
Well, I guess it depends what size you get. I have 3/16th diameter, 1/16th thick ones and they fit just fine. In fact, I put a tiny bit of greenstuff under them to "lower" them a little bit so they can make surface contact since base bottoms are a little more than 1/16th deep.
They say each of those can hold 4oz. and for weight comparision, most metal figures are about 1.0 - 1.5oz, poison wind globidiers with their huge backpack about 2oz. All of those work just fine.
Costs about 3x more to use those instead of sheet magnent though, but most of the sheet magent I've used in the past isn't very strong. Its enough to hold metal figures onto bases for movement or if table bumped but that's about it. The 'rare earth' ones stick really well.
