Lord of the Rings continuum

One writer has continued the Lord of the Rings book. I have read them both and I think the continuum is much better. And is is super popular. It's called the Ring of the darknes (just like the skaven item :D *bsb* :D ) The thing I wanted to ask is that do you think it's stupid that he continued the Lotr? The writer has asked permission from a Tolkiens son but still do you think it's stupid? Just wanted to know...

Stupid...

What does the writer want to accomplish?
Make a story which is better then LotR? Don't think he'll ever make it...
Dig into the history and geography of the LotR world? Already done by Tolkien himself...

So it's a no-no from my side...

At first I thought that too. But then I got reading it...

He is now my favorite writer and the book is my favorite book. No I think his reasons were that he just liked Lotr so much tht he wanted to continue it. He actually enlarged the Lotr-world by readin all of the possible writings of Tolkien himself. And he has a much better writing-style. And the story I think is much more interesting.

I have to agree with Vinshqueek on this one, I fail to see what could be gained from continuing the LotR tale. After all, it tied up quite nicely (even having a time line in an appendix detailing what happened to Sam AFTER Frodo left for the Grey Havens - he became Mayor!). And the author would have to be somewhat exceptional to eclipse Tolkien himself.....if he were in fact that good he should be writing his own stuff and not hijacking somebody elses.

Saying that, I've not read any of this continuation stuff, and would probably give it a once over just to see if my worst fears were confirmed! But as a theory....no. Tolkien's masterpiece should be left well alone.

(even having a time line in an appendix detailing what happened to Sam AFTER Frodo left for the Grey Havens - he became Mayor!).

Actually his story is based 300 years after the ring was destroyed... By different writing style I mean that he expalins all of the thing really good. And the battles are much better. He is a tactical genius! I mean that he writes all of the battles really tactically...

He has tons of his own books...

This book is voted for the best book ever in the Russia-areas (Russia, Latvia, Poland...)

Dabbling GM. Clanrat loon. 6th Edition Aficionado. Bitter.

id say leave it alone, if this guy is so great, why can he not create his own world and write about that? technically that's what he's doing anyway, but this way, its, well, cheap.

Tolkien may not have had the better writing style (though i have not got a clue, not read the continuation), but he created it all, creatures, races, geography and even whole languages.

and a good book makes battle confused, exciting, and messy, if i want to read about a tactical battle, ill get a book of tactics......

[/argument mode]

one more thing-
the only problem i have with the films (except for innacuracies-didn't aragorn go alone into the mountain of the dead?) is the removal of the hobbit civil war. this was the bit that showed that nothing had escaped the evils that were befalling the world, it really brought it home, that this was no fairytale, home was not safe...

other than that though.... ;)

Again like everybody else I would stay clear of the book. This author can only do one thing to the world of Lord of the Rings and thats RUIN it. The lord of the rings was is tolkien and tolkien is lord of the rings. It seems to me that this guy is a fraud its just like the guy who wrote about Barry Trotter a few years ago

Really he should have just made it his own series and avoided this controversy. If he's really the better writer than his books should be great without the previous works of tolkien.

I didn't like how Saruman was out of the final film as wll as the hobbit war. I hear the extended edition shows how Saruman is killed, but it's in a fight against Gandalf! [ie: not from the book] <_<

Those are still some of the greatest achievements in movie making, though. ^_^

Indeed, you heard right.

In the extended DVD Saruman is stabbed in the back by Wormtonge whilst at the top of Orthanc. Legolas then shoots Grima. Saruman then falls dramatically onto what looks like a water wheel.

Personally, I think the ending as detailed in the book is far, far superior. To find Saruman back in the Shire having corrupted it almost beyond recognition made me smile. (I always believed the Hobbits fared too well throughout the entire trilogy!!) Warlord Stinkhair is spot on when he says it was a point that life is not all about happy endings.

I think that in the book it was indeed the three of them that went into the mountain. But if we're into inaccuracies and omissions, lets start with the omission of Tom Bombadil (thank god, dratted tree-hugger that he was) - and also the fact that it is not explained in the film why Eowyn was struck down by illness when she stabbed the Witch King (that goes for Merry to, wretched Hobbit.... )

Well, who is this writer? Yourself? I mean you keep refering to him as "this guy", or "the writer" or "a tactical genious". I might check it out if its someone I know(not personaly)....
