The fell blade never really goes amiss give him that and the talisman of protection, thatll teach that shaggoth, he will also be able to turn chariots into matchwood if he hits. :D

It depends. Do you wish your warlord to go toe-to-toe with a Shaggoth and a Beastlord? That will be tough, for a Skaven character. A Fellblade may do the job, if your warlord isn't killed first. A safer option would be the Weeping Blade, Bands of Power and the Warpstone amulet. D3 wounds is great against all those multiple wound troops in the beastman army. The amulet gives you far more protection than the Fellblade-armed lord would have, and if you get the Bands of Power off he hits almost as hard. Less chance of killing yourself, too.

However, your best option may be to simply buy a cheap warlord to kill rank-and-file beasts and provide leadership. With the Lead from the Back rule you can avoid all fights you don't want. You save a lot of points this way, and have less risk of your warlord dying. If you want to do this, I would suggest arming the lord with a Great Weapon and the Warpstone amulet. 127 points total, decent hitting power and decent survivablility. And you have 75 extra points to buy rats.

Herds of giant grazing rats are stalked by sabre-toothed predatory rats. Given enough time, will a species of intelligent, cultivated rats emerge?"

I don't know if this a good idea but....
If you want to go toe to toe with the Shaggoth, try a Warlord with warpstone amulet, weeping blade, bands of power. If you're lucky it might work.
4 attacks ST8 d3 wounds 4+ward save

The problem with BoP is that they will easily get dispelled. he has 7 power dice and I have little magic to use it up...

The very least BoP will do is get him to use 1 or 2 dispel dice.
Maybe you'll be able to get a spell by him then.

As far as warlords go, I've been trying the following lately:

No magic gear.
You: Really Nilax, no magic gear at all...even for your general?
Me: Yes, none.

I've been trying out a warlord with the following premise:

All mundane equipment: Heavy armor and Halberd
Stick him in a unit with a champion. If you are faced with any challenges, remember the claw/fangleader can accept in place of the warlord. This gives your warlord the opportunity to butcher some of the front rank of the enemy unit...adding this to his own's combat resolution. If he gets wounded, he can always fall back to the rear to continue giving his Ld to your regiments.

What this does for you:

Ultra-cheap leadership 10 for your ranked units,
Psych-out when opponent tries to anticipate his gear and avoid him,
Extra punch to your main "hammer" unit.
More points to spend on new models.

I use the 100 points I might otherwise tool him up with to get two new units of 25 slaves. its been working really well so far.

I completely agree, Nilax. Warlords are best with as little magic as possible. A halberd/great weapon is so much better value for points than all those magical weapons out there.

However, I still think the warlord needs some protection, in the form of the Warpstone amulet. For only 25 points you effectively double his survivablility! With the amulet, he can at least take on the weaker enemy characters.

Have you ever thought of a grey seer? i dont give mine any gear in a 2000pts and less game, only in 2.5-3k games.Plague can realy hurt the beastheards and thy will probably be spread out so there is more of a chance that another unit of theirs is within 12".

Yeah, ended up using a grey seer coz no beastlord I copuld field would be able to win me the game. I ended up with a draw, but the seer only got off 1 spell in the whole game before being run down by bray shaman lord. But I did kill his shagoth with assassin!!! :D

Well,at least now you have some experience with Beastmen and know what to expect.
Killing the Shaggoth with your Assassin is a major accomplishment itself. Maybe take a Warlord(for LD),BSB(rerolls),and Warlocks (warplightning)next time.

Yeah, I want to trial a warlord soemtime...
The assassin had languisher sword, bands of power! Even with the shaggoth charging I was able to kill him, though he was already wounded...
Though the unit proceeded to get chagred in the flank by a chariot and fled, being chased down. I lost my assassin, BSB and 30 clanrats <_< damn.
