Today I finally caved and purchased for my army some Gutter Runners and an Assassin model. I had originally dodged the issue of recollecting an Eshin contingent for my forces as I had little love for the entire 'ninja rat' stereotype that fostered itself quite firmly. If I may ramble for a second -- I'm not a fan of having a Cathay army enter the field either, but I don't condemn those who do. Just a matter of differing tastes. Regardless, I caved and I have 9 pretty GRs and my Assassin. I sat down and gave them a good stare, figuring on how I'd make them anything other than 'ninja rats' by sticking them from places like Inda or Araby, when my freakishly geekish mind remembered that the root for 'assassin', discounting its first use in Dante's Inferno, was in regards to the Haschishin, or followers of Hassan of Alamut. Basically politico-religious trained killers. I mentioned this to my mate, painting Brets in the sofa across the room, and he nodded non-chalantly and said, "Yeah, Eshin - Haschishin. Same root. Sound the same. Didn't you know?" Fact of the matter was that it had never occured to me in quite that way before. Did any of you? I'm wondering if I was just slow and daft for only realizing the connection now. So.. to shorten this up a little -- I escaped Ninja Ratism by making my Eshin from Araby, allowing me to put my Cantonese/Hokkien away (I was going to call my assassin 'Gwai Lo' and paint him with white fur) and give them names like Fa Irik, Ahkrit and Taj Irik, et cetera. Where do your Eshin come from? Are they Ninja Rats of Nippon? Deadly killers from Inda or did you see the Persian connection prior and run with it? Talk. |

Is it really? I always assumed that Cathay was a fantasy China, with maybe Tibet. I see hopping vampires when someone says 'Cathay' for some reason.. ^^ |
