it's only going to hit one model per rank anyway. why is the width of the line an issue?

So he can cheese with a clipping. For example, if the tape is wide enough, he can hit 2 units instead of one. But that would be met with a great deal of bad mojo.

We all use the side of the tape, since it hits one model per rank and you can aim it how you want it.

I find it helps for n00b WLCists (such as myself) I plant a die on the board in the direction I want and then measure the distance in that direction. It sucks when I measure out the range and find the direction from my cannon muzzel going right beside the unit I wanna hit.

what about when you hit the flank of a unit with a slight angle, not corner-corner but slightly off, you'll probably hit 2 models per rank, sometimes

*shrug maybe I should try out the thing a few more times before I offer advice...

I use the bases as the targets and where you start range from. Otherwise you get guys who 'convert' their dragons with 50" necks that can reach you with breath weapons.

I use a wooden (dow?) rod. It is about 3 feet long and a 1/4 inches wide. I've had to use this because when measuring who was under the bolt line with a measuring tape my opponent would grab hold of the tape at the front an "bend" the tape to where before I had 5 models hitting I would now onlt hit 2 - 3 (no ref or judge present). Just make sure the rod is straight.

It doesn't matter if you hit a unit on a flank/angle,it's still only one model or rank. If you get a flank shot you can go right across the whole rank and hit every model.
It's in WD#259 and I'm sure a WHF annual.

when you hit a unit in the flank, the ranks become files and the files become ranks, so the effect is the same as hitting them in the front.
btw, i was kidding about looking for a wide ruler to measure with.
i haven't used my wlc in months, its a bit TOO unreliable.
