The pre-dawn light showed a vision of hell. Bodies lie scattered about the meadow and piled up on the fields. A farmstead stood despite the damage it had sustained, little more than a charred husk. The smoke from nearby fires, still raging out of control, hung like a blanket on the land, smothering the small gathering near the burned out farm house. Grey Seer Verminous Fang was whispering to the famed assassin Thrask Vilepaw while Warlord Arqueek shifted nervously and peered into the shadows. The warlord could only guess what vital mission the Grey Seer could be sending the assassin to do, and couldn't help but wonder if he could have been drawn here to be the intended target. Callused hands rubbed thoughtfully against his sword hilt as the two conspirators continued to talk. The warlord became more agitated by the second, recalling the rumors that Verminous Fang had close ties with the adepts of clan Eshin and had even ordered the death of Varqueek, though others claim it was Lord Morrskar. The Warlord's thoughts were interupted by a sound, and he cursed himself for daydreaming at such a crucial moment. The assassin had vanished, apparently on some errand in the city of Hergig. The grey seer looked at Arqueek, and chuckled at his unease, which infuriated the warlord even more. "The components you brought were much-much needed. Project Supremacy is almost ready for a test, so says Shiva. Assist us in the the man-thing warrens, and the Horned Rat will find favor for you. Or leave, though you will not-not impress the Lords of Decay. Many man-things are ready to join us in the Under Empire. Much-much warpstone can they dig. Rich-rich we shall all be, yes?" His discomfort eased by the prospect of fortune, the Warlord simply snarled and moved off to his troops. The grey seer watched him leave with a slight smile, knowing that the warlord could never turn down the offer of easy fortune. Warlord Arqueek would add his clan to the assault on Hergig, and Verminous Fang would, once again, get the glory for taking a city of the man-things. Let him take a few slaves. There would be plenty more in the times ahead. Verminous Fang stood immobile until the last of the warlord's troops disappeared from sight, then he jumped into the jittery, hyperactive nature of most Skaven. He called forth his advisors and began to set in motion the test of the great weapon known only as Project Supremacy. The Warlock Engineer Shiva assured the grey seer that it could destroy an entire city in a single blow, as though the Horned Rat reached out and touched the world, devouring the weak, and mutating the strong into slaves of the Skaven race. "When will we get the final piece? What is the delay?" Warlock Engineer Shiva simply shrugged, far too complacent for a proper spell caster in Verminous Fang's mind. A proper spell caster needs to control every aspect of fate, lest fate controls him. These warlocks, however, seem to simply accept what the winds of magic deliver. It is almost as infuriating as the philosophy held the idiots in Clan Eshin picked up in Cathay. "Warpstone is coming. Patience, Grey Seer. Patience." Containing a snarl, the grey seer turned his back on the warlock, ignoring the chittering made by Wilhelm. "We need to proceed quick-quick! Hergig will fall-fall soon. Then it is too late to test the weapon. We need-need living subjects!" "It will happen as the Horned Rat wishes, Grey Seer." At that, Wilhelm jumped from his perch upon the grey seer's staff and bit Verminous Fang in the ear. All assembled turned to look as the grey seer yelped, and at that time they noticed the warband. Marauders were rifling through the fields, picking over the bodies for anything that looked valuable. One looked up at the farmhouse, now back lit by the rising sun, and shouted a cry to his companions. Verminous Fang quickly sent Shiva away with the weapon and called to his troops for protection from his sometimes allies. The marauders looked upon the gathering horde and called out to their general in voices muffled by the still settling smoke. The warriors of chaos gathered and surged forward, eager to get rid of this nuisance so that they can get back to looting the dead. The grey seer barely acknowledged the wizard across the field, and supresses his greatest efforts with barely a thought. A group of jezzails sent to protect Clan Skryre's interest in Project Supremacy opened fire, though the lack of preparation surely affected them, as many felt their weapons fail to fire, and one was wounded when his long rifle back-fired. The warlocks and the grey seer were the rulers of the battle field, with virtually no one to counter their efforts. Warlock Thrish't set his Accumulator to maximum and unleashed a great and terrifying bolt of lightning, singing himself and damaging his equipment in such a way that it would be useless until he could take the time to repair it. Krit'titch, however, decimated a unit of marauders, and their screams could be felt as well as heard. The men fled from a mass of skaven, unaware that this was just the advance, the slaves whose intnet was to draw out their lines. The marauders ran too slowly, and the slaves took vengeance for all the wrongs the world had given them, ripping the men to shreds. On the flank, three Rat Ogres, led by packmaster from clan Moulder, began to outmaneuver the enemy, accompanied by a unit of clanrats and the self named citizen levies of Zundap (bolstered with night goblins and the ever grim Mau'rauth), who marched forward, following Hans Gruyden with grim determination written on their features. Finally facing an opponent they actually wanted to fight, they would let none stand in their way. The men of the North stood resolutely, and faced a combine charge from the men of ZUndap and the Rat Ogres of clan moulder. The giant rats tore through the armor of the chaos warriors faster than the northeners could react. Facing certain death at the claws of these monstrosities and the men accompanying them, the chaos warriors fled, with rat ogres tearing them apart as they ran. The center saw problems for the grey seer, as the warriors of chaos formed a line and began to beat down the clanrats. One of the warpfire throwers caught fire, and the smell of burnt warpstone fuel filled the air as the team surrendered to their instincts and ran, before the barrel containing the lethal concoction finally blew. Verminous Fang took a deep breath as he gathered the winds of magic and exhaled upon the knights, the magic infused breath of the seer felled two of the mighty warriors. Thrish't attempted to follow up this success by throwing one of the Death Globes he carries, though his aim insured that the globe drifted off harmlessly. The knights faced off against more moulder beasts, cutting through them as easily as a warm knife through butter. Seeing the main thrust of the battle working to his advantage, Grey Seer Verminous Fang walked resolutely from the field of battle, intent on ensuring that Project Supremacy would not be endangered by his absence. With even more bodies strewn across the once peaceful meadow, the remaining warpfire thrower took aim and let loose a ferocious amount of warpfire, burning the chaos knights, who could not bear the sight of one of their own being incinerated alive and fled the field. With victory in sight, the Rat Ogres and the clanrats charged the last remaining unit of chaos warriors on the field. The raiders of the northern wastes could not hold against that combined assasult and fled, and though they escaped, the skaven had won the field. Thrish't, still smelling of ozone and burning brass, caught up with the grey seer. "Oh, great Verminous Fang, shall you not take-take slaves in this latest battle? Many man-things are captured." "Kill-kill them all. They are not man-things, they are twisted. They carry the pride of the chaos gods. The wil not fight-fight for us. The threat of mutation is lost on them." "They shall die-die, Grey Seer. I shall see that none survive." With that, the engineer returned to the blood soaked field and began to execute the prisoners, one by one. |

Don't cry, it was actually pretty close. I won it in turn 6, with 2 events. Before that, he was the clear winner (don't bother adding up points kind of winner). His large block of Slaaneshi chaos warriors were broken by clanrats and Rat Ogres. He lost by 2 and rolled a 10 for the break test. If they had stayed (we did the math there, just out of curiosity) it would have been a draw. The other thing was that the WFT caused his general in a unit of undivided chaos knights to panic. He rolled really badly there, but I didn't feel bad. Why? A brief look at my dice rolls... Pre game, rolling for spells for the grey seer: Skitterleap, 4 times. Yep, the infamous 4 1's strikes again. (I ended up with skitterleap, warplightning, pestilent breath and death frenzy)Turn 1. WE miscasts, result 12 (IF, but the model no longer counts as a Wizard). Rolls a 1 and 2 for the number of hits. Three jezzails roll 1's to hit, one killing himself. Turn 2. The other WE miscasts, taking a wound. 3more 1's from the jezzails (though none killed themselves. Turn 3. It's hard to miscast when you have so few spells going off, but a WFT blew up and again 2 jezzails rolled 1's to hit. After that, the dice did normalize, but I did rally a unit of slaves with double 1's. It was a really fun game. Fluffwise, I think I'm going to play up the differences between the grey seers and the Warlocks. It just seems to me that someone who trains like a seer wouldn't like someone who takes the "easy" way out and simply grafts equipment to their bodies, and they might even feel threatened by the upstarts. |
