In my years of playing Skaven, I've never had a use for Storm Vermin, I always just stuck with the good old clanrats. So I was wondering, if any of you have used them, how are they? I might through a bunch in if I hear enough good things.

Well, I've played with a unit of 20 (3 ranks) and given them the Umbanner... then stuck both a Chieftain with Sacred Standard o` Horned Rat... then also had them push my Screaming Bell around (in the second ranks of course)... It almost never got into combat (the enemy avoided that one!) and when it did it kicked A$$... I've heard a lot of people saying they're too expensive, but heck... something THAT hard, for skaven it's worth it!
When you think everything is going your way- some little snot-nosed brat gets in the way and ruins your day. This little punk does something so simple that completely destroys any chance of you having a good year. This SoB didn't even know that their actions would have such an abysmal impact upon your life. Geez, some people are so insensitive.

Now I have to get my car repaired.

I had something like that in mind, though I would use the Banner of Burning Hatred instead. I like it better

I love Storm Vermin. I use 20 in all battles above 1000 points. they do great things. for only 8 or 9 points they're not too expensive. Sitck a Chieftain in there with BoP. Give them a warbanner. You have a pretty beafy 300 point unit.

That unit has rarely faled me. Yesterday I had it maul Borgut's Black ork Bodyguard with him in it.

Not a bad plan. I may have to try that at some time.

awesome save so they tend to live longer than clanrats, and that WS keeps them from getting hit as often from elves and such. plus, they look intimidating and can cause your opponent to get distracted from that little night runner pack squeezing through his lines. against orcs and dwarves they're de rigeur.

Hey all,

Thoughts on Stormvermin.
Don't they just attract unwanted missile/magic damage? Can a unit of 30 clanrats and associated slaves do the same job? Apart from how they look, which is so cool, i just can't justify the points investment.

Please convince me otherwise

stormvermin are actually quite powerful if you have a larger regiment of them (25+) if you then equip them with a warpfire thrower or ratling gun and have a skirmish screen of night runner in front they do not get attacked by too much missile fire so when they get into combat they will be near full streangth

I always use a 28 unit of stormvermin with a warbanner, a cheiftain with the sacred standard of the horned rat, and Rattsu, my combat kitted warlord. (30 models in total)

They kick ass!

I usually use the banner of burning harted for the monks, and almost never the umbranner. Rarely faces missile heavy troops, and when they do they often targets jezzails, rat ogres and small stuff rather than trying to decimate the horde.

Stormvermin can do two three things that clanrats can not do:

1: they have heavy armour. When they use hand weapon and shield they have a VERY respectable 3+ save in close combat. Vital to save a few and get a positive combat resolution against elite troops.

2: they have WS4 which means that they hit normal troops easier, and are slightly harder to hit for example swordsmen and greatswords and dwarves and marauders.

3: they can take a magic banner of their own.

I almost never uses the halberds.

*grins* I've mauled ironbreakers, chosen chaos warriors, giants, and once a high elf lord on a dragon.

They can stand up to pretty much anything with a bit of luck and a shiny scary banner.

And they are about the only really nasty combar regiment that Skaven can have...

The thing that works the best is that people rarely expect it... and even when they have got used to it it is very effective for scary purposes...

i'm not a fan of stormvermin.. they always get the utmost attention of my enemy in theirt magic and shooting phase. i also don't like the idea that their is actually a unit capable of killing very heavy troops and still are just normal skaven but a bit stronger...

Then again i fielded a few times but i think they are a bit too expensive.. they die almost as easy as clanrats to shooting and magic...
