Can be found on the SoC boards as well: http://stormofchaos.ne.games-workshop.com/...=204&ID=3259508 This battle-report is a follow-up on my last one (the first in the two at the "previous battle-reports"). In that one I defeated a dwarf army in the skirmish scenario of Cut The Bridges and gained a beach-head near Struhelspan, but the dwarfs are coming back. And so we chose to do a Storm The Barricades scenario... here it comes! Previous battle-reports: ======================== http://stormofchaos.ne.games-workshop.com/...=204&ID=3254442 http://stormofchaos.ne.games-workshop.com/...=204&ID=3249742 ====== Storm the Barricades Skirmish scenario Attacking Force (dwarfs): veteran ranger, light armour, great weapon 6 rangers, light armour, great weapon 2 rangers, light armour, great weapon, throwing axes Total: 128 pts (we agreed these 3 points shouldn't be bothered about that much) Models: 9 Defending Force (skaven): Lord Vinshqueek (counts as fangleader), heavy armour, halberd 3 stormvermin, heavy armour, halberd 13 clanrats, light armour, handweapon, shield 6 slaves, handweapon 6 giant rats + packmaster, light armour, handweapon, whip Total: 149 pts Models: 30 Pre-game thoughts: ------------------ I not only had to outnumber my opponent horrible, but also needed to face their fighting potential. Knowing that with night-fight range was halved, so I could expect some serious fighting power instead of only shooting! I took a bunch of slaves to start building and exchanged my plague monks for giant rats (they weren't skirmish so could be taken :D)... with the set-up I saw a 9 vs. 30 battle and let out a small "phew". He only had rangers! So, on to the report... ====== Goff checked the dark... for a long while he and his kinsmen smelled the Skaven, their foul stinking musk could be noticed for a mile away. A few survivors of an out-of-the-way patrol came in with the report of Skaven. These foul rat-thing creatures had killed dwarfs, proud and stout dwarfs! The survivors had delivered their handgun and weapons to the runesmiths and went towards Karak-Kadrin to fullfil their vow to die nobly in battle. He was proud on the lads, but felt sorry since a small millenia of fighting knowledge had died there. And the leader, his brother Grungi had died out there. And that had to be avenged! Lord Vinshqueek overlooked his horde... the clan Pestilence brothers went towards the main fighting. But here he had a small conclave from clan Moulder. They had sent a young Moulder with several giant rats. The slaves of Vinshqueek scurried off to start the earthworks. Grey Seer Verminous Fang was at the same moment digging his tunnel and their earthworks need to be finished soon as possible to act as a rallying point. But Vinshqueek hadn't become a warlord without being cautious and sent out half of his pack of clanrats to act as sentries. As soon as danger came upon them they would be warned! Goff looked out through the dark, and noticed that several Skaven sentries were coming towards their direction. He let his kin take up hidden places to advance without being detected. They would hit one side and sweep along the rest of the foul horde. Vinshqueek kicked one of the slaves in the butt to make him work harder... the first earthworks were coming together and if this was going in this speed, they would be getting a great spot. Maybe they could build a small sort of fort here in praise of the Horned Rat. Vinshqueek would then be noticed as a greater and better Skaven and would surely rise in status! Yes-yes, this was a good place for battle! His clanrat sentries hadn't report in yet, but somewhere his senses were warning him. Things were going wrong somewhere... and he couldn't see what! The first axe flew through the air and hit home... the Skaven stood still for a moment, but then slowly dropped to the ground. This was the signal to advance quicker and Goff let his rangers in a tight formation towards the barricades. Vinshqueek's intuition got confirmed when a clanrat near him got an axe imbedded in his head. Instinctively he ducked away, and his stormvermin guard readied themselves to take up the charge. Vinshqueek sent his clanrats off to charge the place were the axes came from and let out a giant squeek to alert the rest of the Skaven. Goff knew he was facing fearsome odds, he was outnumbered but at the moment his group could take the rats running towards them one on one. Several axes flew towards the oncoming rats but only one hit, letting the rat flying backwards through the air. The rat were very fast with their weapons but Goff's rangers made short notice of dispatching them. Vinshqueek kept his urge in check to squirt the musk of fear... the dwarfs at the bridge were a disaster, but these were worse! They looked lighter armoured, but were a real killing machine. At this point the sentries were running back to support the remaining force. The clan Moulder rats leaped in the fray and solely ran towards two dwarf-things, giving Vinshqueek's stormvermin guard the opportunity to take on some others. Vinshqueek looked towards the slaves working the butt off, and noticed they were a long way now. Propably about 50 paces about now! Goff hacked and slashed the onward rats away, but these small blighters were stubborn! Next to him he saw Zaki taken down, by the sheer number of 3 stormvermin hacking at him. Their happy chittering was short of doom since they were taken quickly themselves afterwards. The clanrats jumped in were the stormvermin just fell, and overswarmed the first dwarf-thing the found killing him instantly by stabbing and bitings. At this point some slaves were trying to run off, getting scared of the rampaging dwarfs but Vinshqueek cut the firsts head off and reminding the Skaven of the long time he would take to kill them should they still want to try it. That should keep them going, he thought. He watched the clanrats immediately diving towards the next dwarf-thing and Vinshqueek followed them up. Turn 6: With a headbutt at the first rat jumping towards his head Goff grabbed a new one to break its small neck. This seemed to give the leader of this "pack" the moment it had seem to wait for and he lashed out with his whip towards Goff. The whip hit him around the hand in which he hold the rat a moment ago. Next to him fierce fighting happened, he saw dwarfs going down one by one simply because they didn't had the numbers. Vinshqueek chittered gleefully, knowing the Skaven would once again destroy the eager dwarf-things. Already four dwarf-things had fallen and he took down the fifth with one stroke of his trusty halberd. This seemed to be too much for the dwarfs and one by one they were retreating... the giant rats followed them up, but the battle was won by the Skaven. --> skaven victory... Post-game thoughts: ------------------- Right... scratch my notice, rangers are a horror when used right! The dwarves were extremely lucky with my lack of a good roll to wound in the 4th turn. 6 clanrats dispatched like that, I hadn't got a normal "Skavenish" close combat round and already lost a third of my force at that moment! Luckily for me I could keep them at bay long enough to finish of my earthworks (got to love the numbers) and so won the match. Reminder? Yes, OVERSWARM THEM! Never, ever am I going to take dwarfs one on one again. Stupid action! Post-mortem bit: ---------------- Vinshqueek overlooked the little beach-head they created and let out a gasp. Those slaves might be useless runts, but they made a better thing than he'd expected... now onto that fort, how much banner of his clan could he hang around it... |

Go forth my brethren, that we shall nibble at the roots of the old world! We are the rats in the shadows. We hold the blades of corruption, aimed at the very heart of the Old World. We are The Council of Thirteen. Second place in the UnderEmpire painting competition! | |

Thanks... me and my dwarf-opponent have so much fun in this that we'll link more and more skirmishes together. First was Cut the Bridges, second was Storm the Barricades. Now we got that little tower, so Silence the Watchtower is next and who knows... maybe a townraid, and let my "own" place grow! Greetz |
