Hey, i need some help. :( I regularly play an empire line up with plenty of artillery and cavalry. I curreently have: clanrats, slaves, night runners/gutter runners, plague monks 2 rat ogres 2 ratling guns, WLC and rat swarms. Should I next buy Stormvermin? or something else. Whatever i should buy, how many?
THX :D

The best way for you to get good advice is to post his army list, and then yours. But I'll make a few assumptions on both parts, and see what we can do.

This sounds like a classic Empire gunline. Let me guess... 2 great cannons, 2 hellblasters, 1 mortar, 1 unit of IC knights, and 1 unit of knights, 2 units of 10 handgunners with a marksman each (sometimes set up as detachments).

And you have 2 units of clanrats, 2 of slaves plague monks, 2 rat ogres in 1 unit and 4 swarms plus the rattling guns and WLC? What hero choices do you have? Well, to really crack open the knights, plague censor bearers are key. Use your swarms to tie up the knights while the PCBs attack (preferably in the flank). They can really smash knight units on the charge (especially if he uses just 1 rank).

Also, I'm a big fan of warpfire throwers, especially against Empire, with their average leadership of 7, they fail as many panic checks as they pass (on average).

To deal with artillery, first thing is to minimize its effectiveness. Do this by restricting his LoS in such a way that he can only see slaves. I like the long line of slaves, 20 across and 1 deep. This blocks LoS to your good units, and prevents the templates from hitting enough to cause a panic check in turn 1, and they may survive intact after turn 2 (by intact, I mean they haven't paniced). This, of course, can be dictated by terrain. Don't bottleneck yourself in difficult terrain.

Well, that's a start. Hope that helps. :D

Cool thx. I normally take an assassin with weeping blade in the same unit as the sacred standard, a plague priest, and, sometimes a grey seer w/o SB. Should I get anything else to counter his infantry? (he has a few hard hitting units at the expese of some artillary about 50% of the time. BTW, with the under cover of darkness rule, cane the eshin see? or do they have to roll too? It makes sense if they can see perfectly, being eshin and all

In the eshin list, both sides are affected the same.

I commonly face Empire and have won 4/5 of the time I would say.

1,000 pts empire 9 huntsmen, 10 archers, 10 crossbow, 16 handgunners, cannon, 19 spearmen with a L 2 wizzard leading with 2 dispell scrolls usually (hates WL), 5 IC Knights with a Captain leading.

My army is 25 CR with std and music and the WFT, 24 monks with full command and umbranner led by a PP armed with flail, supported by 6 censors, 20 slaves, 3 rat packs, 6 tunnelers with poison hand weapons and black skaven, and a warlock with storm deamon and dispell scroll.

The tunnelers can take out one regiment of shooters and the cannon pretty easily and the T4 monks with umbranner shrug off all but cannonballs pretty easy (mortars and fireballs as well are much less threatening). I know his empire list isnt great (its actually my spare army consisting of the starter box plus old Battlemasters figures that work great that I loaned to a friend to teach him so he gets hooked on the game too)

Some people swear by Jezzails and Globadiers, I love Warplightning and Warpfire and Plague Censers and they nail his cavalry every time. As skaven, the magic phase is usually your friend (especially against empire) so use that to your advantage. Warpscroll is devestating for infantry, S3 hit on each model, against 20 strong unit it usually kills about 8 or so average, great for 30 pts.

Must have a unit of stormvermin. They are underrated by some ratkin, 'coz they do not see potential. Here's a unit that can actually stand up even to chaos warriors, 25 Stormvermin, Full Command, War Banner, Chieftain w/ Skaven Brew, heavy armor and shield, cost total: 351pts. Try-try some time eh? #gs#
