Well, all i can say is, i won with a little( a lot) of luck. With the army i had, i ended up playing against The army of sylvania count list. Note: not very good at battle reports :\ It had: a 22 strong black knight unit: The entire front rank was almost all characters, im not kidding(2 vamp lords, and a wight lord) 2 black coaches 2 bat swarms 2 banshees 1 thrall 10 grave guard 22 dire wolves(one of 17 and one of 5) sylvanian miltia and....4 grave markers.(yeah, his army was smaller than mine )So we set up, in the middle is a little village(orc huts? you know, the one) with a forest on one side of it, and some low walls that counted as light cover. well after deployment, i felt confident that i could cover each side of the attacking force. Turn 1 We rolled, and i got the first turn. After moving to defensive positions on the map i skitterleaped my 2 engineers to the other edge of the forest behind his dire wolves(scouts in sylvania). He tried to dispel but to no avail, each nibbling on their warpstone chunks, they killed 12 of the 17 dire wolves. Trying to finish the job, one of them attempted to lob a death globe...but...ummm he must have just realized his shoe was untied and droped the globe at his feet. But thankfully, he messed up making this one and it was a dud. The bell tolled, the unit with it was stubborn. Not liking the loss of his fast cavalry, he charged with his huge unit of black Knights. Doing what any sensible skaven would do, the engineer he could reach fled. On the other side of the board how every he had some deployment issues. About half of his army was not with in 18" of his general....so they couldnt march towards me. Well his turn to cast. I make sure the 2 grave markers on my side dont raise any...unwanted guests. He tries to cast dans macrebe(sp?) on his knight unit...dispelled....invocation...dispelled...and that was that. Turn 2 The engineer fleeing rallies(through out the game i rolled marvelously on break tests ). The rest of my forces move in defensive positions... Well after rallying i think its time to fry the knights... however, no such luck, the one of the vampire lords had an item to give them magic resistance 1. So only one knight died this turn from magic. Preparing for the coming combat, a unit of slaves was frenzied, along with a unit of night runners. the bell tolled. All cavalry unit had to take a leadership test. 1 knight(2 down...20 to go) Trying again to kill the engineers(and make it through the forest i had lured him into) he charges. The other flees. He attempts to redirect, but to no avail. More movement on the other side. Magic, he is shut out again. Turn 3 Finally in position i ready my self for some shooting. The frenzied night runners move up to the center of the board, preparing for a rear or flank. My frenzied slaves also move up. Magic: Alot better this time, 5 knights.(7 down 15 to go) just out of range for plague, but still in the forest.... Sensinng a coming charge, the assassin activates his bands of power(i swapped this and a warpstone ammy for the warpstone stars) Shooting: Now this was painful. Warplightning cannon shot, only str 4, hits his general, the wight lord, and 3 other knights. Wight lord is killed, general takes 1(3 left), and 2 knights die(bad rolling on his part).(9 down 13 to go) Second warplightning cannon shot. Misfire. I roll, its a six. Now this warplightning cannon is the the center of my army. It could hit just about anything.... :ph43r:. I roll for scatter. The horned rat must have been with me. The direction goes through some slaves...ok...right past a warpfire thrower, a nightruner unit, and a clan rat unit. It hits, a bat swarm, 4 dire wolves, and a vampire thrall! all hits killed. Third warplightning cannon shot. Misfire. its gone. warplock jezails aim throught the forest and fire. 4 hits. 2 on his general, 2 on knights. the general(who has the carstein ring) takes 2 more(1 left) and 2 more knights go down.(11 down 11 to go). The bell tolls... 13 :). None of the knights die :((missed by one) 2 grave guard, about 10 skeletons, and the remaining dire wolves. His knights charge again. And again i flee. He is almost out of the forest. But he cannot redirect. A black coach charges my clan rat unit. :ph43r: :rolleyes: Magic, he manages to summon some skeletons from the graves on my side. ![]() He regenerates 2 wounds(back at 3). Invocation is denied. Hellish vigor and dans macarbe(sp?) as well. combat. My assassin in the clan rat unit reveals himself, bands of power glowing. Now i personally like to believe something awesome just happens here, like he dives under the coach and cuts the front 2 wheels off and kills the wraith, but oh well. 3 hits one is poison, and 2 wounds. Black coach, saves none. Turn 4 My engineers, rally. My frenzied units, charge the unit of skeles.(rear'd and charged) Magic. Man this time it really hurts.4 warplightnings are cast on the black Knights(1 storm daemon, 2 engineers, and 1 grey seer) In the end, both The general is down to -2, his other vamp lord is taken to 1, and 5 more knights die.(16 down, 6 to go) Then plague. general is at -3, and another knight falls (17 down and 5 to go)The jezzails are then frenzied. Bands of power. Shooting. A ratling gun opens up, hoping to hurt/kill an incoming unit of sylvanian levy. 11 shots...and a misfire :(. Its a double 4. It whirls around and ends up backwards. The 11 shots pour into...slaves 8 are cut down.The WFT fries a bat swarm from behind cover. The assassin tries to kill a banshee. 2 hits...needing only 2's, i roll double ones ![]() Another ratling gun opens up on the Black Knights. Nothing. A warp lightning cannon fires. str=6. The general takes 2 more(-5)and the other lord is killed! wanting to finish the black knights the remaining warplightning cannon opens up. Misfire. It explodes in a poof of green smoke. The bell tolls. All my units have hatred :). Combat(first of the game!) The skeletons are massacred by slavering slaves and night runners. They over run into another unit of skeles. But they open themselves up to another black coach.(flank) His general...cannot regenerate that many wounds. None of the Bk's die, about 2 grave guard, and 10 skeletons.His black coach charges the frenzied slaves, his black knights finally make it into combat against my jezzails(who have frenzy and hatred) And a 25(originally 35!...ahem ok so i let some of the grave markers slip :P) strong unit of skeletons(heavy armor and halberds...) charges a clan rat unit. magic, i shut him out.(he has just grave markers anyways )His banshee attempts to kill my assassin but her scream only reduces him to one(thanks to the warp stone ammy) The coach breaks the slaves, and over runs into night runners. The skeletons kill none, lose 4 in return. CR takes 7, making the unit 14. The black knights kill the unit of jezzails losing only one in return(stand and shoot) (18 down 4 to go)and over run into my clan rat unit with a screaming bell. Fortunately for me, he exposed his flank in doing so. turn 5 My bsb(whom i gave the cheaper banner of the swarm to) leads 25 clan rats into the flank of the black knights. Magic: My second grey seer frenzies the bsb's unit. The other tries to frenzy it's unit but miscasts(no more spells this turn) An engineer takes out 8(!) more grave guard. Bands of power Shooting: the WFT opens up. 9 of the skeletons remaining burn. My assassin kills the banshee. bell tolls...nothing useful. Combat: The black coach defeats and runs down my night runners. It will soon meet up with the Black knight battle.(about 14 inches away) The rest of the skeletons are killed. The black knights kill 3. I kill none. i win :). CR kills them. The black coach charges into the units. It kills 2. it takes none( its has like...ALOT OF WOUNDS right now) Turn 6 The rest of my army moves over to the last remaining combat. Magic: the engineer kills 5 more grave guard. Shooting. My second unit of jezzails snipes a grave guard My warp lightning cannon powers up. 36"(!!!) str 8!. Hits all that he has left. Seriously. sure....there were some casualtis...about 5 clanrats but ehh. so thats it.So i realize, that alot of luck was involved here, and also what i was playing against. Had i played any other army, i feel i would have had trouble :\. also, i believe personally that pooring all your points into one unit is a good way to get it killed. VICTORY! Edit: Forgot. My gutter runners...finally on turn 5 they come up...but its a misfire. my opponent places the marker on the farthest table edge from combat.

A few minor points. A hidden assassin can't activate the bands of power (sorry!). The black coach is a chariot, so I think it's immune to poison (it should say so in the unit description). Is a Vampire a Large target? Or perhaps larger than a mounted unit? The reason I ask is that you can't target a same sized character in a unit with magic or missile weapons (WLC is different). But I don't know VC at all, so it's possible that this was perfectly legal. Also, just out of curiosity, why did you fenzy the jezzails? That seems to me to be one unit you don't want to charge into combat. Other than that, well played! You may be saying that you owe a lot to luck, but that's the way that Skaven work.

As for how he was wounded, we decided to randomize hits.(1-3 is character, 4-6 BK) then again for the character. well, i frenzied the jezzails because i knew they would get charged in his turn :\. Since charges and movement had already been declared, cant they shoot? as for the poison thing, well yeah i guess that makes since, but then that would have still been one wound he didnt save....but with out the bands of power...hmmm |

It's in the Q&A, which can be found in the Chronicles 2004, page 117, close to the bottom of the center column. I'm trying to find a link to the online Q&A, but GW's running slow right now.
Well, as long as you both agreed. Normally, if a character is in a unit of 5 or more same sized models, you can't pick him out. Templates would still hit as normal (and this includes the WLC), but he'd get a "Look out, sir!" roll, which if passed allows the character to live (at the expense of a rank and file model). Under 5 rank and file models, then you can randomize. |

ack. I havent really looked at many of the chronicles...oh well. As for the randomizing thing, i think we'll probably use that more often. Makes...more sense in my mind. |

well considdering most of the front rank was characters it should be okay. usually i play that if theres a character in the back he's safe, in the front you randomize (6 is character, 1-5 unit). |
