The Grey Seer Verminous Fang wiped ash from his fur as he surveyed the burning wreck of Zundap. A last ditch effort by the man-things was gathering in a part of the town that had evaded destruction, finding from somewhere a large amount of artillery. The Grey Seer could see 2 of the Empire's great cannons, a mortar, and 2 of the devices that looked like rattling guns. He silently sneered at those weak and uninspired versions of a Skryre mark of genious. He could also see some of the man-things as they prepared to defend the town from it's rightful owners. Spearmen, swordsmen, rabble picked up from whever they lay, and some of those gunmen. The Grey Seer could sense the subtle changes in the winds of magic which meant that the man-things had managed to find some wizards to help out, but they were puny things, not worthy of consideration. Yes, the man-things will die-die on this day! The Plague Priest Kree'totch mustered his pestilens troops, the fanatical censor bearers mad with disease and foaming at the mouth. The moulder packmasters were snapping their whips, goading their charges into their formations, the giant rats occasionally offered bites and scratches at their handlers, who deftly avoided all such distractions. The eshin adepts called Nightrunners crept along the battle lines, hiding behind a small wooded area. The clanrats pushed their lesser breathren ahead of them, and as the slaves took their positions in front of the cannons, Verminous Fang could smell the musk of fear. He smiled delightedly at the thought of all those cannons hitting nothing but worthless slaves. The Skryre adepts moved into position, checking that the warpfire throwers were in good working order and adjusting their own ability to gather the winds of magic within their arcane equipment. Yes, this would be a great victory for the grey seer! With a great yell, Grey Seer Verminous Fang commanded the attack to begin, and the ranks of Skaven surged forth, pouring through the woods and determined to bring death to the man-things, the great press of bodies encouraging the forces of the Skaven to acts of courage. They did not faulter as the first cannon shots soared over their heads, they did not despair as the mortar killed clanrats. They did not stagger as the grey seer found himself unable to encourage his slaves into fits of frenzy, but they did exalt at the corruscating green lights as Skritch filled the enemies ranks with warplightning, and as Thrish't also burned the man-things with raw unleashed magic. Again, the cannons fired, killing many. Again the mortar pounded the advancing horde, though the engineers failed to account for the wind as the shot deviated wildly. Again, the handgunners opened fire. But all was for naught. A group of mounted pistoliers were run down by a group of giant rats. A group of handgunners fled before the advance of the night runners. Then the Grey Seer saw the earth tremble behind the man-things, and a small group of night runners jumped out of a newly created hole, shifting all attention over to them. Perfect! He gathered his power about himself and dissappeared in a cloud of smoke. He found himself behind a building and, more importantly, behind the man-things. He waved his arms and squeeked softly, summoning forth a great swarm of rats, who surged forth, finding their way under the armor of the man-things, biting and clawing and chewing and all the while their chittering could be heard over the screams of pain and disgust of the man-things. Deciding that his position was too good to waste, Verminous Fang then brought forth the full might of the Lords of Decay, and danced with glee as the man-things began to whither and die. Even this was not enough, as he then broke the seal on the scroll he prepared for just such an occasion, and decimated yet another regiment of the man-things. He was still dancing and capering about when the thunder-bolt fell from the sky, and only just managed to flee the scene with the help of his skitterleap, though it must have appeared to observers that he had been killed. The disappearence of the Grey Seer went unnoticed among the horde, as they continued their assault, eventually destroying the man-things. Jubilant over their victory, the clanrats began buring the village and chanting in their high-pitched squeeking voices. Verminous Fang returned to the now pillaged battlefield, and grinned to see the effect his victory had on the clanrats who chose to follow him. "Zundap is ours! Gather the slaves, quick-quick! Tonight we shall sacrifice them to the Horned Rat, then feast upon the foodstuffs of the man-things!" A great and terrifying cheer rose up from the assembled horde. More adventures of Grey Seer Verminous Fang to come! |

OK, so how about a news paper interview? This is ace reporter Wilhelm R Hurst, at the scene of Zundap, which has just been over run by a group of "Skaven", which I ahve been "informed" are not anything like beastmen, despite being a cross of man and rat. I sat down with one of the invading generals, who offered to spare my life in return for this interview. This reporter was intrigued, to say the least. The general is named Verminous Fang, and holds the office of "Grey Seer", a mingling of politician, priest, and wizard. Hurst: Mr Fang, we are all wondering what your purpose in Zundap is? Fang: Hi, Mom! Oh, wait is this televised? Hurst: Huh? What's that? Fang: Oh, right, I forgot that you puny man-things aren't blessed by the Horned Rat with the knowledge of the future. All I can say in the matter is, "prepare for your DOOM!" Oh, anyways, you asked about our purpose in Zundap? Right, we heard about the steam mill. We want to convert it into a Skavenade brewery quick-quick. All shall be blessed with the nectar of the Horned Rat, and then we shall pray very quietly in a stupor for days. Hurst: You mean you're all going to get drunk on this "Skavenade" and then pass out? Fang: Well, you could put it that way. Hurst: What was the abttle like? Fang: I'm going to tell you something only a soldier can tell you honestly... That was the most fun I've ever had! Well, except that a thunderbolt singed my fur. But I made such carnage! Plagues, warpfire, swarms of rats, warpfire, warplightning, <The bizarre rat was making sound effect noises at this point - ed.>, cannons, warpfire!!! Did you know that I'm quite fond of warpfire? Hurst: I had guessed as much. What are you plans now? Fang: Oh, after the Skavenade? Umm, well, it's kind of a secret... Oh, heck, we're going to destroy a bridge! And then kill-kill more man-things! And then get more warpfire! I really like warpfire... Hurst: Yes, I believe you mentioned that... What do you intend to do with the survivors? Fang: We plan on instituting a new "jobs for the jobless" plan which includes benefits such as regular meals, plenty of exercise, and the occasional trip back to your homelands. Hurst: Meaning? Fang: Slavery. You'll be worked half to death in our warpstone mines before being shoved in front of your own cannons. But, hey! At least we aren't chaos! They'd put your skull in a throne or some such nonsense! Hurst: Right. Well, I thank you for your time, but... Fang: You're cutting me off!!!! That's it! Hurst: <unrecognizable chittering - it appears he's been transformed into a rat, and I'm getting the heck out of here - ed.> |

Well, Wilhelm R Hurst is a total rip-off (William Randolf Hurst, the guy that was the media at the turn of the 20th century). And I think he has a nice job as a pet rat (maybe he'll be loading the warpstone shot into the Warlock Engineer's pistol - I already have the model ).But maybe the Grey Seer will keep him around as an "archivist". |
