she's taken a liking to the bretonnians and i'm teaching her the basic rules and such, but if any of you are experienced with brets and can offer some basic tips, i'd appreciate it.

do they have any relatively bad units like our rat ogres?
besides kotr, are there other must-include-every-time units?
lore: life or beasts?
efficient unit sizes?
useful virtues and magic items?

i've been to a few bret sites, but i can't tell how truly knowledgeable some of them are and for some reason, i trust the people here more... very unskavenish...

we'll mostly be playing 1500 pt battles while she builds up her army.

I played them in the old rules, but I know that the main thing for them is get into lance formation and CHARGE!!!!!
Grail knights are good.

a paladin battle standard bearer is also essential to the army, he cant be general. that is why bretonnians have an extra slot for heroes.

units of KOTR are obviously essential and mounted eomen kick ass.
grail knights are really good but in 2000 you should also save a slot for the trebuchet. I don't like the damsels so much since they aren't the best mages in the game (not nearly close enough to Warlock Engineers;)) and I'd almost alwys chose bret lords or paladins over them. mabey include 1 as dispell scroll caddy and that's about as far as I go on brettonia.

The basic principles of Bretonnia are:

1) You must get the charge with your knights.

2) Use the men-at-arms to cover the monstrusly big flanks of the knights.

P.S. If you have another army to play her with, do it. The deadly, almost cheezly good units of skaven might just turn her off to Warhammer. I mean, your trying to teach her the basics, and your using an army that doesn't fight with the basics.

Actually skaven are a good opponent for bretonnians, as they'll have a tough time staying around through a charge as well as trying to kill knights with 2+ armor saves.

A unit of 3 or so Pegasus knights is an awesome unit, plus she'll love the models. :D As far as magic goes, lore of life all the way. Have you looked at the Errantry War list for SoC? If she likes alot of crazy knights errant with str 6 on the charge then that's something to look into. Unit sizes depend on what type of knights you're talking about- they're generally 9 or 12 since they're in ranks of 3.

Along with KOTR mounted Yeomen seem to be pretty useful. Definately pegasus knights cause some discomfert. As for unit sizes, M@A should be in units of 20 and knights should be 8-12. Questing knights and Grail knights can probably hold their own with smaller units of 5 + a character.
That pesky warmachine keeping you down, or is that combat monster destroying your army? NEVER FEAR... ESHIN IS HERE

Most of what was said here is pretty good. All of the Bret sites I've seen on the web have been for the old edition. I really haven't seen too much for 6th.

Brets have never been all that good with magic and I agree damsels are scroll caddies at the best. Now le Fay is another matter, but with 1,500 pts. you're not going to see her.

I really like the Erranty list. I'm not that impressed with the trebuchet and unless you're going peasant heavy or sieging I don't think it is to Bretting.

The main thing with Brets is they have to charge, they have to do major damage when they charge. They also have to protect their flanks, which is going to be the major weakness the Skaven can capitalize on.

Also skirmishing bowmen, although they can only have one unit, can throw a lot of arrows around in a turn. Pegasus Knights as already mentioned gives you alot of mobility and hard hitting unit. Yeoman bows and being skirmishers can be really good. They can be countered with runner units though.

Let us know how your battles turn out,
Andrew

we played this weekend and she didn't want me to dumb down my army just for her. i made her list as anti-skaven as i could for the models we have.

paladin general: virtue that turns wounds into extra attacks
BSB: banner of the lady
2x 9 KotR
6 QK
20 MA
2x 10 bowmen

she correctly concluded the bowmen were useless against me and figured out the vulnerable flank thing (my plague monks won a combat causing no wounds but getting a flank).

i was quite proud of her first real game. other than one deployment error (her QK were rather badly out of position), she did great.

i appreciate the comments so far. she's registered here now so i'll have her look this over.

My other army (Skaven being my first love) is Brets.

Damsels blow, but are good for their MR1 and hold the requisite scrolls. 2 in an army is generally the right call for me, one with 2 dispel scrolls and the other with 1 scroll and the chalice. 4-5 Dispel Dice per turn, 2 units with MR1, and 4 spells isn't bad. I also generally pick one with each of the Lores. The auto-rally of the Beasts is good "just in case", while life is good depending on the terrain on the board. Often, however, the range of the Life spells when the terrain is not on the board is too short to be effective - if you're within 6" of a unit and you aren't in CC with them, then you've done something horribly wrong :) My how I wish Damsels had access to the Lore of Heavens... sigh.

I like to run 2 8-man units of KotR and a 5-man unit of Questing Knights. The BSB goes with the Questing Knights I think.... its been awhile. The Lord (or other Paladin in games under 2000 pts) goes with one of the KotR units. A Damsel goes in the other KotR.

I have yet to face Skaven with my Brets... but my usual outfit for the Lord is the Lance of Artrios coupled with the Virtue of Audacity or Virtue of Confidence, and the Gauntlet of the Duel. I charge you, reroll misses and failed wounds, and get killing blow.. meanwhile, you cannot refuse my challenge.

One nice thing about the Bret Damsels when facing the Eshin SoC list is that they are very protected against Assassins. No skitterleaping straight into them unless they are in a unit of less than 8 models. That's an added bonus which I don't think any armies can match.

We're skaven! We can refuse any challenge by the fact that we don't have to be in a fighting rank, which means you can't challenge - lead from the back rules! :D

but brets r a good army to play against skaven, 2+ save is nasty
