SEGA and Archie might be having major issues in the coming weeks relating to the Sonic Comic that could put the future of the series in jeopardy. In a statement released today by former Sonic the Hedgehog comic writer Ken Penders, the US Copyright Office has granted full ownership of the stories, characters and series concepts he created for the Sonic comics. Essently, this means that he has the right to demand royalites and stop Archie and SEGA from using his work without payment and/or recognition. This also means that the publication of the older issues he has copyrights to may not be publishable or sold in any way without permission, as well as new issues based on the content he has copyright to and scans of the copyrighted content via the internet because of DMCA. This copyright move if unresolved could lead to the end of the Sonic comic series, or at least major changes to it.The reason why he claimed copyright has to do with the use of some of his concepts for the series in the Sonic Chronicles and he did not give permission nor did he get payment for that use in the game. Many parts of the series today were based on his work, so this is raising huge questions about the future of the series. Ken said in his statement: "Every story since issue #160 that features my characters and concepts is essentially unauthorized, as I did not grant Archie Comics the right to use my creations for their benefit without compensation to me." Due to TTR's copyright rules, we are obligated to respect these copyrights. The TTR Administration is officially disallowing the linking to and posting of comic scans containing the content published by Ken Penders until further notice.
