Official TTR Review: Sonic 1 for the iPhone

Christmastime is here!
This game is one of the many rereleases of Sonic the Hedgehog for the SEGA Genesis. While the game itself is great and the later games in the classic era of Sonic games are better, this review focuses on how well the game plays on the iPhone. I played this game on an original model iPhone and found the game to be more diffcult to play on the iPhone than it is on a game console. The game itself only needs a D Pad and a button to jump. SEGA did a very good job at putting those on the screen at the corners. However, the limitations of the iPhone does present a learning curve. Learning where exactly to touch on the on screen D Pad when doing the quick actions needed in Sonic Games can take a while to figure out. The emulation of the game is good! The graphics are spot on to the original game. The sound is also good but the sounds are not a perfect emulation of the original at times. The default full screen mode is laggy and slow. Playing in the original resolution makes it go faster but the lag is still there. This is the one thing I think SEGA really needs to fix should they decide to update the game or release more Sonic Games on the iPhone. The save state feature for when the phone rings is nice, but it only keeps the state till you resume. Finally, it's impossible to do the level select code due to the way the game menu system is. Overall, I feel that the iPhone version of the game is a great but not perfect representation of the original. If you have not played the Classic Sonic games, give this game a try and also try out some of the other official rereleases of this game out there. I hope SEGA brings Sonic 2, 3 and Sonic & Knuckles to the iPhone as they would be great to play on the go!

TTR's official rating is :tailshappy: :tailshappy: :tailshappy: :tailshappy: out of 5 Tails.

This review has been posted on Apple's App Store Review system.
I purchased this game using my own money using the normal App Store purchasing process. It is TTR policy to disclose how we optain games that are reviewed in order to comply with FTC rules.
