In a group staff decision we've decided to move School Assistance to a single topic, rather than a sub-forum. Overall though the topic works the same. Any problems or dilemnas you have with school work, any subject at all, post it here and other members will do they can to help you out. If you post for help and no longer need it (either because the project has passed or you have all the help you need, or any othr reason), do let me/us know as well so we can focus on helping those that still need it (I'll also consider help topics inactive if left silent for a long enough period of time).

Lastly, always check this first topic to see who is still currently in need of help and what they need help on.

Old but still considered active School Discussion topics can be found here: http://s6.invisionfree.com/The_Tails_Realm...?showtopic=1529
Discussion of these topics may continue here.

Hey uh, can anyone tell me if this is any good? It's my redraft of my Mercutio essay for English class

*****************************************************
Quote:

Mercuito is one of William Shakespeare’s most famous characters, and many believe even 400-500 years after it was written, that if he hadn’t died, the play should have been renamed “Mercuito”. And for good reason, his use of sexual innuendo, making him a very bawdy character (Which because of the outdated language they use, you don’t notice) and he is quite witty in his speech, and as well his sexual innuendos, he is also the one who gave the now famous “Queen Mab” speech.

However, it is believed like many of Steven Speilberg’s movies these days, Shakespeare’s idea for Romeo & Juliet was not entirely his own, he is said to have gained the inspiration from a 1530 poem titled “Romeus & Juliet” by Pirerre Boaistuau.  Even that poem was based off an original story by Matteo Bandello (1554) and even that was inspired by by Luigi e Porto’s Gulietta e Romeo Circa (1530)

Mercuito’s character was one of the most unique in the play, which is why he’s so well known after all these years. Even though he only appeared in about 4 scenes, he still is considered to the best character of the whole thing. (Which I personally agree with)

There are many reasons for this fame though, like as mentioned before, his use of sexual innuendo, characters like this are very common nowadays, but back then it was almost revolutionary, and it was because of this that people never forgot about him. Here is an example of one of his many innuendos from the play.

Line 30, act 1, scene 4

“If love be rough with you, be rough with love.

Prick love for pricking, and beat love down”

He is referring to having sexual intercourse, in this scene Romeo is acting all lovesick & heartbroken, and he says something which brings on the double meaning sentence.

Act 1 Scene 4, line 25

“Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like a thorn.”

Also, what Romeo means by what he says here is that roses are beautiful like love, but the thorns are sharp, like the downsides of being in love, which are what Mercuito can only see.

Another reason is his ability and will to entertain, here is a well known example, and he insults the nurse quite badly in this scene.

Lines 86 to 92, act 2 scene 4

Romeo: Here’s goodly gear! A sail, a sail!

Mercutio: Two, two, a shirt and a smock.

Nurse: Peter

Peter: Anon

Nurse: My fan Peter.

Mercutio: Good Peter, to hide her face, for her fan’s the fairer face.

By this he is saying, as society these days would say it “She’s a minger; hide her face with that fan!”

Which I’m sure you’ll agree, is pretty insulting, to say the least!

Another reason for his fame is his loyalty & love for Romeo, one of his first line’s in Act 1 scene 4 (His first appearance) is him attempting to cheer Romeo up and get him to go to the dance.

Act 1, scene 4, line 14

Mercutio: Nay Gentle Romeo, we must have you dance.

In act 2 Scene 1, he also tries to stop Romeo climbing over the wall to see Juliet (Which be believes is Rosaline) in an attempt to stop him from becoming even more love sick, as the Romeo Mercuito used to know isn’t the one he is now, so he doesn’t want to lose his friend even more than he already has.

One example that would be impossible not to think of was in Act 3 Scene 1, where Mercutio dies at Tybalt’s hand by jumping in the way of the blow from the sword, which surely would have killed Romeo. So he lost his life for him, he even entertained (Or tried to anyway) after he was stabbed.

Act Three, Scene One, lines 89

Mercutio: Ay, ay, a scratch, a scratch: marry ‘tis enough. Where is my page? Go villain, fetch a surgeon.

********************************************************
Line 91

Mercutio: No ‘tis not so deep as a well, nor so wide as a church door, but ‘tis enough, ‘twill serve. Ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man. I am peppered, I warrant, for this word. A Plague on both your houses! ‘Zounds, a dog, a rat, a mouse, a cat, to scratch a man to death! A Braggart, a rouge, a villain, that fights by the book of arithmetic! Why the devil you cam between us? I was hurt under your arm

*********************************************************
Line 93

Help me into some house Benvolio, or I shall faint. A plague on both your houses! They have made worms meat of me, I have, and soundly too, your houses!

Mercutio then dies, the wound is mortal, unlike what he was making it seem.

Here I have shown how he is significant to the play with his frequent sexual innuendo, his ability & will to entertain, his loyalty and love for Romeo, and his langaunge

EDIT: This isn't all of it, still adding to it

I need 20 people to answer these questions for a project.

How does smoking affect the environment?
Why is second hand smoking bad?
What are your feelings toward smoking?
What causes people to smoke and why?
Do you think smoking is apart of pollution?
How many people die a year from the cause of smoking?
Are you a smoker?
Do you feel that the "Quit Smoking" products work?
What do you feel is the best way to quit smoking?
How many times do you think a person smokes a day?

Isn't this in the wrong forum?

How does smoking affect the environment?
it puts bad gases into the air
Why is second hand smoking bad?
Because it's still bad for your health
What are your feelings toward smoking?
I hate it
What causes people to smoke and why?
I'd say mostly people do it to be in style, though these days it's hardly an excuse because there are ads against it all over.
Do you think smoking is apart of pollution?
It's only a very small part of atmospheric pollution in my opinion
How many people die a year from the cause of smoking?
I don't know the numbers, but I do know it causes death pretty often.
Are you a smoker?
Definitely not
Do you feel that the "Quit Smoking" products work?
I don't think so, I knew two people who stopped, luckily, and it's all in the willpower. There's no easy way to stop.
What do you feel is the best way to quit smoking?
Like in the other question I say it's just in forcing yourself to stop, no medicines or other things work in my opinion.
How many times do you think a person smokes a day?
The people I knew smoked around 10 a day I estimate, I don't remember well now.

How does smoking affect the environment?
Too negligible to be taken in count.

Why is second hand smoking bad?
For a complex chimio-biologic reason I don't know.

What are your feelings toward smoking?
Against for me, equal for others.

What causes people to smoke and why?
Mainly social reasons as a movement of identity, an escape of life worries, fashion...

Do you think smoking is apart of pollution?
No, or in the same way as sound and far more negligible than sound.

How many people die a year from the cause of smoking?
From only smoking, not even one. From many factors including smoking, maybe a little ten thousands. From many factors without including smoking, it would scare me a lot.

Are you a smoker?
No.

Do you feel that the "Quit Smoking" products work?
I would have to personaly test to answer. Mainly a psychological effect however, in my opinion, because of my next answer.

What do you feel is the best way to quit smoking?
Trust his will, have will and a really good reason to quit.

How many times do you think a person smokes a day?
Depending on the person, his resources, his context and life, his anatomy, mentality, his occupations and other factors I can't take in count : about six I suppose.

By the way, are there official answers, I mean about questions 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 10 ? I would like to know them and their source.

I know there are but it's a survey project. It takes a lot more then just searching it in google. Thanks for the help though.
